9 EDITOR S PREFACE Omne initium difficile est Omne principium difficile Omne principium grave Initii difficultas toleranda Omne vivum ex ovo The above are but a selection from among numerous possibilities in Latin of interpreting the old German proverb stating that aller Anfang ist schwer the first step is always the hardest, なんでも 初 めは 難 しい The formula is best known in German but experience standing behind the respective folk wisdom is doubtlessly universal. With the present volume we are making the second step on the tenthousand-li long way to continue the publication of our journal conceived as the official organ of the Polish Association of Japanese Studies (PSBJ). Volume One of these Analecta saw the light of the day approximately a year ago, dated It is still risky to assess its reception although no utterly negative opinions seem to have reached either the Editorial Board or the Editor, and we tried to implement conclusions from the few well-wishing suggestions so far received already in preparing the present Volume Two. Our intention is to be faithful to the etymology of the title of the journal: Latin analecta < Greek ανάλεκτα implies a selection of written passages or texts, in fragments or in their entirety and by one author or by various authors, accompanied by comments and source references, serving for discussion as well as didactic and research purposes, but originally the term was associated with Ð ναλšκτης a slave servant picking up meal crumbs from the floor < ναλšγω pick up, collect; peck out (of woodpecker), but also narrate, spread the word, and even read, have it read. Save the continuation of republishing the late Professor Jolanta Tubielewicz s 1980 monograph on superstitions, magic and mantic practices in the Heian period,

10 8 Editor s preface now a hardly accessible antiquarian rarity, this volume is devoted exclusively to literary studies; nevertheless, this limitation has been far from intentional and does not preclude publishing contributions from all other fields of studies of our principal objects of interest Japan and things Japanese. 13 渡 辺 秀 夫 古 典 解 釈 における 近 代 と 前 近 代 古 今 和 歌 集 序 の 和 歌 発 生 論 の 理 解 を めぐって われわれとエリザベス 時 代 の 文 学 とを 隔 てる 障 壁 は 当 時 に 関 する 情 報 不 足 というよりは むしろ 当 時 の 支 配 的 な 思 考 方 法 に 対 する 共 感 が 欠 けていることである 現 代 科 学 の 前 提 条 件 に 規 制 さ れてわれわれは それとは 別 の 思 考 法 の 生 み 出 したものが 容 易 に は 理 解 できなくなっている 例 えば 占 星 術 は 宇 宙 の 万 物 は 相 関 関 係 にあることを 前 提 とするコスモス( 秩 序 = 宇 宙 = 世 界 ) 観 を 受 け 入 れなければ 愚 の 骨 頂 だし また 世 界 霊 魂 (アニマ ムンディー)を 認 めなければ 輪 廻 転 生 も 迷 信 である 世 界 霊 魂 とは 個 々 人 の 魂 がそこから 出 てきては 戻 っていく 世 界 の 魂 のことである この 二 つの 信 念 を 支 持 する 経 験 的 証 拠 はない しかし ひとたびコスモス なる 事 実 を 認 めてしまえば 演 繹 論 理 学 の 規 則 により 占 星 術 も 輪 廻 転 生 も 容 認 されることになる 身 近 な 視 点 とは 全 く 違 う 視 点 が 必 要 なのである S.K.Heninger. Jr.( 注 1) はじめに( 注 2) 古 典 の 注 釈 ( 理 解 )にあって 近 代 人 としての 自 明 の 理 解 ( 暗 黙 裏 の 了 解 思 い 込 み)が 前 近 代 の 解 釈 とは 大 きく 異 なる あるいは 前 近 代 の 注 釈 内 容 が 理 解 しがたい 場 合 が 少 なくない そこには 思 想 的 な 基 盤 ( 世 界 認 識 思 考 の 枠 組 み )を 異 にする 価 値 観 の 大 きな 隔 たりがあり 結 果 として しばしば 不 明 瞭 で 誤 っ た 解 釈 が 放 置 されることとなる これを 回 避 するためには その 前 提 として 前 近 代 の 思 考 の 枠 組 み ( 人 間 観 世 界 観 )を 共 有 する 必 要 がある 現 代 をはるかに 遡 った 古 代 の 言 語 表 現 の 理 解 に 際 し 我 々はどのような 前 提 で 何 を 基 盤 として どんな 共 通 認 識 考 え 方 の 枠 組 み 思 考 の 様 式 ルール に 従 って 臨 んだらよいのか 書 き 手 は 何 を 自 明 の 前 提 よすがとして 文 を 書 いて いるのか もとより 書 記 行 為 のすべてが 意 識 的 位 相 になるわけではない むしろそ の 大 部 分 は 無 意 識 的 な ある 文 化 的 な 規 範 様 式 性 の うつわ のりもの に 依 存

14 12 Hideo Watanabe し オートマチックに 書 いているのではないか 古 典 研 究 にあって ブッキッシュ な 出 典 論 材 源 論 では 届 かない 手 法 的 限 界 に どのように 向 き 合 うのか 本 稿 で は 現 在 大 きな 疑 念 も 抱 かれず 一 般 化 された 近 代 以 降 の 通 説 の 一 例 を 批 判 的 にとりあげ 中 近 世 の 古 注 釈 類 の 解 釈 例 をも 参 照 しながら 前 近 代 の 儒 教 的 な 思 想 的 枠 組 み を 復 元 的 に 共 有 することによって それらをベースとして 成 り 立 つ 古 代 の 言 説 の 同 時 代 的 な( 本 来 の あるべき ) 解 釈 を 呈 示 したい ここで 取 り 上 げるのは 古 今 和 歌 集 序 冒 頭 部 の 和 歌 発 生 論 ( 下 文 ゴチッ ク 体 箇 所 )の 解 釈 に 関 してである やまとうたは 人 の 心 をたねとして よろづの 言 の 葉 とぞなれりける 世 の 中 に ある 人 ことわざしげき 物 なれば 心 におもふ 事 を みる 物 きくものにつけていひ 出 せるなり 仮 名 序 夫 和 歌 者 託 其 根 於 心 地 発 其 花 於 詞 林 者 也 人 之 在 世 不 能 無 為 思 慮 易 遷 哀 楽 相 変 感 生 於 志 詠 形 於 言 (それ 和 歌 は その 根 を 心 地 につけ その 花 を 詞 林 にひらくものなり 人 の 世 に 在 るや 無 為 なることあたわず 思 慮 うつりや すく 哀 楽 あい 変 ず 感 は 