Gorgon Carbon Dioxide Injection Project Asia Pacific Partnership for Clean Development and Climate Power Generation and Transmission & Cleaner Fossil Energy Joint Task Force Meeting and Seminar April 1, 2008
Gorgon Project
Carbon Dioxide Injection Project The first project in Australia to significantly reduce emissions by the underground injection of carbon dioxide Project emissions expected to be reduced by approximately 40% (~3.7 MTPA CO 2 e) $100+ million spent on investigation and development to date Per tonne costs remain less expensive that alternate abatement options Number of world firsts First geosequestration legislation First project to undergo detailed environmental impact assessment (including public review and comment)
Field Layout Facilities include CO 2 compressors integrated into gas processing facility Carbon dioxide pipeline 8 injection wells drilled from 3 drill pads ~4 pressure management wells Fit for purpose monitoring program Repeat seismic data Observation wells Near surface soil gas monitoring Program for ensuring existing well penetrations in the plume area do not provide leakage pathways Commitment to make data from the ongoing monitoring available to the public
Barrow Island Stratigraphy Target reservoir for CO 2 injection 2300m SHALE / SILTSONE (Seals) CARBONATE SANDSTONE GREENSAND
Containment Mechanisms Solution of CO 2 into formation water Residual gas trapping Fine-grained sandstone 1mm Large scale geometric trapping below formation seals Mineralogical trapping

Reservoir Surveillance Objectives Reservoir surveillance options are being evaluated to assist responsible reservoir management Simulation Reservoir surveillance focused on early identification of uncertainty signposts Mitigation Surveillance Should signposts be identified then mitigation plans can be implemented to ensure the injected carbon dioxide continues to behave as Signpost Integration of reservoir surveillance and reservoir simulation data will assist the demonstration of site integrity
Integrated Monitoring Plan Injection Wells Wellhead pressure and flow rate Continuous down-hole pressure PLT & casing/cement integrity logs Observation Wells Continuous downhole pressure Saturation & casing/cement integrity logs 4D Surface Seismic 3D baseline survey Repeat 2D and 3D surveys Surface Environmental Soil gas flux sampling over the 3D seismic source grid and additional sampling at potential near-surface seepage points
Next Steps Environmental Approval for increase in Project capacity from 10 MTPA to 15 MTPA LNG Requires bringing forward of plans to manage reservoir pressure Risks associated with the carbon dioxide injection project are not anticipated to be significantly different from the 10 MTPA LNG case Barrow Island Act 2003 approval to dispose of carbon dioxide Approval of the State Agreement Development Proposals
