2 IMAGES 1-7, KAROLINE RECEIVING HER AWARD AT NEW DESIGNERS AND HER WORK. 3 KAROLINE WINS NOT ON THE HIGH STREET AWARD AT NEW DESIGNERS EXHIBITION 4 From 5 start to finish the conception and execution 6 of this product is fantastic. The way the customer is pulled into the manufacturing process is delightfully less-ordinary. The product story has been thought about meticulously we love it. NOT ON THE HIGH STREET JUDGES Final year BA (Hons) Decorative Arts student Karoline Healy was presented with the award after showcasing her work at the prestigious graduate exhibition in London. Her project, called Domestic Mining, focused on sustainability by turning old plastic into watches. Karoline described it as a self-sufficient compact workshop system which enables on-the-spot personal fabrication by processing and transforming household waste plastic into wearable watches. New Designers is one of the UK s top exhibitions for emerging designers, and gives graduating students the opportunity to present their work to industry and make valuable contacts. As well as offering their own awards programme, a series of industry-supported awards are presented to the most innovative exhibitors. The Not On The High Street judges commented on Karoline s work, saying: From start to finish the conception and execution of this product is fantastic. The way the customer is pulled into the manufacturing process is delightfully less-ordinary. The product story has been thought about meticulously we love it. Not On The High Street s ideal is to hunt out the most original items from the best creative small businesses and bring them together in one place, making it easy for people to browse and buy. Karoline s award includes free membership of notonthehighstreet.com, a free photo shoot of her product, a feature in the new seller area on their homepage, an introductory blog post about Karoline and her work, and a year s mentoring with a Not On The High Street account manager. On winning the award Karoline told us: It s great that people like and recognise my work. Winning this award gives me the confidence to try out new things
3 ABIGAIL AND MARCUS GO THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Design for Film and Television students, Abigail Levers and Marcus Lester-George, have recently completed an exciting work placement on the set of Tim Burton s latest film, Alice In Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass. Filmed at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, Through the Looking Glass is the long-anticipated sequel to Burton s 2010 hit Alice in Wonderland, and is due to be released in May Abigail and Marcus are both in Year Two of our BA (Hons) Design for Film and Television degree, a course which has a strong industry focus and an emphasis on gaining practical work experience. They spent two weeks in September 2014 working on the production, as part of the Art Department. Abigail told us: I found out about the opportunity to work on this film through someone I had met on a previous work placement, which I secured through someone who had graduated from our course. As an Art Department Intern my job included model making, set dressing, making props, and running things to and from the sets. I really enjoyed getting my hands dirty in the props workshops, and I look forward to seeing some of the things I made on the big screen. I also really enjoyed model making, because the models I made were used to show the Director and the Director of Photography the set, so they could plan their camera angles from it. Abigail has also completed a placement on ITV s The Suspicions of Mr Whicher. She told us why she thought the industry experience she had gained was so important, commenting: You learn things you could never be taught in a classroom, and you meet so many incredible people that can you help you get more work experience placements, and will eventually be able to offer you jobs when you graduate.
4 STILL FROM LAZY SUSAN Dinah Berger graduated in July from our BA (Hons) Fine Art course. Shortly after completing her degree she found out she d been selected to exhibit as part of the prestigious Bloomberg New Contemporaries STILL FROM YEAH FINE ART GRADUATE SELECTED FOR BLOOMBERG NEW CONTEMPORARIES 2014 New Contemporaries is the leading UK organisation that supports emergent art practice from British Art Schools. Since 1949 New Contemporaries has provided a platform for new and recent Fine Art graduates, through an annual, nationally touring exhibition. Dinah submitted her work as part of an open call, and was selected from 1,400 submissions by a panel of influential art figures who included curators, writers and artists. She will be exhibiting two pieces of moving image work at the show, alongside 50 other artists including previous exhibitors Damien Hirst and David Hockney. Dinah told us: "Within my practice I explore ideas of watching, being watched and watching back. I m interested in using the autobiographical to talk about something wider, sociologically. When I found out I had been selected I felt extremely excited, lucky and honoured. I felt humbled by such an incredible opportunity. 5 1 2 3 THEATRE DESIGN STUDENT RACHAEL WINS NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE PRIZE IMAGES 1, 3, AND 5: RACHAEL WITH NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE'S FIONA BUFFINI AND COURSE LEADER, PATRICK CONNELLAN. 5 Before graduating from our BA (Hons) Theatre Design course in July Rachael Jacks was awarded a professional placement as part of the prize from local producing theatre, Nottingham Playhouse. The course has worked with Nottingham Playhouse for a number of years, with students creating realised models for a wide selection of productions. This year s task was to create a set design for the play Touched written by Nottingham s Stephen Lowe, which premiered at Nottingham Playhouse in Final year students on the course were asked to take into consideration a variety of locations, costume changes and the time period of the production, Rachael told us: As part of my research for Touched I spent time with my great grandmother who lived through both World Wars, and is from Nottingham, where the play is set. Her descriptions of washing hanging in the street prompted my research. Through experimenting I discovered that the washing lines solved multiple scene changes and could be used to show projections on them too. Rachael received her prize from Nottingham Playhouse s Associate Director, Fiona Buffini, who commented: Rachael s work was outstanding, and we very much look forward to welcoming her to the Playhouse to work with our Creative Director Giles Croft, on a forthcoming production of Forever Young. Rachael will be begin her work placement at Nottingham Playhouse at the start of 2015, and will also be involved in a community-based project. Rachael said: When I received my prize I was quite overwhelmed! I m really looking forward to working with Nottingham Playhouse and seeing where that might take me. Rachael s work was outstanding, and we very much look forward to welcoming her to the Playhouse to work with our Creative Director Giles Croft, on a forthcoming production of Forever Young. 6 IN CONVERSATION WITH TRUDI NEWGARTH BA (HONS) COSTUME DESIGN AND MAKING, YEAR TWO WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR COURSE? I love how you can do both designing and making throughout all three years, unlike the other courses I looked at. The tutors are brilliant to chat to about your work, they can relate to your problems and are more than happy to schedule a meeting if you need one. The technicians are great at helping you with any issues, and advising you on the best way to do things. IMAGES: ABOVE; TRUDI NEWGARTH LEFT; CLARA GORMENHGAST ILLUSTRATION BY TRUDI WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY YOUR DEGREE AT NTU? I came to two open days and fell in love with NTU the course was perfect for me. The University had so many sports and societies, and there s something for everyone. Nottingham is a brilliant student city and it just felt like the right place and course for me. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING AND STUDYING IN NOTTINGHAM? Nottingham is a great student city and has everything you could need. I ve joined a society too, so I have a separate group of friends and really great balance between my course and my social life. WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND YOUR COURSE? I would recommend this course 100% to anyone interested in costume design and making, because you have the chance to do design and making all the way through your studies. You also get to learn lots of different skills, from pattern drafting and costume construction, to designing for two days to three week projects. You also get a solid grounding in costume history and the opportunity to develop life drawing and Photoshop skills.