志 になり 詠 は 言 にあらわる) 真 名 序 一 思 想 的 枠 組 み 天 地 気 と 人 ( 情 )との 関 係 構 造 古 今 集 序 は その 内 容 からは 当 時 の 詩 論 をベースとしているが 同 時 に 様 式 的 には 各 種 の 序 ( 詩 序 書 序 集 序 等 )を 文 章 の 型 として 依 存 しつつ 書 かれた ものである 当 代 の 文 章 規 範 からは 序 という 文 章 の 型 に 寄 り 添 って 初 めて 序 たりうるわけである これは 真 名 序 とともに 仮 名 序 をも 貫 流 する 文 体 的 枠 組 み である( 仮 名 序 といえども 正 俗 の 位 相 差 はあるものの 共 通 の 漢 文 世 界 の 思 想 基 盤 上 に 成 立 している)( 注 3) そしてまた こうした 文 体 的 な 型 とともに いわ ばそれらを 支 える 思 想 的 な 型 ( 枠 組 み)について 詩 歌 の 発 生 心 情 表 出 の メカニズムを 伴 う 古 代 的 な 人 間 観 はどのようなものとして 認 識 されているかという 点 への 理 解 は この 種 の 文 章 を 読 む( 書 く) 場 合 の 基 盤 的 な 前 提 となる( 注 4) ところで 古 今 集 序 における 詩 歌 論 の 当 代 的 な 環 境 ともいうべき 六 朝 ~ 唐 代 に 至 る 詩 論 ( 文 論 ) 学 習 の 中 人 は( 人 間 の 感 情 表 出 は) 常 に 天 地 気 とのかかわ りのうちに 論 じられてきた 天 地 気 陰 陽 を 介 して 人 の 性 情 の 発 露 に 至 る 関 係 については たとえば 以 下 のように 説 明 される 人 は 天 地 の 覆 載 の 徳 ( 天 地 之 徳 )に 感 じ 陰 陽 の 気 が 合 い 交 じり( 陰 陽 之 交 ) 形 体 ( 鬼 )と 精 霊 ( 神 )が 相 会 って( 鬼 神 之 会 ) 生 まれたものであり 五 行 の 秀 気 に 感 じたゆえに 仁 義 礼 智 信 ( 五 常 )を 持 つのだ( 故 人 者 其 天 地 之 徳 陰 陽 之 交 鬼 神 之 会 五 行 之 秀 気 也 ) ( 礼 記 礼 運 ) また 天 地 の 間 四 方 の 中 央 に 住 み その 動 静 が 天 地 に 呼 応 する 人 間 は 人 の 腹 中 ( 五 臓 )に 心 があってその 動 静 が 人 と 応 じるのと 同 じく 天 地 の 心 であり また 生 類 の 最 霊 であってしかもその 心 は( 五 臓 の) 最 聖 万 物 はすべて 五 行 によって 生 じるが 人 は 最 もその 妙 気 を

15 古 典 解 釈 における 近 代 と 前 近 代 古 今 和 歌 集 序 の 和 歌 発 生 論 の 理 解 をめぐって 13 得 たもので 仁 義 礼 智 信 を 明 らかにして 五 行 の 首 (はじめ)となるものである( 故 人 者 天 地 之 心 也 五 行 之 端 也 礼 記 正 義 礼 運 孔 疏 ) 天 に 六 気 があり 降 っては 五 行 となる 云 々 春 秋 左 氏 伝 昭 公 二 五 年 とあ るように 生 命 あるものは 皆 五 行 に 感 じて 生 まれ そのうち 唯 一 人 間 のみが( 五 行 の) 秀 気 を 稟 けている それゆえ 人 は 五 行 の 秀 気 礼 記 礼 運 を 稟 けて 生 まれ るや 仁 義 礼 智 信 の 五 常 を 内 蔵 し この 五 常 から 六 情 が 生 じる( 以 上 礼 記 中 庸 孔 疏 ) あるいはまた 人 は 六 気 ( 陰 陽 風 雨 晦 明 )や 四 季 ( 五 行 の 気 の 変 遷 )のうち に 存 在 し その 清 濁 醇 醨 ( 濃 薄 )の 気 を 享 け 陰 陽 に 感 じて 移 り 変 わるもの だ から 人 生 而 静 天 之 性 也 感 物 而 動 性 之 欲 也 ( 人 生 まれて 静 か 天 の 性 な り 物 に 感 じて 動 く 性 の 欲 なり) ( 礼 記 楽 記 楽 本 というように これらの 気 の うごきやありように 応 じて 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 心 が 生 じるのだ( 以 上 礼 記 正 義 序 ) とも いう こうした 考 え 方 は 多 少 の 偏 差 を 伴 いながらもおおむね 先 秦 から 宋 代 を 経 て 共 通 する 理 解 基 盤 といえる( 注 5) 図 1 参 照 二 心 情 の 発 動 メカニズム さて 上 記 のように 礼 記 楽 記 ( 楽 本 )は 音 楽 (= 詩 歌 )の 発 生 原 論 にふれ て 人 生 まれて 静 か 天 の 性 なり 物 に 感 じて 動 く 性 の 欲 なり という ここにいう 性 とは 天 の 命 を 稟 けて 人 に 授 かった 本 然 の 性 ( 未 だ 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 情 欲

16 14 Hideo Watanabe を 発 現 せず 五 常 天 性 の 善 のみあるさま)をいう 礼 記 中 庸 に 天 の 命 ずる これを 性 と 謂 う 性 にしたがう これを 道 と 謂 う 道 をおさめる これを 教 という( 天 命 之 謂 性 率 性 之 謂 道 脩 道 之 謂 教 天 の 命 である 本 然 至 善 の 性 の ままに 従 うのが 道 であり その 至 善 の 性 に 立 ち 返 る( 復 性 )することが 修 道 ( 礼 - 教 )という 授 与 者 たる 天 が 降 ろす 命 はすなわち 授 受 者 たる 人 が 稟 けた 性 そのものである 性 とは 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 未 発 の 状 態 であり 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 情 は 物 に 感 じて 後 は じめて 動 くもの このような 外 界 の 物 ( 自 然 四 時 )に 触 発 されて 心 情 が 発 生 する という 物 心 感 応 説 については 先 秦 以 来 劉 勰 ( 文 心 雕 龍 ) 鍾 嶸 ( 詩 品 )ら 魏 晋 六 朝 期 における 成 熟 と 定 型 化 の 画 期 を 経 てやがて 空 海 の 感 興 勢 ( 文 鏡 秘 府 論 地 巻 論 体 勢 )に 至 る 極 めてオーソドックスで 伝 統 的 なものであった いずれも ( 本 来 静 かで 内 に 隠 れている) 性 が 外 界 の 物 に 触 れてはじめ て ( 動 いて 外 に 顕 れる) 情 ( 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 情 )が 発 動 するというのである なお 戦 国 期 の 孔 子 門 下 たちは このプロセスを 詳 細 に 分 析 し 外 物 にふれると 心 が 生 じ その 心 が 定 まって 志 が 生 じ 志 が 性 に 働 きかけて 情 が 発 動 するという 性 情 論 的 観 察 を 残 す( 注 6) 図 2 参 照 さて 以 上 の 儒 学 的 な 人 間 観 思 想 の 枠 組 みを 確 認 したうえで 次 項 では 同 様 の 価 値 観 を 共 有 する 前 近 代 における 当 該 古 今 集 序 の 注 釈 例 を 参 照 するこ とにしよう

17 古 典 解 釈 における 近 代 と 前 近 代 古 今 和 歌 集 序 の 和 歌 発 生 論 の 理 解 をめぐって 15 三 古 典 解 釈 における 中 近 世 北 畠 親 房 古 今 和 歌 集 註 序 ( 注 7)は 人 心 は 元 々 渾 沌 未 分 より 起 こり 天 地 人 と 気 を 同 じくし 善 悪 正 邪 凡 聖 の 区 別 なく 天 真 の 道 のみがあった 天 地 人 が 別 れて 凡 人 聖 人 の 区 別 が 生 じて 以 来 凡 人 は 六 識 ( 五 感 意 識 = 六 根 )が 盛 ん に 起 こり 本 性 を 悟 らなくなった 凡 夫 は 六 識 に 使 役 されてさまざまな 妄 念 に 捉 わ れ 三 界 流 転 の 苦 に 惑 う しかし その 本 源 ( 天 真 の 道 得 法 悟 道 )を 知 れば 凡 聖 の 差 別 はない この 道 理 をよくよく 悟 って 詠 んだならばその 歌 は 聖 言 であり 生 死 の 苦 海 を 離 脱 するよすがとなるが 現 世 の 妄 念 に 捉 われて 詠 んだ 歌 は 狂 言 綺 語 の 誤 りとなる つまり 聖 人 は 衆 生 済 度 に 日 々 務 めるがゆえに ことわざしげき 物 となるが 凡 夫 は 六 識 に 使 役 されさまざまな 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 想 念 を 抱 くがゆえに こと わざしげき 物 となるのだとする 図 3 参 照 次 に 北 村 季 吟 初 雁 文 庫 本 古 今 集 教 端 抄 ( 注 8)の 注 釈 的 理 解 は 以 下 の ようである ことわざ とは 人 間 の 日 常 生 活 に 密 着 してある わざ( 行 為 情 動 ) で 四 季 を 愛 で 長 寿 を 喜 び 死 者 を 悼 み 旅 情 離 別 の 悲 哀 あるいは 人 を 恋 い 神 仏 に 祈 るなどの 類 といい これらの わざ につけて (それぞれに 応 じた) 心 に 思 う 喜 怒 哀 楽 のことばを 連 ね 出 す( 詠 歌 する)のだという 宗 祇 注 には 仮 名 序 の

