Explores the concept of going to university and the value of a higher education qualification. The session aims to break down barriers, raise pupils awareness and aspirations of HE. Leeds graduates talk about their university experience, their career and how their time at university has enhanced their employability. This talk focuses on the considerations that need to be made when selecting A-levels and what students need to know in order to choose the courses which are right for now, right for when they are applying to university and beyond. A session researching UCAS options and the tools/methods available for prospective students to make an informed decision about their university and course options. An elective workshop activity involves students using prospectuses to decide on the best options available for our set of fictional characters. Modern, catered, self-catered, on campus, off campus? 3 Higher education language Interactive introduction to student finance Interview skills for university Introduction to higher education Introduction to research Learning styles and revision skills Making the most of open days and UCAS fairs Personal statements Interactive session introducing pupils to some of the commonly used terms and language employed in higher education. The session works through a variety of definitions of terms including lecture, module and semester. Explains some of the terminology used relating to student finance and uses activities to introduce the concepts of money management and budgeting. A session to prepare prospective students for selection interviews. We focus on why universities interview, what to expect and the dos and don ts on the day. Current undergraduates who have been through the university interview process share their experiences. Presentation aimed to increase pupils awareness and aspirations of higher education. The session explores the wide range of undergraduate courses available, the opportunities and benefits of HE. Introduces pupils to basic research skills including: analysing and interpreting essay questions, searching for relevant sources of information and understanding the nature of primary and secondary sources. Pupils participate in a questionnaire to determine their preferred learning style. Pupils then have an opportunity to reflect on how they can make best use of their natural learning style to study and revise more effectively (i.e. flash cards, rhyme). An overview of what happens at undergraduate open days and UCAS fairs. The session focusses on how student can plan their visits to ensure they get the most out of the experience and the opportunities available. Learn why personal statements are a crucial part of the UCAS application process. Students will consider real examples and receive tips on preparing their own. 4 Planning your future Preparations for higher education: making the most of Year 12 Preparations for higher education: Year 13 Presentation skills Student finance Student life/ Things I can t live without Student panel Consider the different qualifications and pathways that pupils can take into HE and/or their chosen career. Encourages pupils to think about their goals and the steps they need to undertake of pursue their ambitions. Session focusing on the opportunities available in higher education and what pupils can be doing in Year 12 to prepare themselves for applying to university. Concentrates on the transition to university and the steps that Year 13 pupils can take to prepare for undergraduate study and student life. Highlights the opportunities available to first year university students and explores possible challenges and realistic solutions. What are the key factors of a successful presentation? This session covers planning, preparing and structuring presentations as well as tips on content and delivery styles and different presentation tools. An introduction to student finance including fees, loans, bursaries and scholarships. The extended session includes an interactive budgeting activity and top tips from currents students on how to manage money at university. Reflecting on their time at Leeds, current undergraduates discuss their personal experiences and present a variety of objects that depict their life as a University of Leeds student. The session offers an insight into the realities and highlights of being a university student. There will be opportunities to ask questions throughout the session. An opportunity to ask current students about their life as an undergraduate and discover tips on how to survive and thrive as a student. Topics include: living independently for the first time, budgeting and finance, effective study tips, making the most out of student life. This session will discuss the University s qualification reform position along with information on subject choices and combinations. There will also be an opportunity for you to feedback on your experiences of supporting students with their decision making. A session focusing on what your students can be doing in Year 12 to prepare themselves for applying to university. We also explore how your students can develop the skills required for university level study such as critical thinking, independent study and research skills. An overview of developments at the institution including new courses, admissions updates and student services along with general information on key issues affecting students applying to Higher Education. Examines the purpose of the academic reference in the context of the whole application form. We will explore what you do already, how you approach the reference and how to make it effective for university admissions.
