3 Welcome If you look around at any university campus in Australia you d soon see that not everyone who comes to uni comes directly from school. In fact, only a little more than half of the students at the University of South Australia are school leavers. The rest come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, but they have one thing in common: the belief that further education will improve their opportunities in life. As a university with a strong commitment to equity and access, we believe that people should have opportunities for further education and we have created pathways to university study so that they can get an education when they are ready and able to do so. Our students have access to ongoing support throughout their study, helping to maximise their potential and gain the most from their university experience. From preparatory workshops, to flexible study options and financial assistance through scholarships and grants, our top priority is seeing our students succeed. UniSA has its own success story: we are ranked among the world s top 50 universities under 50 years of age by both the QS and THE (Times Higher Education) global rankings. We are the youngest Australian university on this THE list. We also proudly celebrate our cultural diversity. We have around 33,500 students, more than 7,000 of whom are international students. We are South Australia s biggest university and we offer more than 400 degree programs in business, education, arts, social sciences, health sciences, information technology, engineering and the environment. We pride ourselves on educating modern professionals through programs that are specifically designed to reflect industry requirements. Indeed, our graduate employment rates are the best in South Australia and exceed the state and national averages. I hope that you become one of our many success stories and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon. Professor David G. Lloyd Vice Chancellor and President 1

10 A week at university In general, your study schedule will be divided into contact hours (the time you spend in lectures, tutorials and practicums) and independent study, including research and assignments. The following information provides a snapshot of what your schedule could possibly look like. Flexible modes of study include: > > External study: Some programs are offered wholly or partially externally, including online delivery. > > Part-time study: You can study most programs part-time which means taking on less than 75 per cent of a normal annual full-time load. > > Mixed-mode attendance: It is sometimes possible for students to undertake a combination of internal and external classes. > > Intensive study: Some courses are available over summer or winter school. Explore the modes of study available in our program table on pages or on our website. unisa.edu.au/study Full-time study load A full-time load includes a combination of 4.5 or 9 unit courses to make up 18 units per semester. Most courses include a lecture, plus a tutorial or workshop. There is usually one lecture time for all students, but then you will generally break into smaller groups for a tutorial or workshop with a number of times that you can select from to fit your schedule. The following timetable is based on a first-year student of a Bachelor of Education (Primary and Middle). Note: This schedule is indicative and should be used as a general guide only. Schedules can vary greatly from one student to the next. Note that even with a full-time load, in some cases you may not have to attend university every day. If you choose less than a full-time load, your schedule may only require attendance two or three days. 11 Parent-study balance turning dreams into reality Amanda Radomi Bachelor of Arts (Australian Society and Indigenous Cultures) Amanda Radomi has big plans for her Australian Society and Indigenous Cultures degree; using it to realise her dream and improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in Australia. As a parent Amanda has worked to balance her studies with family commitments, but sees the benefits of working hard to improve conditions in Indigenous communities. This area of study is so important to me because statistics relating to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in Australia are appalling and this directly affects me and my family, she says. 9Your life as a student

16 Discover your pathway To find the right pathway into your preferred university degree, we start by looking at where you are coming from as every individual situation is different. Explore the descriptions below and follow the headings on the pathways chart opposite. Step 1: Where does your journey begin? Returning to study? Whether you have done some study recently or it was quite a long time ago, there are a number of pathways available to help you gain a place in a UniSA degree. If you did complete high school, no matter how long ago that was, you may still be eligible to use your Year 12 results, providing you have not completed more than two years of equivalent full-time tertiary study. If you did not complete high school or if your Year 12 results do not meet the entry requirements of your preferred degree, you may be able to take an alternative pathway such as the Foundation Studies or a diploma program through UniSA College or an alternative provider. Or you could sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) a two-hour test made up of 70 multiple choice questions. See our pathway chart for more about the STAT, and keep in mind this is conducted in May-July and August- February each year through SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre), with UniSA offering Prepare for STAT workshops throughout the year. Some programs which accept STAT for entry may also consider your application on the basis of employment experience or a personal competencies statement. See our website for more details. Changing your uni degree? Have you spent time at university before? Whether you have studied at UniSA, through Open Universities Australia (OUA) or at another university, you may apply to transfer based on your grade point average (GPA). Or, it s still possible to use your Year 12 results if you have completed no more than two years of equivalent full-time tertiary study. You will need to check if your results are competitive with the current Year 12 ATAR scores. See Step 2: > > Higher Education Study > > High School Coming to uni from TAFE or another RTO? Your previous study could be enough to get you into a university degree. Through our UniSA Preferred scheme, many programs offer you a guaranteed place if you have a TAFE/RTO diploma or higher, you meet any prerequisites and you list the program as your first preference. See pages for more details about the credit you could receive for your previous study. See Step 2: > > TAFE/RTO unisa.edu.au/adult See Step 2: > > High School > > UniSA College > > UniSA Associate Degree > > SAIBT > > STAT Not sure that any of these fit you? We recognise that there are many pathways to a university degree and it can be difficult to determine your most suitable option. Contact us to book a one-on-one appointment where we can review your individual situation and options. Call , study@unisa.edu.au, visit unisa.edu.au/pathways or visit Campus Central on a UniSA campus near you. 14