18 16 Hideo Watanabe 世 の 中 にある 人 ことわざしげき 物 なれば が 真 名 序 の 人 之 在 世 不 能 無 為 の 義 に 相 当 し その 無 為 とは 大 道 のことであり これに 対 し 其 ノ 後 黒 白 をわ かち 味 をなむる 事 すなわち 五 感 ( 或 いは 六 識 )のはたらきは 皆 ことわざ に ほかならないと 従 って 人 の 日 常 の 生 活 における 立 ち 居 振 る 舞 い( 行 住 坐 臥 ) すべてが ことわざ そのものであるという なおまた 教 端 抄 は 真 名 序 の 人 之 在 世 不 能 無 為 の 意 味 は この 世 に 生 を 稟 けた 人 間 はすべて しわざ の 無 い 者 は 無 く 折 節 に 触 れて 喜 怒 憂 思 愛 悪 欲 の 七 情 は 絶 えず 変 化 し 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 感 情 がこもごも 生 起 して 止 まないので あって( 上 の 仮 名 序 注 の ことわざとは 人 間 の 朝 夕 のさまざまあるわざ 也 に 対 応 ) これらもろもろの しわざ が 皆 歌 のたね となるのだという つまり 不 能 無 為 ことわざしげき 物 とは 外 物 に 触 発 されて 湧 き 上 がり 動 揺 してやまない 喜 怒 哀 楽 七 情 の 働 きそのものということである 図 4 参 照 図 5 参 照

19 古 典 解 釈 における 近 代 と 前 近 代 古 今 和 歌 集 序 の 和 歌 発 生 論 の 理 解 をめぐって 17 こうした 理 解 は 又 冨 士 谷 御 杖 古 今 和 歌 集 仮 名 序 注 ( 注 9)にもみられるも のである 人 は 皆 朝 寝 覚 めてから 夜 眠 るまで ことわざ が 頻 繁 に 生 起 するものであ り ここから 喜 怒 哀 楽 のこころが 発 動 するので 世 の 中 にある 人 ことわざしげき 物 なれば の 箇 所 は 喜 怒 哀 楽 ( 六 識 七 情 )の 起 こる 因 本 ( 由 縁 根 源 )を 述 べた ものであるという 即 ち ことわざしげき 物 とは 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 感 情 を 生 じる 心 理 情 感 の 発 動 メカニズムの 因 由 ( 原 理 )を 指 すというのである 四 古 典 解 釈 における 近 代 をかえりみる 近 代 以 降 現 在 に 至 る 世 の 中 にある 人 ことわざしげき 物 なれば の 部 分 の 解 釈 は 一 様 に 生 活 上 の 事 件 が 多 いので 事 物 や 行 為 がたくさんあるものだから ( 行 為 がたくさんある とはいかなる 意 味 なのだろうか) あるいは 様 々の 出 来 事 にかかわるものなので まわりにさまざまな 事 がらが 多 いものであるからなどとす る ( 注 10) 折 口 信 夫 は この 世 界 にある 人 は 非 常 にせわしない 生 活 をしてい ることだからして と 口 語 訳 したうえで 人 事 怱 忙 として と 訳 せばひと 通 りはとお るが どうも ことわざしげき 物 なれば は 不 正 確 で 右 のように 訳 してよいような 調 子 が 出 ていない と 疑 問 を 呈 する ( 注 11) いったい 事 業 繁 多 すなわち 人 は なすべきことが 沢 山 ある 多 端 多 忙 ゆえに 歌 を 詠 むとでもいうのであろうか ここでは 詩 歌 発 生 論 の 一 般 通 則 を 支 える 原 論 的 前 提 世 の 中 にある 人 というものは その 根 本 的 属 性 として ことわざしげき 物 であるがゆえに 外 物 に 触 れて 感 情 の 発 露 ( 詠 歌 )に 至 るという 古 代 儒 学 の 性 情 論 を 保 有 しな いことが 近 現 代 のこの 箇 所 の 解 釈 ( 口 語 訳 )を 曖 昧 意 味 不 明 なものにしてい る ここでもやはり 身 近 な 視 点 とは 全 く 違 う 視 点 ( 前 近 代 の 支 配 的 な 思 考 法 の 共 有 )が 必 要 なのである 南 宋 朱 熹 詩 経 集 伝 序 ( 詩 経 集 註 )は 詩 歌 はなぜうまれるのかという 問 い 対 し 先 の 楽 記 ( 楽 本 )を 引 いて 以 下 のように 応 える 礼 記 ( 楽 記 )に 人 間 は 生 まれた 時 にはその 心 は 静 か で 性 は 天 然 自 然 のままひたすらに 善 ( 性 の 体 = 天 理 )だが 事 物 と 触 れると 心 が 動 いて 喜 怒 哀 楽 の 情 欲 が 現 れるもの( 性 の 用 )だ とある 情 欲 が 現 れるとなったら 心 中 にあ れこれと 思 いを 巡 らさざるをえぬものだし 思 いが 生 じればおのずからその 思 う 所 を 言 いだす 言 葉 を 発 せずにいられぬ その 言 葉 だけでは 言 い 尽 されぬ 所 を あ るいは 短 くあるいは 長 く 嘆 く 余 りに おのずから 節 や 拍 子 となって 現 れる これが 詩 歌 発 生 のもとである と ここでもまた 本 来 の 性 ( 静 ) が 外 物 に 触 れて 七 情 の 働 きが 起 こる( 情 欲 が 発 動 する)ところに 詩 歌 発 生 の 機 縁 があるというのである 以 上 の 理 解 を 前 提 にして あらためて 古 今 集 序 をみてみよう 夫 和 歌 者 託 其 根 於 心 地 発 其 花 於 詞 林 者 也 人 之 在 世 不 能 無 為 思 慮 易 遷 哀 楽 相 変 感 生 於 志 詠 形 於 言

22 20 Hideo Watanabe English Summary of the Article Hideo Watanabe EARLY MODERN AND PRE-MODERN INTERPRETATIONS OF CLASSICAL LITERATURE INTRODUCTION TO KOKINSHŪ AND THE WAKA POETRY DEVELOPMENT THEORY In the interpretations of classical Japanese poetry there are explicit differences in approach between the early modern times and those previous. For there does exist a large discrepancy between the then, contemporary, and the now, modern values, a discrepancy that takes origin in different ways of thinking, different ideological stances. The effects of all those differences and divergences are often unclear and sometimes even misguided interpretations. The purpose of this article is to present some of the widely known and therefore undoubtedly accepted contemporary Japanese poetry theories and compare them with the explanations and interpretations originated in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The main source of the analysis is the first imperial anthology of poetry, Kokinwakashū (Collection of Poems of Ancient and Modern Times, 905), and in particular the two poetry treaties Kanajo (Introduction) written in Japanese and Manajo (Introduction) writen in Chinese. 