1 This year the Binghamton City School District is using ELA modules recommended by the New York State Education Department. These modules are built around the Common Core Standards and include more informational texts as well as fiction, literature, or stories. Below are ways you can support your child in reading, writing, and listening for Kindergarten. Library Card Broome County Public Library offers a library card to all residents free of charge. An application can be downloaded here: Library cards are free to all who live or own property in Broome, Chenango, Delaware or Otsego Counties. Your card can be used at any of the 4CLS libraries in these counties. You can find a list of all of the 4CLS libraries on their Web site. The public library located on Court Street in downtown Binghamton has an extensive collection of children books including easy readers for practicing independent reading, picture books for reading aloud with an adult or older sibling, and chapter books. The loan period is 3 weeks and can be a fun trip together to talk about interests. A librarian is available to help you find books that match your child s interests and reading level. 3 T s Strategy This strategy can be used to improve communication, vocabulary, and expression. Use this strategy when reading a book, shopping, talking about an event, or just talking about what happened that day. Tune in to what the child is looking at. Talk about it and ask questions. Take Turns talking between parent and child. Independent Reading (100 Book Challenge) Encourage your child to choose BOTH non-fiction books and fiction books. The Common Core Standards allow equal time for non-fiction and fiction texts. Every night, your child should spend 30 minutes reading both independently and with you as part of a read aloud experience. Point to the cover of the book (or illustrations and pictures inside) and ask What is going on in this book? What do you see that makes you say that? Read the author and illustrator names. Ask What does the author do? What does the illustrator do? For informational texts (non-fiction): Ask what person, place, or thing does this picture show? Ask What are some important facts we learned from the book? For literature (fiction): Ask What happened first in the story?...second or Next?...Last or finally? Look back in the book if your child has a hard time answering. Ask them to find the page the answer might be on. Re-read the page to see if they can find the answer by listening again. Talk to your child about the parts you found most interesting. Point to words that are interesting or complicated or just sound different to you and talk about why you think that. Rhyming Books or Poems Choose rhyming books, nursery rhymes or poems to read out loud everyday. As your child gets familiar with the pattern of rhymes, stop at the end of the line and ask your child to fill in the rhyming word. For example:

2 Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you (child says are). Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the (child says sky). When the blazing sun is gone, When the nothing shines upon, Then you show your little light, Twinkle, twinkle, all the (child says night). Then the traveller in the dark, Thanks you for your tiny (child says spark), He could not see which way to go, If you did not twinkle (child says so). Use attached Nursery Rhymes for more nursery rhymes with coloring sheets. Hang finished sheets on your refrigerator or turn them into magnets. Parents are most familiar with the terms topic sentence and thesis statement, which mean the same as claim. In any form of writing, students are asked to make a statement or claim and back it up or support this claim with supporting evidence. Teachers will ask students to draw pictures, write words or sentences. Student who can express claims out loud and give reasons why will be able to write with evidence more successfully. At home, talk about interesting news stories or books and ask your child to explain his/ her thinking by sharing specific examples. Use the terms claim and evidence in your discussions to help your child become confident in his/ her abilities. Instead of watching TV or playing a video game, encourage your child to draw a picture that shows his/her thinking from your conversation. Ask him/her to add words to the picture. Talk about other words that mean the same thing.
