1 Restore plain line track geometry to operational condition Overview This unit is about restoring plain line track geometry to operational condition by manual or mechanised means. This unit consists of one element: 1. This element is about restoring track geometry to operational condition and the complexity of repairs to be carried out will be influenced by geometrical tolerances. You must be able to mark out and carry out repairs on all types of track including those with steel, concrete and wood bearers. Dimensional clearances must be taken into account at all times. The nature of the repairs using mechanical or manual equipment may include as appropriate: 1. top 2. alignment 3. cross level 4. track gauge The type of assets to be repaired will be: 1. plain line The quality standards and accuracy to be achieved will be approved by your organisation and the manufacturer and must include restoring components to within operational tolerances. This unit is for all supervisors carrying out engineering activities in permanent way. PPLREP21 1
2 Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 work safely at all times, complying with your organisation's procedures P2 source and interpret the relevant specifications P3 prepare the worksite for repair, which may include as appropriate: P3.1 Measuring components P3.2 Carrying out health and safety checks P4 carry out the repairs within agreed timescales using approved materials and components, methods and procedures P5 ensure that the repaired asset meets the specified operating conditions P6 produce accurate and complete records of all repair work carried out PPLREP21 2
3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: K1 the relevant health and safety legislation, regulations and safe working practices and procedures as appropriate to the activity K2 how to source and interpret engineering specifications as approved by your organisation K3 the methods, techniques and procedures for worksite repair as approved by your organisation including those that are both temporary and permanent K4 how incorrectly repaired plain line can affect the safety and performance of the permanent way K5 your organisation's procedures for the care and control of mechanised equipment, including calibration requirements K6 your organisation's procedures for recording maintenance activities, including both paper based and computer based K7 your organisation's methods and techniques for ensuring that repaired assets meet the specified operating conditions K8 the importance of carrying out repair activities in the specified sequence and agreed timescale K9 the relevant reporting lines and procedures as approved by your organisation K10 the likely impact of your work on the operations of other departments and the impact of their work for you K11 the limits of your own authority and responsibility and those of others involved PPLREP21 3
