Although some of my thoughts may work only in Japanese contexts (especially No.5 and No.3), I d like to share what I found through as followings... No.5 Vision Sharing Partners I decided not to use the term Sponsors, but to use the term Vision Sharing Partners. I got to know the term Vision Sharing Partners, when I was invited to TEDx conference. On that day, I was wondering about what kinds of relationship we can build between large companies and FabLabs. Two reasons behind my indecision. One - especially in Japan, we have not a culture of donation. Two - FabLab conference is neither an academic conference nor a business show. It is one-week creative summer camp. (Hironori Iwasaki, one of Fab9 committees, proposed this description. I like this). But its vague for most business people. So I was wondering how I can explain value of this event and provide incentives to large companies to collaborate. Under such circumstances, the term Vision Sharing Partners inspired me a lot!! Yes! vision first! I decided to organize monthly (in total 4 times) Vision Sharing Meeting with companies in order to share, think and confirm visions for. Although the process was new to most of us, I think it worked. Moreover, I strongly recommended participants from companies not to wear formal suits, but to wear T-Shirts (for making things!), not to exhibit consumer products but radical prototypes (in order to collect feedbacks from FabLab People!), not to prospect short-term marketing but to share (r)evolutional changes of the world. Successful maybe. I hope most of participants from companies inspired by and acquired the FabLab network. Fund raising? No explanation necessary. No.4 5-days Food Workshop One month before the conference, a committee member said Food workshops are mainly for socializing, meaning... making new friends through cooking together. We shouldn t stick to sophistication of food and tastes so much. For instance, cup noodle or instant ramen would be enough!. But Japanese committee member said like We believe good cuisine makes people more happy. We cannot give up qualities.. Food Workshops were carefully designed to balance of the two - socializing (cultural exchanges) and enjoying cuisine. Expensive sushi or wines were not provided, however, showing/sharing skills and brave trials in cooking for each participants taste by creativity and ingenuity were fruitful! I myself did not contribute much for Food Workshop preparation. Thank you for Daijiro, Chiaki and all the staffs from FabCafe. Japanese do not have culture of home party, but Social Cooking is getting popular now. I found it is a good idea to have a shared kitchen next to FabLab. FabCafe is the precedent. No.3 Hospitality 2.0 Japanese have a special culture of Hospitality (omotenashi). I myself love it and am proud of it. But I dare said at a committee meeting, Too much hospitality will make separation between guests and hosts. Why don t we give up some kinds of hospitality for some cases? Why don t we think about participants involvement and inclusion as well? Producers and Consumers are getting merged into Prosumers. Likewise, Hosts and Guests are getting merged into... let s say, Hoguest. FabLab People are active (fiercely!) participants. So I was trying as much as possible to make rooms for everyone to improvise. To be honest, it was not easy. Japanese people prefer scheduled, pre-fixed, planned programs. Yes, I am also one of Japanese, who has a tendency of a perfectionist. I think I myself value hospitality for some cases. On the other hand, I learned a lot from Jazz music - it s totally different from score-based (for example, orchestra) music. Jazz is not a music for tracing scores, but a music for creating scores, on site, in real-time, through improvizational communication with others. In my temporal conlusion, hospitality 2.0 is basically about creating imporovised harmony. Most important thing is mindset, to enjoy everything! No.2 After the Conference - Social Fabrics was a big wonderful wave. FabLab people were fantastic typhoons. But we carefully have to avoid that FabLab is going to be a hype. We are carefully against the extreme hype force. FabLab is an open-ended project, we have to try to make it sustainable. I think we shouldn t make it consumable. Usually a hype line is described as a single line (up and down) in 2-D diagram, but is it true? What if we could draw Fab-Ecosystem, consists of multiple lines (web, otherwise, social-fabric?). I love the idea of 100k FabLab, Mobile FabLabs, FabLab Nomads, any kinds of new inventions for expanding the potential possibilities of FabLab. Japan team had a FabLab Japan meeting a few days after, for discussing Projects after. Fortunately we have lots of exciting action plans - especially collaborations with FabLab in overseas- hopefully keep working with you! We all know FabLab is Fabrication Laboratory, and Fabulous Laboratory so far. But if I add the new interpretation, FabLab is the Lab for making (social) Fabric. World Wide Web is complied into WWW. Similarly, FabLab is all about Fabrication, Fabulous, and Fabric - in this case, invisible, social fabrics. Of course, our fabrics sometimes got visible - as Walter from Peru performed in Fabbercise! No.1 How to Make invisible things The last but not least. I was so happy to work with nice committee members- Youka, Shohei, Daijiro, Kazuo, Hirononi, Yasuaki, Hiroki, Makiko, Kanako, Yutaka, Ken, Yuichi... To tell the truth, we hadn t had any experience on organizing international event - to be honest, even a local conference. It s literally new to all of us. A govenment sector in Japan was so worried the lack of experience that they were reluctant to give us an official support... However, we all were good learners. Everytime we made mistakes, a new friend suddenly appeared to offer us a help, we recovered, and overcame. We helped each other for most of the time, and grew up together. As I wrote, FabLab Conference is neither academic conference nor business show. No rigid frameworks. I just wanted to slightly modify the wonderful history of FabLab Conferences (in my case, Fab5, Fab6, Fab7 and Fab8), according to the spirit of OPEN DESIGN, as Jens introduced in his fantastic movie, and as the book OPEN DESIGN NOW precisely introduced. FabLab Conference itself is a good example of Open Design. I usually make visible stuffs in FabLab. One year ago, I thought new challenges for FabLab Conference for me was how to create invisible things - event, atmosphere, happiness, experience. I was a bit afraid, because I thought I might be bad at making invisible things, instead of being a bit good at making visible things. But now, I can say, the principle is the same. The key to success is driving the iterative spiral of learning, making, sharing, and most important thing is having a fun. Enjoy everything. was super fun for me.
