1 Embedding Math Practices Using Study Team Strategies in Daily Lessons Presenter: Bonnie Walczak Parkview Middle School Ashwaubenon, WI
2 Throughout this hour, we will Talk about the importance of students working in teams. Put ourselves in the role of a student in order to see how Study Team Strategies involve everyone in a team. Relate a few of the Math Practices to a few Study Team Strategies.
3 Give-One, Get-One Please take out a sheet of paper (I have a stack up front if you need one) Fold the paper into four equal sections. Label each of those sections as you see to the right. In each section, without talking, please write some ideas that you have about each topic. You have 5 minutes. Ice Breaker Activities Favorite Vacation Spots Grouping Ideas Good Reads
4 When the music starts, you walk around When the music stops: Pair up with the person closest to you and share your ideas for each category. When the music starts again: Repeat
5 HOW COULD YOU USE GIVE-ONE, GET-ONE IN A MATH CLASSROOM?

7 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Mathematical Practices Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
8 Math Practice 1 Study Team Strategy: Traveling Salesman
9 Traveling Salesman: The team solves the problem together and makes sure everyone can explain the solution. The students number off and the teacher picks a number from each group to rotate to all other groups to share their team s solution. The groups listen to the different solutions and vote for the best solution at the end. As a team, come up with a solution to the logic problem I will be passing out. Please number off 1-4.

12 Silent Debate: Students work in pairs: one is pro the other is con A topic is given, the pro goes first making a supportive statement in writing The con reads the statement and then writes a comment against the topic. The process repeats 3-4 times. No talking, just writing Work with the person next to you the topic is: 0.9 equals 1

19 Fortune Cookie Choose 5-6 questions and put in an envelope Each team receives an envelope One person draws a question, and makes one statement about the topic, then passes it on The next person adds their own statement or responds to the previous statement When everyone has responded to the first statement, another person draws from the envelope and repeats the process.
20 Study Team Strategies are intended to be used in daily lessons in order to involve every student in their education. The Standards for Mathematical Practice and Study Team Strategies work well together to prepare your students for future success. As teachers, we need to make sure our students can persevere through problems and use appropriate tools strategically check out this video and think about which character represents you as a teacher and which one is the student.
