2 Welcome If you look around at any university campus in Australia you d soon see that not everyone who comes to uni comes directly from school. The reality is that only a little more than half of the students at the University of South Australia are traditional school leavers. The rest come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, but they have one thing in common: the belief that further education will increase their opportunities in life. We re very glad that you might be one of them. We opened UniSA College in 2011 for people who thought further education might be out of their reach. It isn t, and through UniSA College we have been very successful in setting new university students off on intellectual adventures that change their lives. 3 About UniSA College UniSA College provides a range of educational opportunities to inspire and assist further study and educational attainment through our academic and UniSA Connect programs. UniSA College academic programs prepare you for university by building your academic skills and prerequisite knowledge. Our programs are designed primarily for people who do not have the qualifications required to get directly into a bachelor degree, providing options for those looking for an alternative pathway to university. Studying with us will allow you to experience life as a UniSA student, which means being taught by UniSA staff and having access to the full range of support services the university provides. In 2016, we offered the Indigenous Participation Pathway (IPP) program to Indigenous students in the Ceduna, Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln regions. We also have a suite of UniSA Connect workshops to inspire further study. These programs are specifically designed to engage with secondary school students and teachers, and the community. Many of the programs are taught at our purpose-built Maths and Science Centre at the University s Mawson Lakes campus. UniSA College also supports the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) and South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academies (SAASTA) at our Mawson Lakes and Whyalla campuses. 4 Which pathway is best for you? The academic programs taught by UniSA College include the one-year Foundation Studies and two-year diploma programs in Arts, Business, Health, and Science and Technology. These programs can be used as a pathway into a UniSA degree and are suited to those who may not have the required qualifications for direct entry into a bachelor program. They are a supportive way for students to settle into the university environment and may be suitable as back up options if you do not get an offer into one of your preferred degree programs. If you are interested in studying one of the linked degrees listed here, a diploma program might be the best pathway for you. Students who successfully complete a UniSA diploma are guaranteed entry and transition into the second year of their linked bachelor degree, receiving credit for the first year. If you are interested in a UniSA degree that is not linked to a UniSA diploma, you may be eligible to apply for the Foundation Studies program, which can be used as a competitive pathway to any UniSA degree. As a UniSA College student, you will complete courses that will develop your critical writing, study, communication, numeracy and research skills. You will also choose additional courses related to your preferred field of study, such as business; education, arts and social sciences; information technology, engineering and the environment; and health sciences. These courses can include prerequisite courses for UniSA bachelor degrees. If you choose to undertake our Foundation Studies program, you will complete your studies in at least one year. If you choose to study a UniSA diploma, you will complete the program over a minimum of two years. The first 8 courses will teach you fundamental academic skills and introduce you to various disciplines, just like the Foundation Studies program. In the second year of your diploma, you will start studying first-year courses from your linked bachelor degree (see pages 2 and 3). As a UniSA College student, you will be supported when choosing your courses so that you are prepared for further study in your chosen field. For example, advice is provided on any prerequisite courses required for your preferred UniSA degree program. You will also be taught on campus by UniSA staff and will have access to our full range of support services. This means you will also learn what it s like to be a university student before you start studying a bachelor degree. Flexible study options Going to uni might be easier than you think. Fit your study around your life by making the most of our flexible study options. UniSA offers maximum flexibility, making it easy to balance work, life and family. You will have the choice of full-time or part-time study. Full-time study is equivalent to a full-time job, so you will need approximately 40 hours per week to successfully complete your study. Some courses are also available externally via the Internet, allowing you to study outside of traditional work/study hours and around your other commitments. In general, your study schedule will be divided into contact hours (the time you spend in lectures and tutorials) and independent study, including research and assignments. Contact hours depend on the program you choose. Independent study hours will vary according to the individual, but the more you put in, the more you will get back. Where will you study? Diploma and Foundation Studies programs are offered at City West campus, but you may find yourself studying some courses at City East, Magill or Mawson Lakes. 7 His blueprint for success I thought my dream of becoming an architect was lost when I realised my year 12 results weren t competitive enough for my chosen degree. I considered attempting year 13, but when I heard about Foundation Studies, my choice was made. UniSA College taught me all I needed to know about studying at university and equipped me with valuable skills that better prepared me for my next degree. I felt like the Foundation Studies program put me steps ahead of my fellow students who had come straight from high school. I wouldn t be where I am today without UniSA College. This year I will start the Master of Architecture so that I can eventually work as a registered architect. I hope to improve people s lives by designing office buildings that will not only look beautiful but will improve staff productivity. 8 Our programs Diplomas UniSA College offers 4 diploma programs in Arts, Business, Health, and Science and Technology. Diplomas are two-year (or part-time equivalent) programs designed to provide a pathway into a UniSA degree for those who may not meet the requirements for direct entry. In your first year, you will learn the skills necessary to study successfully at a tertiary level, such as how the University works, how to write academic assignments, how to reference and how to manage your time. In your second year, you will start studying first-year courses from your linked bachelor degree. You will sit in the same lectures and tutorials as other first-year degree students, but you will be able to come back to the UniSA College for additional support. Studying a diploma will allow you to build networks as you study alongside other undergraduate students in your chosen field. These programs are offered full-time or parttime, and may be studied partially-externally depending on your program structure and course selection. Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a university diploma qualification. Following this, you will continue seamlessly into the second year of your linked degree program at UniSA (see pages 2 and 3). When you apply for UniSA degrees, a diploma program may be listed on your South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) application as a back up to your preferred degrees. Diploma in Arts SATAC code The Diploma in Arts provides a pathway into architectural studies, arts, design, Indigenous cultures and Australian society, international relations, journalism and professional writing, languages, linguistics, interior architecture, media arts, psychological science, social science (human services), social work, sociology, urban and regional planning, visual arts and creative communication programs. Diploma in Business SATAC code The Diploma in Business provides a pathway into accounting, business, economics, finance, health services management, human resource management, information strategy and management, innovation and entrepreneurship, international business, legal studies, logistics and supply chain management, management, marketing, property, sport and recreation, and tourism and event management programs. Diploma in Health SATAC code The Diploma in Health provides a pathway into health science, human movement, laboratory medicine, medical science, nursing, nutrition and food sciences, and pharmaceutical science programs. Diploma in Science and Technology SATAC code The Diploma in Science and Technology provides a pathway into built environment, construction management and economics, engineering, environmental science, geospatial science, information technology, science and software engineering programs. Who is it for? Diploma programs are designed primarily for people who do not have the qualifications required to get directly into a degree at UniSA. Location Diploma programs are offered at City West campus with some courses at City East, Magill and Mawson Lakes campuses. Entry requirements Applicants may be eligible to compete for entry if they have one of the following: > > Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with an ATAR of at least 50 (with bonus points). > > Completed an interstate or overseas qualification considered by the University as equivalent to SACE. > > Completed the International Baccalaureate diploma with a minimum score of 24 points. > > Completed a recognised Certificate III or Certificate IV at TAFE or a registered training organisation. > > Qualified for Special Entry with a competitive STAT score normally around 139 or higher. > > Completed a University Foundation Studies program assessed on their grade point average (GPA). Applicants must: > > be an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent visa; and > > meet the relevant citizenship and residency requirements for a Commonwealth Supported Place Applicants who have completed a TAFE/VET award at Diploma level or above, or who have studied at higher education level for more than two years will not be considered for admission to these programs. UniSA Preferred UniSA Preferred is a scheme that offers guaranteed entry into many UniSA programs (including UniSA College diplomas) for domestic year 12, TAFE and other registered training organisation (RTO) students. If your ATAR (including any bonus points) meets the UniSA Preferred score for that program (50 for UniSA College diplomas), you have met any prerequisites, and you have listed the program as your first preference, you are in. 9 Foundation Studies UniSA Foundation Studies is a free*, one-year program with no minimum entry qualifications required. You will learn the skills required to study successfully at a tertiary level, such as how the University works, how to write academic assignments, how to reference and how to manage your time. You will also gain important disciplinespecific skills and base knowledge with support from UniSA College staff. As a Foundation Studies student, you will be taught on campus by UniSA staff and will have access to our full range of support services, helping to create a smooth transition into a UniSA degree. The program is offered full-time or part-time, and may be studied externally depending on your course selection. Upon successful completion, you can use your grade point average (GPA) to apply for any UniSA degree (a competitive GPA is required). *Foundation Studies students will be required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee as determined by the Australian Government. Indigenous Participation Pathway (IPP) From 2016 onwards the IPP program is offered to Indigenous students in the Ceduna, Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln regions. Modelled on our Foundation Studies program, the IPP leads to entry into a university degree or a UniSA College Diploma program. For more information, visit unisa.edu.au/ipp Who is it for? The program is designed for people who do not have any qualifications and are returning to study, or for those who require more support before commencing a degree program. Location Foundation Studies is offered at City West, or regionally at our Mount Gambier and Whyalla campuses. Some elective courses are taught at City East or Mawson Lakes. Entry requirements No formal minimum entry requirements apply. Applicants must be 18 years of age or over before February 1st of the year of intended enrolment for the Study Period 2 (start of the year) intake or 18 years of age or over before the 1st July of the year of intended enrolment for the Study Period 5 (midyear) intake. Applicants must: > > be an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent visa; and > > meet the relevant citizenship and residency requirements for a Commonwealth Supported Place Applicants who have previously studied at higher education level or completed a TAFE/VET award at Certificate IV or higher will not be considered for admission to this program. 