6 Topic sentence- address opposition While some may argue that there is no reason to bring up an ugly history and the use of the "n" word makes people uncomfortable, it is precisely the necessity of confronting this past that make the novel so important and vital to the curriculum. In addition to being a reminder of this country's past prejudice and of teaching moral lessons, To Kill a Mockingbird should be included in school curriculum because it is a metaphor of this nation's loss of innocence. The "n" word was used prolifically during the 1930s in the South and thus the novel accurately portrays our history. It should make people uncomfortable. It is only by facing that uncomfortable truth that people can understand and face this country's flaws.
