HW: Outline and 8 quotes from your sources. 6 pro your argument and 2 con for your argument. You can use the back of your outline to write your quotes or a separate sheet of paper. You can type/ cut and paste, etc. but make sure you have the author or website where these come from. Learning Targets: I can write an effective thesis statement I can write an outline to my essay 12/7 T~ thesis statement is a statement (never a question) that can be proven with examples. It is not a fact. subject breaking the law + limiting idea justified sometimes It is necessary to break laws under certain circumstances in order to right a severe wrong, change an unjust law, and advance the cause of freedom, provided no one will potentially be hurt as a result. Thesis Statement
Prompt: Is breaking the law ever justified? subject breaking the law + limiting idea justified sometimes It is necessary to break laws under certain circumstances in order to right a severe wrong, change an unjust law, and advance the cause of freedom, provided no one will potentially be hurt as a result. Thesis Statement Intro Thesis statement Body P#1 Body P #2 Body P #3 Refutation Essay structure
Opinion Statement: Thesis Paragraph #2 Paragraph #3 Address Opposition Outline Prompt: Choose any novel (or play) we have read this semester and convince your reader (me, the English Department, Mr. Utterback) that it should (or should not) be required reading for the English curriculum at Clackamas high School. prompt
Opinion Statement: Thesis To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee should be included in the curriculum at Clackamas High School because it is a reminder of racially unjust times, a provider of moral lessons, and a metaphor of our country's loss of innocence. Paragraph #2 Paragraph #3 Address Opposition Answer to refutation Outline Another solid thesis statement To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee should be included in the curriculum at Clackamas High School because it teaches valuable life lessons, provides the reader with an important historical period, and delivers an interesting story through the eyes of a child. Jun 7-8:50 AM
Paragraph #2 (Body 1) TKAM provides an essential reminder of the racially unjust times in U.S. history as it highlights the unfair treatment of African Americans. The Lynch mob Tom Robinson's trial Tom's death (shot 17 times) P.2 Paragraph #3 Furthermore, the novel teaches the reader valuable lifelessons. P.3
Topic sentence- address opposition While some may argue that there is no reason to bring up an ugly history and the use of the "n" word makes people uncomfortable, it is precisely the necessity of confronting this past that make the novel so important and vital to the curriculum. In addition to being a reminder of this country's past prejudice and of teaching moral lessons, To Kill a Mockingbird should be included in school curriculum because it is a metaphor of this nation's loss of innocence. The "n" word was used prolifically during the 1930s in the South and thus the novel accurately portrays our history. It should make people uncomfortable. It is only by facing that uncomfortable truth that people can understand and face this country's flaws. People must face the past in order to grow. refutation Prompt: Does America still have to fight for freedom? Is America truly the land of the free? subject Freedom + not yet limiting idea America is not quite the land of the free and freedom still needs to be fought for because there is not equal opportunity for all, privacy rights are being violated, and elements of racial injustice still exist. Thesis Statement
Thesis America is not quite the land of the free and freedom still needs to be fought for because there is not equal opportunity for all, privacy rights are being violated, and elements of racial injustice still exist. Paragraph #2 (Body 1) America is not truly free because equal opportunity does not exists for all people of this country. Men still make more money than women in the same job. Job statistics USA reported that... One percent of the US population has the bulk of the wealth in this country while X% of the population live below the poverty level. People that live in poverty are unlikely to get out of it because they cannot afford to go to college. P.2 Topic sentence- address opposition Although African American slaves were freed with the thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution and legal segregation was ruled unlawful in 1964, racial disparity still exists in this country. One needs to look no further than the Clackamas High School cafeteria in Oregon to find evidence that the races are still separated. Students eat their lunch and sit at tables based on the color of their skin. One can see... While this segregation may be on a voluntary basis for some, students feel peer pressure to associate with their own race or with those affiliated with the same religion. Racial slurs and degradations can still be heard on campuses around the country. Additionally crime statistics show that more African Americans and Latinos are incarcerated than whites in the US. According to the FBI Crimes Statistics Bureau, in 2010,... refutation
