Hope College Spring 2011 Interim Chair Department of Psychology, Hope College Director Pedagogical Uses of Research Experiences (P.U.R.E.). A program aimed at helping faculty implement research experiences in their courses. The goal was to encourage faculty to use a scientific approach (evidence based) to their teaching. Five faculty members were funded and supervised per year. This

2 program was funded through a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant awarded to the Natural and Applied Sciences Division at Hope College Director Cultural Diversity Courses in the General Education Curriculum. In charge of supervising that courses meet goal and objectives, scheduling of courses, and creation and design of faculty development opportunities Director Classroom Undergraduate Research Experiences (C.U.R.E.) This program was a multi-year and multi-institutional assessment project funded by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant awarded to the Natural and Applied Sciences Division at Hope College. The goal was to assess students learning gains in courses that include significant research experiences as part of the course. These gains were compared to the ones obtained by students in courses without or with minimal research experiences as part of the course. Managed project, analyzed data and wrote reports. Fall 2003 Interim Chair, Department of Psychology, Hope College LEADERSHIP TRAINING August May Leadership Institute for Mid-career Women in Psychology. APA sponsored institute. One of 20 women selected nationwide as a participant. Fall 2007 October 2006 March 2004 Summer 1994 Leadership Institute. A three-day workshop on leadership in Academia & higher education. Designed and sponsored by the Great Lake College Association Reaching out: best practices in teaching diversity & international perspectives across the psychology curriculum. Sponsored by the American Psychological Association. IDEA conference changing practices in evaluating teaching Part of a four people team including Hope college s provost, a dean and two professors. Multiculturalism course design and teaching workshop. A oneweek intensive workshop organized by the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA). TEACHING FIELDS Primary: Cognitive Psychology Secondary: Psycholinguistics, Latino (a) Psychology, Multicultural Psychology, and Research Methodology.

3 COURSES TAUGHT: Psychology Advanced Research Laboratory in Cognition, Child Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Psychology Projects, Multicultural Psychology, Psychology of Language, Psychology of Latino Children (this course involves studying the development of ethnic identity in Latino Children, development of bilingualism and the effects of both of these factors on school achievement and psychological well-being), Race in America, and Research Methods in Psychology. Interdisciplinary courses Encounters with Cultures (an interdisciplinary course, -exploring ethnic and racial diversity in the United States), Faith Seeking Justice: An encounter with the poor. (Course taught off campus in Mexico), and First Year Seminar. HONORS, AWARDS, & FELLOWSHIPS Selected as one of twenty participants nationwide in the APA oneyear Leadership Institute for Mid-career Women in Psychology Board of Trustees member. Elected by the Faculty as one of two nominees to the Board of Trustees of Hope College and selected from the two nominees by the president to serve on the Board. Fall 2005 September 2004 January 2002 Carl Frost Research Center faculty fellowship. (One course load reassignment to work on the research project: Acculturation and Psychological Well Being of Latino/a Adolescents.) Award in Recognition for exemplary leadership, service and significant contributions to the Covenant Scholars at Hope College. Received the Ruth & John Reid Faculty Achievement Award Margaret Sluyter Endowment (in support of scholarly development, $9000 for three summers of research) Patricia Robert Harris Fellowship (full tuition, and stipend) SELECTIVE GRANTS 2013 Received a GLCA_NDI grant to conduct literature review and design a study on the neurocognition of dance ($2400) 2013 Received an HHMI to transform the PSY105 Intro to psychology projects course into an online course. The course was taught in May 2014 for the first time

4 HHMI grant to direct P.U.R. E. (pedagogical uses of research experiences) a faculty development program for the Natural and Applied Sciences Division (including psychology) 2006 received a grant from HHMI interdisciplinary collaborative research to work with prof. Chaponniere (of the nursing department). The project investigated the effects of acculturation on premature labor in Latinas. (Spring) 2005 Faculty Development grant for summer research, Hope College HHMI grant. Director of C.U.R.E. Summer 1996 Ford Foundation Cultural Diversity Initiative grant ($10000 to design a one week workshop on Multiculturalism Course Design and Teaching), co-leader with Associate Provost Alfredo Gonzales. SELECTIVE LIST OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS As designer and organizer Global Learning Fellows Faculty Development Program. A yearlong Faculty and staff development program co-lead with Dr. Deirdre Johnston. Program designed to develop Global Learning courses that incorporate intergroup dialogue as a pedagogical tool, and action plans for staff members to improve campus climate on campus. Program introduced over 100 faculty members and 15 staff members to intergroup dialogue as a pedagogical tool for inclusive education and community building (June) (Co-leader). Served as the sole Program Reviewer for the psychology program at Ohio Northern University in Ada, OH Instituted the use of an on-line ethics in research training program (CITI) for all researchers using human participants at Hope

7 College. The program involves a 4-5 hour on line training. I also designed several presentations to introduce the program to the Hope College faculty TALE (Teaching and Learning Encounters) An interdisciplinary faculty forum for the discussion of pedagogy. Leader and Organizer SUMMARY OF MENTORING EXPERIENCE Mentoring Faculty Mentored three faculty members in the psychology department as they begin their professional careers at Hope College. Mentoring involved discussions about teaching and scholarship, as well as family-work balance Mentored eight junior faculty members through a mentoring program at Hope College. This program pairs second year faculty members with a more senior faculty member from a different discipline. The goals of the program are to help junior faculty continue to grow in their teaching and scholarship, and to have some social/emotional support while learning to navigate the world of academia. Each mentoring relationship formally lasts two years. As part of the program I have observed colleagues teach and provided feedback; I have engaged them in conversations about course design, technology, pedagogy, assessment, and teachingscholarship balance. The colleagues I have worked with were members of the Sociology, English, Biology, and Spanish Departments. Mentoring Students Mentored Paulette Chaponniere, a nursing Ph.D. candidate conducting a dissertation of psychological and medical factors influencing premature births in Latinas. Dissertation Committee member. Dissertation completed in summer I have extensive experience supervising and mentoring students in research. I have worked with more than sixty undergraduate students in research collaborations, most of those collaborations resulted in conference presentations. Some of these collaborations resulted in

8 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Four of these projects were regional award winners at the Psi Chi Mid Western region undergraduate research award and in August 2009 a student I supervised and mentored received one of four Psi Chi National undergraduate research awards (see attached list of professional presentations).
