2 Inside Japan Processed Food Trade TRADE SUMMARY Japan is a world leader in the processed food market, with reported imports totaling US $30.5B in This represents an increase of 16% from Japan s world market share has stayed relatively stable since 2003 and stands at 4.5%. In 2008, the top suppliers to Japan were: the United States (U.S.) (19.9%), China (12.2%), Australia (10.5%), Thailand (7.7%) and France (5.8%). Japan imports a wide variety of processed food from 164 countries. Japan is Canada s second-largest export market, and attracts over 7% of Canada s processed food exports. INSIDE THIS ISSUE By the Numbers 3 Competitive Landscape 4 Market Opportunities 4 Japan s main processed food imports include: frozen pork ($2.8B), fresh pork ($1.4B), prepared chicken meat or offal ($1.3B), frozen chicken cuts and edible offal ($1.3B), and fresh beef ($1.2B). It should be noted that Japan is a significant buyer of high-end products with large profit margins. Japan is a net importer of processed food. Nevertheless, in 2008, Japanese exports of processed foods increased by $2.0B, an increase of more than 20%. Most of Japan s processed food exports came from food preparations ($298M), sauces ($199M), and bread, pastry, cakes and puddings ($146M). The top export destinations for Japanese processed food products include the U.S. (20%), Hong Kong (16%), Taiwan (14%) and South Korea (11%). CANADIAN PERFORMANCE Canada is currently Japan s seventh-largest supplier of processed food to Japan, with sales of $1.4B in 2008 (based on Japanese import data). This represents an increase of 21.9% from This increase is due to higher imports of Canadian products, such as: prepared peanuts (+762%), soybean oil (+579%), honey (+356%) rapeseed oil (+244%), and frozen beef (+131%). Japan has consistently been the second-most important destination for Canadian processed food in the past five years. Although Canadian exports to Japan have been increasing, market share remains at approximately 7%, which is second only to the U.S., who receive 72% of Canadian processed food exports. Canada s processed food exports to Japan totaled $1.4B in The top products exported were: frozen pork ($566M), fresh pork ($326M), malt ($111M), and bovine, sheep, or goat fat ($47M). Pork, chicken and beef are important components in traditional Japanese cuisine. Frozen pork is the number one import in Japan. Canada is currently the third most important supplier, but behind the U.S. and Denmark. Imports of honey are growing in Japan, and Canada exported over $4.0M worth of honey in 2008, representing 5% of the market. Canadian dog and cat food exports to Japan have the potential to grow. Canada is currently the eighth leading supplier to Japan in this $796M market. Japanese imports of prepared potatoes have increased by 14% to $346M in Canada is a main supplier but could look to chip away at the United States dominance in the market. PAGE 4