17 Step 2: Explore the pathways you could take Use your ATAR (Year 12) High School Or take a UniSA pathway UniSA College UniSA Associate Degree Or take an alternative pathway TAFE/RTO South Australian Institute of Business and Technology (saibt) Diploma Special Tertiary Admissions Test (stat) Higher Education Study Individual circumstances may differ and some conditions may apply. Please contact our Future Student Enquiries team to discuss your pathway. unisa.edu.au/pathways Complete Year 12 and apply using your ATAR. Complete a two-year diploma, then enter the second year of a linked UniSA degree. Complete the one-year Foundation Studies program, then apply to enter the first year of a UniSA degree. Complete a two-year program in engineering (via ATN Test), or built environments, then enter the second year of the related degree. Apply using a certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma from TAFE or another RTO. You may also receive credit for your study. Complete a diploma through SAIBT. Then enter the second year of a related degree. A minimum grade point average (GPA) is required. If you are over 18 and haven't completed more than two years of full-time tertiary study in the last two years, you can sit the STAT for entry into UniSA programs. If you have completed at least half a year of full-time equivalent study (at either UniSA or another institution) you can apply using your GPA. Complete four courses at an appropriate level through Open Universities Australia (OUA), then apply to UniSA based on your GPA. 15Your pathway to university

18 UniSA College UniSA College programs build your academic skills and pre-requisite knowledge, preparing you for degree-level study. Diplomas Diplomas offered through the UniSA College are two-year programs designed to provide a pathway into a university degree for those who may not meet the requirements for direct entry. You will learn the skills required for successful tertiary-level study as well as gain discipline-specific skills and knowledge with support from UniSA College staff. Studying a diploma allows you to build networks as you study alongside other undergraduate students in your chosen field. Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a university diploma qualification. You will then continue seamlessly into the second year of your undergraduate degree at UniSA. Diploma programs: > > Diploma in Allied Health > > Diploma in Arts > > Diploma in Business > > Diploma in Science and Technology Packaged programs: > > Diploma in Arts/Bachelor of Arts > > Diploma in Business/Bachelor of Business > > Diploma in Science and Technology/Bachelor of Information Technology > > Diploma in Science and Technology/Bachelor of Health Science Foundation Studies UniSA Foundation Studies is a free*, one-year program with no minimum entry qualifications required. Students learn the skills required for successful university-level study. On completion of the Foundation Studies program, you can use your grade point average (GPA) to apply for entry into a university degree. This process is competitive. Foundation Studies students are taught on campus by UniSA staff, and have access to our full range of support services, leading to a smooth transition into a UniSA degree. * Foundation Studies students are not charged course fees but may be required to pay student amenities fees as determined by the Australian Government. How to apply Applications for the diploma programs and Foundation Studies are made through SATAC as one of your six preferences. unisa.edu.au/college 16

It has taught me to question things and to stand up for what I believe in. I have learnt to be critical and that it is ok to be critical. It also gave me an understanding of what study options were available so that I can pursue my passion. 17Your pathway to university