23 Małgorzata Karolina Citko ELEMENTS OF POSSIBLY CHINESE ORIGIN IN SELECTED POEMS BY PRINCESS SHIKISHI ( ) Introduction The idea of looking at poems by Princess Shikishi 式 子 内 親 王 ( ) from the perspective of Chinese 1 intertext and appropriation of Chinese poetic images originated in both this author s research about this late-heian 平 安 (11 th c.) female poet and a class in ancient Chinese poetry she had a chance to take at the University of Hawai i at Mānoa in fall The class was given by Professor David McCraw, to whom, as a student of Japanese literature, this author is indebted for sharing his deep knowledge about Chinese poetry 2. Princess Shikishi s poetry has been given much scholarly attention in Japan and also some in Western academia there is an English translation of all her currently known poems by Satō Hiroaki 佐 藤 紘 彰. Annotated editions of all her poems and numerous publications also deal with the subject of allusions and references to earlier poems in her poetry. Thanks to such research, it has become clear that the number of allusions to poetry from sandaishū 三 代 集 3, and especially Kokin 1 Even though this author occasionally uses the word Chinese to describe poetry from the Asian mainland from now on in this article, she will make a distinction between the ancient and modern meaning of Chinese. 24 22 Małgorzata Karolina Citko Wakashū 古 今 和 歌 集 4, in Princess Shikishi s poetry is much more significant than allusions to yet older Japanese poems, e.g. from Man yōshū 万 葉 集 5,6. However, since she alluded to such a variety of earlier poems in her own work, it would be equally interesting to look at her poetry from a yet different angle; to examine whether Princess Shikishi might have read some mainland poetry and, intentionally or not (and consciously or not), incorporated some possibly Chinese elements into her own waka 和 歌. One could also look at this topic from the perspective of the wakan 和 漢 discourse, briefly discussed further on in this article, which had been at that time around for long enough to make it natural to use some images of mainland origin in waka. This author believes that mainland culture appropriated by the Japanese did create an intriguing cultural mix filtered through Japanese eyes and also Japanized many mainland poetic images. The subject of Chinese intertext in Princess Shikishi s poetry is not entirely new in the field of waka studies in Japan, since a few Japanese scholars, e.g. Nishiki Hitoshi 錦 仁, Oda Gō 小 田 剛, Yoshizaki Keiko 吉 崎 桂 子 and Akahane Shuku 赤 羽 淑 have published the results of their research 7. However, they all focus mostly on the allusions to the Tang dynasty 唐 朝 ( ) poetics, occasionally filtered through Japanese literature, e.g. the famous Heian Period tale by Murasaki Shikibu 紫 式 部 Genji Monogatari 源 氏 物 語 8, Wakan Rōeishū 和 漢 朗 詠 集 9, and sometimes refer to Hakushi Monjū 白 氏 文 集 10 by the most widely known Tang poet in medieval Japan, Bo Juyi 白 居 易 11. Thus, even though some previous scholarship 4 Kokin Wakashū is the first chokusenshū. It was commissioned by Emperor Daigo 醍 醐 (r ), and compiled by Ki no Tsurayuki 紀 貫 之 (872? 945), Ki no Tomonori 紀 友 則 (ca. 900), Ōshikochi Mitsune 凡 河 内 躬 恒 (ca. 900) and Mibu Tadamine 壬 生 忠 岑 (ca. 910). It consists of 20 books and contains 1,111 poems. See Ariyoshi 1982: Man yōshū (MYS, Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, ca ) is the first private collection of Japanese poetry. It contains many different types and forms of Japanese poems, compiled probably by Ōtomo no Yakamochi 大 伴 家 持 (717? 785). See Ariyoshi 1982: Hirai 2005: Nishiki 1992: , Oda 1988:37 41, Oda 1995a: , Yoshizaki 2001: , Akahane 1981: Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji, ca. 1008) is a tale that has been called the first great novel in world literature. It has an essentially simple plot, describing the life and loves of an erstwhile prince known, from his family name, as the shining Genji. See Nipponica Wakan Rōeishū (Collection of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Singing, ca ) is a collection compiled by Fujiwara Kintō 藤 原 公 任 ( ). It consists of about 800 poems, which are parts of Chinese poems written by the Chinese (mostly the Tang poetry 唐 詩 ), kanshi 漢 詩 Chinese poetry composed by the Japanese, and