1 Download the package for Mac OSX Mountain Lion (10.8), Mavericks (10.9) from and double-click on it to start the installation process. (If you are using a lower version of Mac OSX, you cannot install this version)

2 When the Release Notes appear, click on Continue

3 Accept the default installation location. (This will be your local disk on your Mac. Please note that the name may be different if your local drive has been renamed. )

4 You will get a security message asking for permission to install the software. Enter the password (and change the name if necessary) for your account that has administrator access.

5 You will then see a message that the files are being installed:

6 After a few minutes, you will get a message that the installation was successful: Click Close to exit the installer.

7 On the dock, click on the Applications icon and then double-click on the Tivoli Storage Manager folder to view its contents.

8 Double-click on the TSM Tools for Administrators (Robot) icon to start the application.

9 You will then see the TSM Tools for Administrators Application Window. Select Start the Client Acceptor Daemon and click OK. You will see this message stating that the acceptor daemon may take a few minutes to start. Click OK The application will ask for an Administrator account and password.

10 After a few minutes, you will get an acknowledgement that the scheduler (Client Acceptor Daemon) has started successfully. Click Ok to close the program. Go to Applications on the dock, then double-click on the Tivoli Storage Manager folder, then doubleclick on the TSM for Administrators application. You will then be asked to configure the client: Click Next

11 Click Next again to create the new options file.

12 Enter a Node Name, and then click Next

13 Accept the default TCP/IP communications protocol, by clicking next.

14 Enter the Server Address and Port Number provided by the UCBackup team. Then click next. (If you do not have this information, please contact us at

15 Enter the Server Stanza provided by the UCBackup team. Then click next. (If you do not have this information, please contact us at

16 Click Next to accept the default Include/Exclude list.

17 Click Next to accept the default Common File Exclusion Selection list.

18 Click Next to confirm and apply the configuration.

19 You will then get a message stating that the configuration is being completed.

20 You will then be asked for your login and password. Enter the information that you received from the UCBackup Team. (If you do not have the login and password, please contact us at Click Finish to complete the configuration.

21 The application will then launch.

22 Click on Edit, Client Preferences.

23 Click on the Authorization tab, and then select Password Generate.

24 In the Location box, set the directory to /Library/Logs/Tivoli/tsm, and then click OK. Close the application.

25 Relaunch the TSM Tools for Administrators application by selecting Applications from the dock, then double click the Tivoli Storage Manager folder Then double click the TSM Tools for Administrators (Robot) icon.

26 Click OK to launch the Tivoli Storage Manager Application: Enter the name and password for an account that has Administrator rights on the computer. Enter the user id (Node Name) and password supplied by the UCBackup team. Then click Login. (If you do not have this information, please us at

27 When the application launches, click Backup

28 When the Backup window launches, expand the Local section, then select a small file from your hard drive by clicking in the box next to the filename. A checkmark will appear in the box of the selected file. (The default name for your drive will be Macintosh HD, however it will be different if you or your administrator have changed it)

29 Click the Backup button. Depending upon the size of the file that you chose, the backup should complete almost instantaneously and you will get a message that says Backup Completed. Click OK. Your test backup has now been saved to the server and your configuration is correct. (If you get any error messages at this point, please us at ucbackup@berkeley.edu for assistance) Click OK to close the Backup Completed window. Close the Backup Report window.

30 Next, Click on Utilities Click on Change Password

31 Enter the following: Current password received from UCBackup. If you do not have this information, please us at New Password (Change this to anything you want. We strongly recommend a password that includes letters and numbers, but no special characters. Some special characters create problems for the server) Verify Password (Re-enter the same password) Then click Change You will get confirmation of the change (Password successfully changed) Click OK You can now close the application
