3 1. The advantage to be at the edge of the time... There are many reasons why you should set up a Keep me Posted (KMP) alert in SciFinder: Monitor the new publications in your area of interest to be aware of competition and new developments Follow publications of authors or companies Find new compounds which are of interest to you. This feature is absolutely unique to SciFinder and of premier importance! Find new publications connected with known substances. SciFinder smarts help you to retrieve all relevant publications in a timely manner 3

More good reasons why you should set up a Keep me Posted (KMP) alert in SciFinder: The Notify me by feature of SciFinder KMPs significantly saves you time and pushes you a bit to current awareness! Check who is citing your papers (this is called the Ego Search ) 4

Content matters SciFinder has the unique combination of two of the biggest scientific bibliographic databases CAplus and Medline together with the world s largest substance database: CAS Registry This setup delivers superior results, if you are searching chemical topics, in comparison to full text searches or searching pure bibliographic databases or - even worse - just the web... On top there is even the possibility to search for molecules which are described by generic descriptions (Markush) in patents, which are included in Marpat 5

The databases Registry and CAplus are updated daily For patents CAS has a guaranteed schedule for indexing: erage/ Journals and other sources may have a variable timeliness. It depends on countries, editors, form of delivery and other issues. Core journals are entered within 7 days in CAplus urnals.html 8

9 3. How to set up a KMP Please conduct the search in SciFinder until you have the desired results but take care: don t make your search too narrow for a KMP! When you are happy with the results of your search, click the button Add KMP Alert Here is KMP button Click it to set up a profile! 9

10 3. How to set up a KMP Enter a meaningful title Exclude previously retrieved to avoid double alerts, when indexing of a document proceeds Per default a KMP ends after 1 year. A notification is sent 2 weeks before it will expire and you can extend it if needed. 10

11 3.1. Research Topic You should always set up a KMP on a Research Topic for your molecule(s) of interest! Remember the way data is entered into SciFinder! Title and Abstract along with the bibliographic data are entered first in CAplus then Indexing and the assigning of CAS Registry Numbers will take place - but that takes time as it is a human effort! A KMP on Research Topic might find an important article or a patent application earlier than a KMP on the chemical structure! 11

13 3.2 Structure- or Substructure Searches It is very meaningful to set up an Exact Structure Search KMP on a known substance: SciFinder will alert you if new FAMILY members, like salts, mixtures, polymers with other additional monomers are reported! This type of search can t be done with the search of a chemical name! If you choose to retrieve the references and then create the alert, you will be alerted if the substance shows up in a new journal article or patent (see the example of the Spiriva KMP later) 13

14 3.2 Structure- or Substructure Searches: Special issue with Stereochemistry Attention: if you search a structure with defined STEREOCHEMISTRY, a KMP will retrieve all possible Stereoisomers! In case your initial search with a structure with defined stereochemistry retrieves no results, you can t set up a KMP. Please reenter the substance with normal bonds! 14

22 3.3 Markush Structure Searches For researchers in Industry, in the areas of pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals, a MARKUSH search should be a MUST! In Academia it is also interesting, whether a company might claim a structure of interest in a generic claim. Please keep in mind: a MARKUSH structure search always retrieves directly the PATENT DOCUMENT in CAplus. It is necessary to analyze the full text of the patent to judge where the generic claim hits your searched structure. 22

24 3.3 Markush Structure Searches A Markush Search will always retrieve directly Patent Documents! This is no Substance Search in Registry, but for generic claims in MARPAT. 24

25 3.3 Markush Structure Searches A Markush search complements a Substructure Search in Registry. Hits however might be far away from what you expect! 25

26 3.4 Author and Company Searches Author and Company searches can only have one name or company in one KMP profile. Tip: think about your search! If you would like to monitor the patents of company a, b, c, d and e in the area of antibiotics it might make sense to better start with the Topic search! If you need more companies/authors set up more KMP profiles (Limits: 100 Industry, 50 Academics). For Author names include all relevant spellings. To be alerted about citations, choose Get Citing and then set up the KMP on this answer set. For company name searches best search with a significant part of the name. 26

27 3.5 Patent Number Searches An alert on a patent number can be useful, if you want to be updated if a new family member is coming up 27

33 6. Expiration of KMPs In SciFinder on the Web a Keep Me Posted profile will automatically expire after 1 year but you can extend it, if you still need the search. SciFinder will send you a mail 14 days before expiration of a KMP profile. Just click on the link provided in the to extend your KMP profile. Attention: you will only get an alert if you have enabled the notification! For sure you can always extend KMPs in SciFinder under KMP Results too! 33

35 7. Limits and Help You may set up to 100 KMP profiles (Academic: 50) 20 results per KMP Alert profile (regardless of the amount of hits per result) In a case of doubt: have a look at our HELP or send a mail to help@cas.org Final remark: Never give up! Please ask CAS! 35