waka. See Ariyoshi 1982: Hakushi Monjū (Collection of Poems by Bo Juyi, 824) is a collection of poems by the Tang poet named Bo Juyi (cf. note 11). It contains ca. 3,000 poems and was very popular in the Heian Period (8 12 th c.). Appropriation of the Tang poetry, and especially of Bo Juyi is notable in Genji Monogatari by Murasaki Shikibu and Makura no Sōshi 枕 草 子 (The Pillow Book, ca. 1001) by Sei Shōnagon 清 少 納 言 (ca.966-ca.1025). See Nipponica Bo Juyi (Jap. Hakurakuten 白 楽 天, ) was a poet of the Tang dynasty who worked as a government official, governor in various provinces, and was exiled. Many of his poems deal

25 ELEMENTS OF POSSIBLY CHINESE ORIGIN IN SELECTED POEMS BY PRINCESS SHIKISHI ( ) 23 on the subject exists, it does not cover all significant and intriguing aspects of it, e.g. appropriation of earlier than Tang poetry images possibly domesticated as traditionally Japanese, and the later Song dynasty 宋 朝 ( ) poetry. Moreover, the subject has not been researched by a non-japanese scholar yet, so this is a chance for a new and hopefully broader interpretation. Thus, this author attempts to track down some elements of possibly Chinese origin in the poems of Princess Shikishi, who seems to be a good object of such analysis, since she was a highborn aristocrat who had access to the best poetic education available at that time. Moreover, she was acquainted with Fujiwara Shunzei 藤 原 俊 成 12 and Fujiwara Teika 藤 原 定 家 13, poets of the Mikohidari house 御 子 左 家 who were the two most respected and innovative waka poets of their era, possibly also incorporating some early Japanese and foreign poetics into their poems. There too is a strong implication that Princess Shikishi was in fact Shunzei s disciple in waka 14. Her poems are believed to be innovative for her era, thus, it would be desirable to find the sources of Chinese intertext in her poems, especially since the Kujō 九 条 house s members, who were patrons to the Mikohidari poetic house, apparently possessed extensive knowledge about Chinese literature 15. That was perhaps the channel through which the Mikohidari house was able to access Chinese poetry, since it is known that Shunzei highly valued mainland poetics, too. In fact, during Chūgūnosuke Shigeie Uta awase 中 宮 亮 重 家 歌 合 (The Assistant Master of the Empress Shigeie s Poetry Match, 1166) Shunzei praised traditional Japanese poetics of the MYS, and Bo Juyi s Hakushi Monjū. It is also believed that after this poetry contest there was another wave of interest in Chinese poetry and Wakan Rōeishū among Japanese aristocrats and poets 16. with subjects related to the politics of the court and Bo s direct experiences. He was famous in Japan already during his lifetime and it was believed that his poems were widely appropriated in the literature of the Heian Period. See Shimura 2011: Fujiwara Shunzei (or Toshinari, ) was a poet, critic, and arbiter of waka. Compiler of the seventh of the imperial anthologies of classical Japanese poetry, Senzai Wakashū 千 載 和 歌 集 (SZS, Collection of Thousand Years, 1183). Father of Fujiwara Teika ( ), with whom he managed to establish the most powerful family of poets and scholars of waka the Mikohidari. See Ariyoshi 1982: Fujiwara Teika (or Sadaie, ) was a waka poet, critic, editor, and scholar. He was one of six compilers of the eighth imperial collection, Shinkokin Wakashū 新 古 今 和 歌 集 (SKKS, New Collection of Japanese Poems from Ancient and Modern Times, 1205), and sole compiler of the ninth, Shinchokusen Wakashū 新 勅 撰 和 歌 集 (SCSS, New Imperial Collection, 1235). See Ariyoshi 1982: It is also widely known that Shunzei s poetic treatise entitled Korai Fūteishō 古 来 風 体 抄 (Poetic Styles of Past and Present, 1197) was dedicated to Princess Shikishi. It is believed that Mikohidari house poets close relationship with Princess Shikishi was motivated among other things by their relatively low social status. By associating with the members of the Imperial family, the Mikohidari house members could upgrade their position at court. See Murai 1993: Oda 1995a: Yoshizaki 2001:122.

