1 Grade 8 Unit 2 Pythagorean Theorem Applications Work with radicals and integer exponents Assessment Plan 8. EE.2 Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations. Evaluate square roots of perfect squares and cube roots of perfect cubes. (: Type 1) Know there are numbers that are not rational and approximate them by rational numbers. 8. NS.2 Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare and put on number line diagram. (: Type 1) Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem 8. G.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. (PBA: 8. C.5.3) 8. G.7 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths. (PBA: 8. C.5.3; : Type 1) 8. G.8 Apply the Pythagorean to find distance between two points in the coordinate system. (PBA: 8. C.5.3; : Type 1) Solve realworld and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres. 8. G.9 Know and apply formulas for volumes of cones, cylinders and spheres to solve problems. (: Type 1) Unit Supporting Standards (Supporting standards should be used to create a context for Unit Standards, and should not be explicitly taught) Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. 8. EE.7 Solve linear equations in 1 variable (PBA: Type 1)
2 Transfer: Students will apply concepts and procedures regarding the Pythagorean Theorem to represent, interpret, prove, and solve realworld and mathematical problems in both two and three dimensions and in the coordinate system. Ex: A rectangular prism has a height of 12 cm, length 6 cm, and a width of 4 cm. What is the length of the interior diagonal? Ex: You live at point A and your friend lives at point B.. What is the shortest distance between your house and your friend s house?
