1 The Duke of Edinburgh s Bronze Award Year 9 Application Pack
2 Dear Parents and Carers I am pleased to inform you that Priory School intends to offer the Duke of Edinburgh s Award for a second year to a limited number of Year 9 students. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award was recently voted by the United learning Trust, a consortium of major employers, as the extra-curricular award that they see as most important for potential applicants to have attained at school. The award requires those taking part to complete 4 sections: Skill (learning a skill at least once a week) Physical (participating in a physical activity at least once a week) Volunteering (being involved in an activity that benefits others once a week) Expedition (completing a training and assessed 2 day hike with an overnight camp) The Skill, Physical and Volunteer sections must be completed once a week with two of these sections to be completed over three months and one over six months. Students will be assisted in their selection of appropriate activities and monitored by teachers throughout the delivery of the award programme. However completion of these sections will primarily be the responsibility of the students taking part. Students will take part in a training walk, a practice expedition and an assessed expedition in the spring and summer of Training for this section will happen once a week in an afterschool session which will take place between 3:15 and 4pm on a Friday. Completion of the award requires commitment from participants not only to the activities but also to the on-going training, therefore all students taking part will be asked to attend the scheduled extra-curricular session every week and the three scheduled weekend sessions to complete the expedition section. To ensure that all participants receive a quality experience whilst studying for the Duke of Edinburgh s Award, places on the award will be offered to year 10 (in September 2014) students only and a limit of 28 places are available. Interest in the Award last year was very high and to ensure that participants are fairly chosen a rigorous selection process is used. Attached to this letter is a D of E application form and a School Medical/Permission form. We ask that students complete these froms and submit returns to the Trips Letter Box, next to Reception no later than Friday 27 June. If a large number of students apply we will interview applicants. This process will take place within school and will be finalised after the number of applicants is known. All applicants are invited to an inductory walk on Friday 4 July Information regarding the content of this event can be seen on the attached leaflet. Many students at Priory School possess a wide variety of qualities, abilities, skills, resources and home support that would make them perfect candidates for the Duke of Edinburgh s Award. I am sure that over the next year we will create a fun, informative, active and encouraging learning environment which will stretch, challenge and equip those taking part. Yours sincerely Mr M Queen (Priory School Duke of Edinburgh s Award Coordinator)
3 Duke of Edinburgh s Award Introduction Walk. Friday 4 July 2014 In order to gain a Duke of Edinburgh s Award you need to complete an expedition. For many people this can be the most difficult and at the same time rewarding part of the award. To make sure you know exactly what you re getting yourself into we would like to invite all DofE applicants to take part in an introductory activity. Students should assemble at 3:25pm at the Priory School entrance. Students will be split into groups and will complete some challenges as they walk from Priory School towards Black Cap over the South Downs and back to school. Students will be able to walk home or be picked up at 6pm. Kit list: For the walk applicants will need: Waterproofs * Hat * Food for the day Suitable footwear * Bottle of water * Clothes that may get muddy! (walking boots are most suitable) * Backpack As we are expecting high numbers of applicants, this introductory activity will be used to help determine who will be chosen to study for the Award. Nonattendance will impact this decision. j/trips/dofe/dofe Application PackY9