26 24 Małgorzata Karolina Citko The question arises as to what types of Chinese intertext are found in Princess Shikishi s poems, and what the channels of such intertext were. Another important issue is the presence and significance of the wakan discourse in her poems. In order to address those questions, Princess Shikishi s biography and some information about her poetry are presented briefly, along with issues related to the wakan discourse, which are considered significant for this article, and discussed. Finally, this author translates and analyzes four poetic examples by Princess Shikishi in an attempt to find some possibly Chinese intertext outside the Tang poetics. I. Princess Shikishi and her poetry 17 Princess Shikishi was the third daughter of Emperor Go-Shirakawa 後 白 河, so by birth she was a naishinnō 内 親 王 (princess of blood). It is debatable when exactly she was born, but most scholars claim ca. 1150, whereas Murai Shunji 村 井 俊 司 argues precisely for At the age of nine or ten, Princess Shikishi was appointed to serve as a sai in 斎 院 (high priestess) 19 at the Kamo Jinja 賀 茂 神 社 20 in Kyoto and remained so for ten years until 1169 when she resigned, likely due to an illness. Probably during the 1190 s she took vows and became a Buddhist nun with the acquired 21 name Shōnyohō 承 如 法. Not much is known about her life after she retired from 22 the sai in post but it has been confirmed in both the Meigetsuki 明 月 記 by Fujiwara 23 Teika and the Minamoto Ienaga Nikki 源 家 長 日 記 by Minamoto Ienaga 24 that she 17 Emperor Go-Shirakawa ( ) was the 77 th emperor of Japan, who ruled He was deeply interested in waka, and as a retired emperor ordered Fujiwara Shunzei to compile Senzai Wakashū. See Ariyoshi 1982: His theory seems correct, since in 1150 another child was born to Emperor Go-Shirakawa, namely Princess Shikishi s younger brother from the same mother Prince Shukaku 守 覚 法 親 王 ( ). See Murai 2000: Sai in was a female relative to the Emperor, often a princess of blood, who served as a high priestess at the Kamo Shrines in Kyoto. 20 Kamo Jinja (Kamo Shrines) are two independent but closely associated Shinto shrines in Kyoto Kamigamo Jinja 上 賀 茂 神 社 and Shimogamo Jinja 下 賀 茂 神 社. 27 ELEMENTS OF POSSIBLY CHINESE ORIGIN IN SELECTED POEMS BY PRINCESS SHIKISHI ( ) 25 changed places of residence numerous times, lived in seclusion and eventually died at the beginning of The corpus of Princess Shikishi s poetry is unfortunately not as extensive as Teika s ca. 4,600 poems 26, or even Shunzei s ca. 2,600 poems 27 ; only about 400 of Princess Shikishi s poems have survived to date. Japanese scholars have been giving different numbers of her existing poems, e.g. Yamasaki Keiko 山 崎 桂 子 , Okuno Yōko 奥 野 陽 子 , Oda Gō , and Nishiki Hitoshi Kunishima Akie 國 島 明 恵 estimated that Princess Shikishi probably composed about 2,600 poems during her lifetime 32. The majority of her poems are composed in three hyakushu 百 首 sequences consisting of a hundred pieces of tanka 短 歌 (short poem), a form adopted during the reign of Emperor Horikawa 堀 河 33. Satō Hiroaki claims that the rest of Shikishi s poems were taken from similar sequences, which have been lost 34. The dates of creation of those three hyakushu sequences, commonly called the A sequence, the B sequence, and the C sequence, remain an object of argument. Kunishima claims that the A sequence was composed about 1169; that is, just after Princess Shikishi retired from the sai in post, as one of her poems from this sequence included in Shinkokin Wakashū 新 古 今 和 歌 集 35, is signed as Zensai in no Gohyakushu 前 斎 院 御 百 首 (Hundred-poem Sequence by the Former High Priestess of the Kamo Shrines) 36. Other scholars argue for a much later date of about 1194 but Yamasaki, on the other hand, claims that this sequence was composed in She emphasizes that none of the poems from the A sequence are included in the Senzai Wakashū 25 Imamura 1995: Kubota Matsuno Yamasaki 1978: Okuno 2001: Oda 1995b:3. 31 Nishiki 2001: Yasuda 1975: Emperor Horikawa ( ) was the 73 rd emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession; reigned He was deeply interested in waka. His Horikawa Hyakushu 堀 河 百 首 (One Hundred Poems for Emperor Horikawa, ) is considered to be one of the most important poetic events of the era. See Ariyoshi 1982: Satō 1993: Shinkokin Wakashū (cf. note 13) is the eighth imperial anthology of classical Japanese poetry. It was ordered in 1201 by Retired Emperor Go-Toba and completed in 1205 but underwent numerous revisions. It was compiled by Fujiwara Teika, Fujiwara Ari ie 藤 原 有 家 ( ), Fujiwara Ietaka 藤 原 家 隆 ( ), priest Jakuren 寂 蓮 (? 1202), Minamoto Michitomo 源 通 具 ( ), and Asukai Masatsune 飛 鳥 井 雅 経 ( ). Taking into account Shikishi s close relationship to Shunzei and significant position he already possessed in the poetic world at that time, it is unlikely that the A sequence had not attracted his attention, especially since nine of her later poems are included in this imperial collection 40. The B sequence is usually believed to have been created about , although Yamasaki is convinced that it was rather , whereas the C sequence 43 was composed in 1200 at the order of Retired Emperor Go-Toba 後 鳥 羽, 44. In the entry from the 5 th day of the 9 th month of the 2 nd year of the Shōji era (1200) of Meigetsuki, Fujiwara Teika describes this hyakushu sequence by Princess Shikishi as follows: 皆 以 神 妙 (all of the pieces are divine) 45, which indicates that he had a lot of respect and admiration for her poetic ability. This last sequence is especially significant due to the fact that seventy tanka were selected for inclusion in the imperial anthologies, with SKKS containing twenty-five of them. Yamasaki divides Shikishi s poetry into four sequences 46, the fourth of which he calls the D sequence and describes it as 雖 入 勅 撰 不 見 家 集 歌 (Poems Not Found in the Personal Collections Though Selected for Imperial Anthologies) 47. Some Japanese scholars followed Yamasaki s division of Shikishi s poetry into four sequences but the most frequent practice is the acknowledgement of 300 pieces as three hyakushu sequences, and other poems included in various poetic collections. Despite the limited size of her current poetic corpus, Princess Shikishi happens to be the one who, among a handful of well-respected women poets of her age 48, 38 Senzai Wakashū (cf. note 12) is the seventh imperial anthology of Japanese poetry compiled by Fujiwara Shunzei at