ABC Book Project Example
Helpful Notes 1. You are making a physical BOOK, not a PowerPoint. This pretend example is just for clarification. 2. No staples, paper clips, 3- ring, or slider binders. 3. No messy glue, rough- cut edges, or visible tape this book should look professional! 4. Pages MUST be numbered. 5. No smaller that 8x10, no larger than 11x Front & Back cover should be thicker than regular paper.
Helpful Notes 1. To begin, it would be useful to make a planning grid. Or, you can print a blank planning grid from your teacher s website. 2. Your project must have a Table of Contents, which should be inside the front cover. 3. You have to write 26 paragraphs one for each letter of the alphabet. 4. You may type the paragraphs, but you are expected to embellish the book with pictures, etc.

Atticus says, You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it (Lee 30). This quotation is significant in the novel because it explains a value that Atticus is trying to instill in his children: to be empathetic and understanding towards others. Black people aren t treated equally in Maycomb; most townspeople are racist. This is demonstrated in To Kill a Mockingbird through the trial of Tom Robinson. Even though he was innocent, an all- white jury convicted him and sent him to jail for allegedly raping a white woman. If Tom had been black, he would have been punished much less if at all. Calpurnia is the nanny and housekeeper for the Finch family, but she is really more than that. Because the children s mother died when Scout was 2, Cal fulfills the maternal role in the household. Cal raises the children as though they are hers, and takes just as much pride in them as she does her own children. Page 1
Diction is extremely important in To Kill A Mockingbird. It s the only element of literature that is mentioned explicitly in the novel; Scout says that Miss Maudie s diction was deadly. There are additional times when diction is important, such as when Calpurnia takes the children to the black church and has the confrontation with Miss Lula. The children notice Cal s ability to code- switch and are surprised by the way that her diction changes in that situation. Every Sunday, people in Maycomb, Alabama have revolving doors. The tradition in the town is to visit with neighbors after church to catch up on gossip and check on their friends. This is part of the reason why the Radleys are so unusual: on Sunday afternoons, their front door is closed and the house is dark. Socialization is very important in this small Southern town, where hospitality and charm are paramount. For as long as I can remember, I ve heard that To Kill A Mockingbird was a great book. Now that I ve read it, I see why. Of all the characters I admire, I m especially drawn to Atticus Finch. Atticus is a wonderful father, an excellent lawyer, and he demonstrates equality and justice in all areas of his life. Atticus doesn t always choose the easy road, and defends Tom Robinson even though he s pretty much guaranteed to be defeated. Page 2