20 Credit for your prior learning If you have studied in a relevant area at TAFE SA or another registered training organisation (RTO), you may be able to fast-track your bachelor degree by obtaining credit. With a certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma, you can apply for a UniSA degree, and possibly gain credit for previous TAFE/RTO study that is relevant to your discipline, even if you didn t successfully complete Year 12. Check the headings that relate to your areas of study in our credit table on the following pages and see how many units of credit you could be eligible for. Credit for unrelated qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The credit listed here is correct at time of printing, but is subject to change. For degrees involving mathematics, some additional university bridging mathematics may be required. Checking your credit You may still be eligible for credit if you find that your previous study or award details are not listed. All you have to do is give us a call and someone will be able to answer your queries. Alternatively, you can log onto our online credit assessor for an instant snapshot of how your qualifications count towards your program. Select your year of study, institution and qualification to see how much credit you could receive. A final decision on the amount of credit will be made once you have enrolled in your program and formally applied for credit. After enrolment, you can head to the credit assessor and print out a form with your results. Takes this into Campus Central to formally submit your credit application. unisa.edu.au/credit A word from TAFE SA South Australia s economy is rapidly changing, requiring more employees with a breadth of skills as well as higher level qualifications. Traditionally, students would often choose between vocational education and training (VET) and university studies to further their employment and career aspirations. Increasing cooperation between the VET and university sectors, as well as the growth in complementary study options, means we are now seeing significant numbers of TAFE SA graduates applying to continue their studies at university. Jen Rodger Executive Director, TAFE SA How many units how much time? 108 units of credit 36 units of credit 18 units of credit 1 year 6 months 3 years Note: This diagram is based on a full-time study load. 25 From winemaking to IT at IBM TAFE study fast-tracks uni degree Mark Murray Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development) After a decade as a winemaker, Mark Murray found himself out of work when the wine industry struck turbulent times. He realised a career change was needed if he was going to remain near his family in Adelaide. I was interested in IT and began studying at TAFE, reflects Mark. This was a good starting point for a career change because it was shorter than university. Mark then decided to use his TAFE qualifications to transfer to the University of South Australia to help him secure a more specialised job. He gained credit for some courses completed at TAFE fast-tracking his degree and feels he gained a well-rounded education. During his UniSA study, Mark undertook an internship at IBM and was offered a full-time position upon graduation. He now works in software development and is very glad he chanced a career change. 23Your pathway to university

26 Your next steps Make your choice and apply for entry into university. Aligning your passions and interests with your future career is easy at UniSA with more than 90 undergraduate programs to choose from. Unleash your creativity with a degree in arts, become a leader in the business world or make a difference to the lives of children with a career in education. All of this and more is possible. Use the information in this guide and online to select your preferences and make your choice. Visit: Step 1 Explore 2015 SATAC Guide Undergraduate program tables on pages of this guide unisa.edu.au/study satac.edu.au Paying for your studies Check out how much your studies will cost while exploring your options. Your place as a domestic student at the University of South Australia is Commonwealth-supported. This means that you are charged for a portion of the cost of your studies, and the Australian Government contributes to part of the cost. If eligible, you can defer your contribution through HECS-HELP and repay it later through the taxation system. Your contribution will depend on what you study. See table for a breakdown of student contribution amounts for 2014, as per Australian Government guidelines. Band Area of study per 1 EFTSL* per 4.5 unit course 1 Humanities, behavioural science, social studies, foreign languages, visual and performing arts, clinical psychology, nursing and education 2 Computing, built environment, health, engineering, surveying, agriculture, mathematics, statistics, science 3 Law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, accounting, administration, economics, commerce $6,044 $755 $8,613 $1,076 $10,085 $1,260 *The EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) value is a measure of study load, and this reflects a standard full-time study year. Note: At the time of this printing, the Federal Government has proposed changes to student contributions and finance, and hence this information is subject to potential change. Keep up to date at: unisa.edu.au/fees Scholarships can reduce your costs Each year more than 2500 students at the University of South Australia benefit from scholarships and grants totalling millions of dollars. We have a range of categories including support for high achievers and students in need. unisa.edu.au/scholarships 24
