4 About xpression Database The xpression database is the center of the xpression system and must be installed first. It is the centralized location for all your content, images, and xpression data. The xpression database is a relational database that stores all the data needed for assembling, formatting and publishing personalized documents. The xpression database is a fully indexed database that holds all the content, images, document templates, rules, profiles, and internal data that xpression uses to create, manage, and publish your documents. The xpression database must support Universal Transport Format 8 (UTF-8). In an unclustered environment, there is one xpression database in each xpression installation. For a clustered environment, one xpression database is used by the content servers participating in the cluster. The xpression database is hosted in a relational database and holds different types of information: xpression data objects, rules, text objects (documents), and binary objects (images). Audience This white paper is intended for a technical audience, primarily including current and potential users of xpression who seeks an in-depth understanding of xpression content repository (CR). Note: xpression content repository (CR) has the same meaning of xpression database. Select a database for Content Repository (CR) It is important to choose your database wisely before installation. This section lists the supported databases and platforms. Also, it introduces how to perform database migration properly. Note: EMC Document Sciences strongly recommends NOT sharing the database server of xpression with other enterprise applications. List of Supported Databases and Platforms This section describes the supported databases and platforms. The information below applies to xpression 4.5sp1. 4

5 Note: The CPU and RAM should be sufficient on the database server. Please refer to xpression 4.5sp1 System Overview for more information about these supported platforms and hardware requirements. Supported Databases Please ensure the supported DB version will be installed and the correct JDBC drivers are installed properly on each xpression servers. Supported Platforms The table below describes the supported platforms. Please ensure the supported platforms installed on the xpression server. 8 Migrating to another Database for CR The section describes how to migrate your xpression data from your existing database to another database. Large data sets will require a third party database migration tool. Note: If you are simply moving your database from one server to another, you can just change the JDBC URL. Limitations of database migration When using the xpression Utilities in xadmin to migration a document from a non-oracle database to an Oracle database, ensure you perform the following steps. In the Oracle database, adjust the max length of fields value to ensure that the database can store multi-byte characters. Multi-byte (non-ascii) characters in Oracle are handled as three-byte characters. Therefore, when migrating from other databases, it is necessary to adjust max length and column length for fields containing multi-byte characters accordingly. Database migration There are two ways you can perform the migration based on the target database type, both are described in this section. 9 1. Migrate to a new type of database Please follow up the following steps for migration when the target database is a different type from the current database. Step 1: Back up your data a. Shut down xpression application server before you backup your database. b. Backup the data in the CR using the proper method per the database you used. You will need it later to import your xpression data into your new database. c. Make a copy of the xpression Home and other important directories. This is a precautionary measure to ensure you can recover your data if it is mistakenly overwritten. d. If you are using an external database as a data source, make a separate backup using the utilities that were installed with that database. This also is a precautionary measure. Step 2: Set up the new database Choose the database setup instructions for your new database, and follow those instructions to do the following: Install the database server. Perform any required configuration of the database server, as instructed. Please refer to xpression Installation Guide 4.5sp1 for database configurations information in detail. Note: The xpression database must support Universal Transport Format 8 (UTF-8). Add the xpression database and user. Make a note of the username and password that you define in this step. You will need them later, when running the xpression Setup Wizard. Step 3: Download and install the database driver if necessary You will need to install the driver yourself if it is not bundled. Follow the database setup instructions for your new database, to download and install the database driver if necessary. Please refer to the detail information in the xpression Installation Guide 4.5sp1. 9

10 Step 4: Run xpression server setup wizard and restore your data to your new database When running the xpression server setup wizard: Enter your license key, as usual. In the database setting step, supply the path and filename to your new database driver. When prompted for the database user and password, supply the credentials you defined earlier when adding the xpression database to your database server. Note: The database user should be authenticated as DB Owner. On the database console of xpression, choose Restore from Backup. This is where you will import the data to the new database. Step 5: Clear T_CRUUID per the purpose of the new database (Optional) EMC recommends users ensuring whether the new xpression database will involve the original migration path before starting migration. When the new database involves the original migration path, you cannot clear the T_CRUUID table after restoring the xpression database; otherwise, when processing the document migration, xpression will pop-up the override warning UI to the users. If you want to process the migration properly, you must accept the override options. When the new database does NOT involve the original migration path, e.g., which is used as a backup database, you must clear the T_CRUUID table in the xpression database before using that environment. 2. Migrate to a new database (Same Type Databases) Please follow up the following steps for migration when the target database is same type as the original database. Step 1: Back up your data a. Shut down xpression application server before you backup your database. 10

11 b. Backup the data in the CR using the proper method per the database you used. You will need it later to import your xpression data into your new database. c. Make a copy of the xpression Home and other important directories. This is a precautionary measure, to ensure you can recover your data if it is mistakenly overwritten. d. Step 4: Clear T_CRUUID per the purpose of the new database (Optional) EMC recommends users ensuring whether the new xpression database will involve the original migration path before starting migration. When the new database involves the original migration path, you cannot clear the T_CRUUID table after restoring the xpression database; otherwise, when processing the document migration, xpression will pop-up the override warning UI to the users. Upgrade xpression Content Repository (CR) This section provides general instructions for upgrading to the most recent xpression Content Repository. The upgrade steps listed in this chapter are very generic. If you altered any of the xpression directories or files or want to keep some of your existing settings, you may need a slightly different set of steps. Please check with your EMC Document Sciences representative. Please refer to the xpression Upgrade Guide 4.5sp1 for the instructions in detail. Troubleshooting xpression Content Repository Connections A common administration issue when configuring xpression content repository (CR) is identifying database connectivity problems. This page can help you to analyze database connectivity issues and find a solution. According to the previous experiences, the database connectivity problems may be caused by: Network connectivity issues Database user authentication issues Database space issues EMC recommends checking the associated xpression log and application server log to find out the issues above. After confirming the associated issues, please take corresponding actions below to try to resolve them: Ensure the associated port number has been opened properly through the firewall Ensure the database user has been authenticated as DB Owner. Extend the database space as needed Note: After updating the associated configurations, please ensure you restart the application server so as to enable the new configurations. 12
