1 Background The new Remote Desktop and solution is built on the very latest Microsoft Server platform including multiple virtual servers. This provides us with a scalable, maintainable and supportable solution going forward. The new remote access solution runs on Microsoft Internet Explorer from any version from 6 up. If you do not use Internet Explorer as your browser of choice, let us know and we can provide information and assistance. Leave this selected if the computer you use is accessed by other people without their own unique login (eg a shared home computer). If you are the only user of the computer or have your own login to the computer (eg Teacher Toolkit) you can select This is a private computer This option retains your username in the username field so you only have to enter your password the next time to visit the page. 3 Remote Desktop & RemoteApp To run a RemoteApp simply click the icon of the application you wish to run. This will start the application loading as shown by the popup window. A RemoteApp is an application running on the HOST SERVER (i.e. in the school) and but presenting itself on your computer. It will look like it is running locally but it is not. Remote Desktop & 3

4 Remote Desktop There may be times when access to a full desktop is required. If you need a full remote desktop session select the Remote Desktop icon. You may be asked to login to the remote desktop this is dependent on the version of Windows you are running locally. If you are prompted enter your normal School username and password. A full desktop session will load and provide you with the same access as if you were in school. The new remote desktop maps allows you to access school network drives and your local computer drives seamlessly and simultaneously. This means you can copy files between drives directly without having to , use a USB drive etc. You can now also copy and paste between your local Windows session and the Remote Desktop (e.g. text, documents etc).
