3 MODELS ACTIVITY B Exercise L Page For this discussion, it is useful to enlarge the Leadership Model worksheets to poster size or prepare a set of hand-outs for your students. We discussed four different models of Leadership as a way of engaging students in the idea that there are different types of leadership. Encourage your students to think of examples of each type of leadership. Do these models represent ALL types of leadership? Could you develop more models of leadership? Visionary Leadership Starting with an idea the leader works to realize his or her vision He or she may have to develop support networks or take on training in order to achieve the goal Leadership is a BY PRODUCT of the vision Examples of visionary leaders include people who start social enterprises like Anita Roddick of the Body Shop Situational Leadership A particular situation demands leadership and a person steps forward to take charge Leadership is a RESULT of a situation Examples include the person who leads other people to safety in an emergency Aspirational Leadership A person desires to be a leader and then finds the education experience and position to be a leader Leadership is a GOAL Examples include politicians who enter the government with the goal of becoming leaders Egotistical Leadership A person desires to be seen as a leader does everything to be in a position to influence other people and then does anything to stay in that position The PERCEPTION of leadership is a GOAL Examples include celebrities who court the media in order to promote a charity Keep the Leadership Models posted for the Walk in Winston Churchill s Shoes Exercise ( Exercise #WC2 page 12).

10 E CHURCHILL Exercise WC Page WINSTON CHURCHILL S SPEECHES These excerpts are useful for work in oration exercises. They can be used in partnership with the audio file of Winston Churchill s oration. An audio file of these excerpts, called WCHURCHILL.mp3, is available on the Churchill Museum website. I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." Winston Churchill to Parliament May 13th, 1940 You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realised... Winston Churchill to Parliament May 13th, 1940 We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be... June 4th, We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender... June 4th, 1940 Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. June 18th, 1940 Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour." June 4th, 1940 CHURCHILL

11 E CHURCHILL Exercise WC Page Surely from this period of ten months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never in nothing, great or small, large or petty... Winston Churchill at Harrow School October 29th, Never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. Winston Churchill at Harrow School October 29th, 1941 The gratitude of every home in our Island, in our Empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their devotion. August 20th, 1940 CHURCHILL Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. August 20th, 1940 God bless you all. This is your victory! It is the victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history we have never seen a greater day than this... Winston Churchill to the Crowds May 8th, Everyone, man or woman, has done their best. Everyone has tried. Neither the long years, nor the dangers, nor the fierce attacks of the enemy, have in any way weakened the independent resolve of the British nation. God bless you all. Winston Churchill to the Crowds May 8th, 1945