10 Getting started the basics Application Information Before you apply Before you apply, make sure you meet the entry requirements for your preferred program/s (see pages 6 and 7 for basic entry requirements). How to apply Applications to most programs at UniSA, including UniSA College programs, are administered through SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre). Applications open from early August each year for study in the following year. After applications open, you must submit an undergraduate application online via the SATAC website satac.edu.au During the application process you will need to choose your program preferences. To do this you can search for the programs using the program s SATAC code found in this brochure. Ensure you read through the program information carefully before adding a preference. You can choose up to 6 preferences on your application. If you are applying for a bachelor program, you may like to consider UniSA College programs as lower preferences, as explained on pages 2 and 3. You have up until the Change of Preference deadline to finalise your preferences. Before this date you will be able to add and remove preferences, as well as change the order of your preferences. After you have applied Be aware of the important key dates regarding your application (these are listed on the SATAC website satac.edu.au). We recommend you apply before the early closing date in September. You may still submit an application up until the equal consideration closing date, however a late fee may apply. If you are applying after the deadline, please contact Future Student Enquiries for advice, contact Future Student Enquiries on (08) or unisa.edu.au/enquiry Once you have submitted your application, remember to pay your SATAC application fee, otherwise you will not be eligible to receive an offer. The main round of offers is in mid-january each year. Offers are ed to successful applicants and normally require a response to accept or decline the offer. 11 Fees How much will it cost? How much your study is going to cost depends on which program you study. The Foundation Studies program is fee-free, although Student Services and Amenities Fees may apply. The diploma programs have Commonwealth Supported fees that are determined by the Australian Government and are calculated based on the courses undertaken as part of the program. Each course at UniSA is categorised into student contribution amounts known as bands. Students are charged per semester based on the courses they are enrolled in for that semester. As per the Australian Government guidelines, the student contribution amounts for 2016 are: Band Area of study per 1 EFTSL per Humanities, behavioural science, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts, clinical psychology, nursing and education Computing, built environment, health, engineering, surveying, agriculture, mathematics, statistics, science Law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, accounting, administration, economics, commerce $6,256 $782 $8,917 $1,114 $10,440 $1,305 Note: These amounts are for 1 equivalent full-time student load (EFTSL) in The student contribution amounts for 2017 will be advised by the Federal Government in October 2016, and these will be available to view via unisa.edu.au/fees at that time. Paying/deferring your fees on a HECS-HELP loan Australian citizens and holders of permanent humanitarian visas can defer payment of their diploma fees under the HECS-HELP loan scheme until they are earning a specified salary (see Paying back your HECS-HELP loan below). If students choose to defer payment for the full amount of their student contribution, they will not be required to pay any course fees upfront. If you are applying as an Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen (residing in Australia for the duration of your program), you are eligible for Commonwealth Supported fees but not a HECS-HELP loan. This means you are required to pay your course fees as upfront payments each semester. Applications for HECS-HELP are made as part of the enrolment process once a student is accepted into the program. Scholarships A range of scholarships are available to assist students, including rural and/or socio-economically disadvantaged students and Indigenous Australians. For more information, contact (08) or visit unisa.edu.au/scholarship Your wellbeing and support It s important to us that you become a successful student, so we have set up a range of services for you to access. The list is extensive: personal, medical, academic and social support services, including nearby childcare, common rooms and prayer rooms, security offices and our student association USASA. Campus Central will be your first point of call for all student enquiries including help with your enrolment, ID cards, fees and more, and will point you in the right direction for more detailed information. For more information on student services and support, visit unisa.edu.au/studentservices Paying back your HECS-HELP loan Repayments must be made when the student reaches a defined minimum income threshold. For the income year the minimum threshold is at approximately $54,126 per annum. Repayment is 4% of the student s taxable income for the minimum threshold and up to 8% of the student s taxable income for salaries $100,520 and above. Voluntary repayments can also be made. Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) Both Foundation Studies and diploma students studying on-campus are required to pay Student Services and Amenities Fees as determined by the Australian Government. In 2016 these fees were capped at $286 per year. SSAF fees may also be deferred on a SA-HELP loan. 13 A successful work/study/life balance At the age of 37 I decided that I wanted to fulfil one of my life ambitions: to go to university. Having only completed year 10 at high school and having been under the impression that my only options were to either return to high school or attempt the STAT test, I was delighted when I discovered UniSA College pathways. I started Foundation Studies when my youngest child was just over a year old. As I hadn t studied since 1991 and had only basic computer skills, I enrolled part-time to balance my study with being a parent and working part-time. I took advantage of all the extra support that was offered by the College staff and completed the program with an overall GPA of 7. 14 UniSA Connect 8200 STUDENTS 600 TEACHERS PARTICIPATED IN UniSA CONNECT PROGRAM IN 2015 UniSA Connect engages with secondary schools and the community to inspire further study and educational attainment. Secondary school programs UniSA College utilises academic expertise to identify current and emerging Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ideas to develop interactive experiential workshops. Scenario based problem solving is used as a key approach in the programs, with authentic learning links for secondary school students. STEM workshops are delivered at UniSA s Mawson Lakes campus utilising specialised equipment and facilities. UniSA Connect programs are also delivered at Whyalla and Mount Gambier campuses. The UniSA Connect secondary school programs also connect with careers. The Career Awareness Program is designed to give secondary students (years 10-12) the opportunity to explore career options and pathways. Community programs UniSA College partners with many community centres and organisations to run programs for members of the public. Collaboration with community centre staff allows UniSA College to develop working relationships to encourage their clients to re-engage with education and to promote UniSA College Foundation Studies and diplomas.
