1 Flinders University Faculty of Science and Engineering 2016 High School Events and Workshop Program
2 In 2016 we are delighted to offer a range of events and initiatives in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Our programs are designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to explore different fields of STEM through interactive events and hands-on workshops and experiences. We also believe it is crucial to support those who support the students, so we have a number of professional development sessions for STEM teachers to take part in, as well as the opportunity for parents and caregivers to come along and experience STEM at Flinders for themselves. We look forward to working with you and your students in Save the Date Teacher Professional Development Event Series Following the success of last year s suite of Teacher Professional Development evenings, we are pleased to announce that in 2016, we will continue to support STEM teachers professional development by offering four sessions over the year. The program will be held in the evening from 5:30pm 8:30pm and will include refreshments and light snacks. Each event will follow a similar program and involve a key note address from one of our academics about the research they are undertaking and hands-on workshops that you may be able to take back to your class room, or bring your students to at Flinders. Each evening is designed for teachers in specific areas of science. However, you are more than welcome to come along to all of the events. Science Term 1 Thursday 17 March Technology Term 2 Thursday 12 May Engineering Term 3 Thursday 1 September Maths Term 4 Thursday 27 Oct To register your interest in Teacher Professional Development events, please silc@flinders.edu.au

6 Workshops The 2016 High School Workshop Program offers an enhanced learning experience for year 11 and 12 high school students. With direct links to the SACE curriculum, our series of workshops aim to extend and complement your teaching resources. Full descriptions of all workshops can be found on our website flinders.edu.au/science_engineering/ future-students-high-schools-&-community/interactive-workshops All workshops run for 60 minutes unless otherwise stated. IT and Technology Workshops A Circuit of Circuits Flii Construction and Follow-up Programming (1.5 hours each) Serious Games App Development Sound through Light Electronics Description Students explore a range of fundamental electronics concepts by working in teams to construct a variety of small circuits. A microcontroller is a complete computer on a single chip. Students solder components together to construct their own microcontroller-based electronic game. Follow up workshops where students learn how to program new features for their device are available and recommended. Students use a primarily visual interface to develop their own Android app aimed at improving and maintaining users cognitive functioning, such as memory. Students investigate some properties of light and sound waves by building an electronic circuit that allows them to emit signals with an LED and receive those signals using a small solar panel. Students need to bring along a device for playing music that has a standard audio jack (e.g. mp3 player or smart phone).