the order of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. It has been emphasized that many private poetic collections were sources for this imperial collection, and that poetry of contemporary poets was given special attention. See Ariyoshi 1982: Yamasaki 1978: Ibid., Satō 1993: Yamasaki 1978: Go-Toba ( ) was the 82 nd emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession, reigned Go-Toba composed waka himself and in 1201, already as a retired emperor, became the host of many poetic events and eventually ordered the SKKS compilation, which is considered to be his biggest contribution to Japanese literature. He is believed to have maintained a good balance between the two rivaling poetic schools of the era Rokujō 六 条 and Mikohidari. Forty-nine of her poems are included in SKKS, which is the fifth greatest number of waka by one author in the said collection, and the greatest amount of poems by a female poet. Moreover, in the poetic treatise Go-Toba-in Gokuden 後 鳥 羽 院 御 口 伝 49, Retired Emperor Go-Toba evaluated Shikishi s poetry in the following manner: 近 き 世 にとりては 大 炊 御 門 前 斎 院 故 中 御 門 摂 政 吉 水 大 僧 正 これこれ 殊 勝 なり 斎 院 はことにもみもみとあるやうに 詠 まれき 50 When we come to more recent times, among the outstanding poets are the Former Imperial Virgin of Ōimikado, the late Nakanomikado Regent and the Former Archbishop Yoshimizu. The Imperial Virgin composed in a very polished and ingenious style 51. Go-Toba mentions Princess Shikishi (as the Former Imperial Virgin of Ōimikado) together with such valued poets of the era as Kujō Yoshitsune 九 条 良 経 52 (Nakanomikado Regent) and Jien 慈 円 53 (Former Archbishop Yoshimizu). He also describes her poetry with the expression momimomi もみもみ, which is difficult to define 54, but Go-Toba used it also in regard to Teika s poem, which would indicate a high evaluation of her style. Princess Shikishi s life is frequently interpreted as one full of sacrifices, seclusion and constant solitude. The question arises whether this assumption is based only on her biography, or perhaps an image created by conventional waka poetics 55, by 49 Go-Toba-in Gokuden (Secret Teachings of Retired Emperor Gotoba, ) is a poetic treatise by Retired Emperor Go-Toba, in which he evaluates work of many earlier and contemporary Japanese poets. From a young age he composed Chinese and Japanese poems, and later became the host of many important poetic events, e.g. Roppyakuban Uta awase 六 百 番 歌 合 (Poetry Contest in Six Hundred Rounds, ). He was a patron to the Mikohidari poetic house and is the third best represented poet in SKKS. See Ariyoshi 1982: Jien ( ) was a poet, historian and Buddhist monk, one of the SKKS compilers. Kujō Kanezane and Jien were brothers from the same mother. He was a highly valued poet of his era, and the second best represented poet in the SKKS. See Brower 1972: Gotō Shōko 後 藤 祥 子 points out that by looking at Princess Shikishi s love poetry without taking into consideration the fact that she was a woman, and focusing on the context of the long history of love poetry already existing during her lifetime, opens up new possibilities of reading her poems from the contemporary perspective. Gotō emphasizes that Shikishi s love poems are

30 28 Małgorzata Karolina Citko Princess Shikishi as a poet herself, by people surrounding her, and by a later process of medievalization, which mythicized and legendarized the lives of many Japanese poets 56. A considerable number of her poems included in the SKKS (49) and the Retired Emperor Gotoba s evaluation of her poetry quoted above prove that in her own age Princess Shikishi was perceived mostly as a great poet, and not necessarily the lonely, waiting woman 57. Thus, in the analysis of Princess Shikishi s poems the author relies on an assumption that she was a semi-professional poet highly valued for her poetic abilities by her contemporaries, which means that she composed poems according to the expectations of the poetic conventions of her time while additionally applying some innovations 58, and not necessarily deriving poetic inspirations from her personal life. However, she might have (intentionally or not) participated in the process of creating her own image as a recluse through traditional poetics that have been misinterpreted into the image of the waiting woman, which hopefully becomes clear in the analysis of her poems containing possibly Chinese elements. II. Wakan as a traditional literary discourse in Japan The so-called wakan discourse, literarily translatable as Japan and China, has been known in Japan at least since the compilation of Wakan Rōeishū in There are many Japanese academicians who have dealt with this subject matter 59 but the author would like to refer to three contemporary Western scholars representing different but important approaches to this concept: 1) Thomas LaMarre, 2) David Pollack, and 3) Ivo Smits. often composed in a male voice, which excludes the possibility of an autobiographical setting. Gotō 1996: also claims that such practice was not anything extraordinary in that era. 56 Based on Susan Matisoff s research on Semimaru s 蝉 丸 (early Heian Period) legend, one observes that medieval era people learned about high aristocratic culture through low literature and drama. Legends about earlier poets developed with time, and while some facts about them remain true, much information is added to attract the attention of the medieval and later audiences. See Matisoff 2006:XI-XIX. The image of Princess Shikishi was also medievalized, largely due to her image in a nō 能 play attributed to Komparu Zenchiku 金 春 禅 竹 ( ) entitled Teika Kazura 定 家 葛. In this play, she is presented as a mad woman, who had been once in love with Fujiwara Teika, but cannot detach herself from the world and love. 57 It has also been suggested that due to Princess Shikishi s social position as a member of the Imperial family, she was unlikely to be perceived as a woman, but rather as an Imperial persona by her contemporaries, among others Fujiwara Teika. Shikishi and Teika maintained a relatively close relationship based to a large extent on their passion for waka and no sign of their love affair may be found in historical sources. He considers Chinese poetry formal (appropriate for public presentation) and Japanese poetry informal (appropriate in private situations). Moreover, he claims that due to the existence of those distinctions, Japan consciously distinguished itself from China and other states of that time 60. On the other hand, Pollack defines wakan as placing elements of both Japanese and Chinese cultures in some sort of relationship to each other. He also emphasizes that those do not have to stand in mutual opposition and claims that certain Chinese elements were intentionally incorporated in Japanese culture to serve as a foreign, glittering and impressive background, e.g. Japanese characters kana written on Chinese paper, or Chinese themes and tales used as a more colorful archetype against which Japanese heroes would stand out due to the contrast created by emphasizing the similarities to and differences between the two cultures 61. Yet another opinion has been expressed by Smits, who points out that wakan had been more of a cultural interaction between Japan and China, or rather between Japan and Japanese visions of China 62. Moreover, he emphasizes that collections like Wakan Rōeishū demonstrate how Japanese poets appropriated Chinese literature and how they combined both languages, creating an almost bilingual culture 63. Smits thinks that Kintō s aim by compiling Wakan Rōeishū was to integrate Japanese and Chinese poetry to create a harmonious whole. However, the most convincing argument that Smits makes about wakan is the selectivity of the appropriation the Japanese obviously made in regard to Chinese culture. He emphasizes that Kintō was very selective about the poets and poems he included in Wakan Rōeishū, e.g. he completely omitted poems of Tu Fu 杜 甫 64 and other famous Chinese poets of his own time. Ultimately, Bo Juyi is the best represented poet in this poetic collection 65, which, together with the significance of Hakushi Monjū for, among others, the Mikohidari poets 66, remains crucial for the appropriation of Chinese poetics in the medieval period. There are many other interpretations and definitions of wakan; the three mentioned above, however, are probably the most significant for the area of medieval Japanese literature and the subject matter of this article. 32 30 Małgorzata Karolina Citko of this article would go one step further and allow the existence of those stylistic distinctions in the poetics and poetic styles of Japanese poets, many of whom read mainland poetry and composed poems on Chinese subjects. Pollack s definition is important since it allows the Chinese intertext to be a background, not the core, of Japanese appropriation of mainland culture. This author s scholarly approach to the idea of wakan is, however, closest to the one represented by Smits, since the level of selectivity, no matter if readers are aware or not of whatever was considered Chinese by the Japanese in the Heian Period and medieval era, is a significant factor for the analysis of Princess Shikishi s poetry. Moreover, even though Pollack also briefly mentions it in his book, only Smits clearly emphasizes that wakan is not a foreign, but a local or domestic Japanese process of appropriation of Chinese or mainland culture, not a forceful influence imposed on Japan from abroad. The channels of mainland culture and literature s appropriation in Japan were thus already established by the Japanese themselves in the Heian Period. III. Tracking the Chinese : an analysis of selected poems by Princess Shikishi The process of searching possibly Chinese elements in the poetry of Princess Shikishi is not an easy task. The reason is that by the second half of the 12 th c. a lot of the Chinese or mainland culture had been already appropriated in Japan, and by that time probably believed to be either Japanese, or domesticated Chinese. However, the analysis presented in this article and its results demonstrate that both domesticated Chinese elements and intentional allusions to Chinese poetry may be found in Princess Shikishi s poems. This author believes that studying around and about waka, which indicates the necessity of taking into account as much secondary information (circumstances of poems composition, poetic style characteristics for a given poet, poetic styles fashionable during the time of composition, the existence of the given era s poetic discourse, etc.) as possible, is equally important as the analysis of the poems. This is in fact related to the concept of intertextuality. Julia Kristeva, for whom intertextuality is a key concept, claims: a text cannot exist as a hermetic or self-sufficient whole, and so does not function as a closed system 67, since writers are first of all readers of other texts that influence them during their activity of writing. Thus, texts written and read by authors are all politically and emotionally charged, which influences everybody s perception of them. Both Kristeva and Mihkail Bakhtin, who also wrote extensively about intertextuality, argue that due to the reasons described above even discursive practices themselves are intertextual, since they influence 67 Cf. Worton and Still 1990:1.

Based on such definition of intertextuality one may conclude that authors and readers should accept and recognize the inevitable intertextuality of their activities of writing, reading and participating in the discourse. This is the academic approach to the concept of intertextuality and studying Japanese poetry that the author follows in this article 詠 むれば 衣 手 すずし 久 方 のあまの 河 原 の 秋 の 夕 ぐれ 68 nagamureba koromode suzusi fisakata no ama no kafara no aki no yufugure 69 When I utter poems gazing [out] My sleeves are chilly. An autumn evening Of the Heavenly River In the eternal and strong sky (the A sequence, autumn no. 38) 70. It is perhaps surprising that an image of the Heavenly River, common in Japanese poetry from even before the compilation of MYS, where it is found in numerous poems, is analyzed as possibly Chinese. In fact, three major annotators of Princess Shikishi s poems Nishiki, Okuno and Oda do not analyze this poem from the perspective of Chinese intertext, and they all give numerous poetic examples by poets who were Shikishi s contemporaries, e.g. one of the compilers of SKKS, Jakuren 寂 蓮 (? 1202), or the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, Minamoto Sanetomo 源 実 朝 ( ), whose poetry teacher was Fujiwara Teika. But in many cases, one is unable to prove whose poem was composed first. Moreover, even though Nishiki gives as a reference a MYS poem X: 2319: 暮 去 者 衣 袖 寒 之 高 松 之 山 木 毎 雪 曽 零 有 ゆふさればころもでさむしたかまつのやまのきごとにゆきそふりたる 71 yufu sareba koromode samusi When evening arrives My sleeves are cold. 68 Cf.
