3 FORENSIC DETECTIVE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS Materials needed: - Forensic Detective Activity Sheet - Fingerprint Pattern Types - Forensic Detective Rubric - Ink Pads - Hand Sanitizer - Baby Wipes - 5 x 7 Index Cards TEKS: (c)(1)(A), (2)(A)(B)(E) Approximate time: 20 minutes Directions: 1. Assign students into groups of two 2. 4 FORENSIC DETECTIVE ACTIVITY SCENARIO Someone who is sitting in this classroom broke into the Principal s office this morning and stole his favorite writing pen! The crime was caught on video, so the administration thinks that they know who did it. However, they want to be absolutely positive that they have the correct person in mind. Luckily, evidence was gathered from the scene, including fingerprints. Through the use of forensic techniques, your group must work together and determine who committed this evil crime before the end of the class period. Instructions: To complete this activity, each group must collect the fingerprints of each group member, and post the prints collectively on a poster board. Label all prints with numbers and letters, NOT names (Ex: Group 1, Suspect A). Directions for gathering the prints are below. Upon completion we will compare all gathered prints to the evidence that has already been collected. HOW TO GATHER FINGER PRINT Step 1 Begin by telling the subject that you are going to take their prints and to relax their hand and let you do all the work; ask them to let you control their hands Step 2 Roll the fingers, one-by-one, from the left to the right on the ink pad (without pressing down) Your prints should be wide and not resemble typical finger sizes Step 3 For inking the fingertips, roll them from the top down until the fingers lay flat Do the left and then the right Roll the thumbs, and label them T Clean Up When getting ink off the fingers, make sure the soap is rubbed in well before applying water Make sure that your collected prints are away from cleaning material to prevent damage Label your print sheets and post them Be sure to write the correct detective s name on each sheet posted. 5 FINGERPRINT PATTERN TYPES Fingerprint Identification is the method of identification using the impressions made by the minute ridge formations or patterns found on the fingertips. No two persons have exactly the same arrangement of ridge patterns, and the patterns of any one individual remain unchanged throughout life. Fingerprints offer a perfect means of personal identification. Other personal characteristics may change, but fingerprints do not. Fingerprints can be recorded on a standard fingerprint card or can be recorded digitally and transmitted electronically to the FBI for comparison. By comparing fingerprints at the scene of a crime with the fingerprint record of suspected persons, officials can establish absolute proof of the presence or identity of a person. Various types are below. Prepare three or four short movie clips (15 to 30 seconds in length) that show a character or scene portraying an occupation related to the cluster currently being taught 2. Give each student a copy of the Movie Clips Questions 3. Explain and give examples for the two questions on the Movie Clips Questions 4. Show the clips 5. 9 CRIME SCENE SCENERIO You are dispatched to an ATM machine in order to take an aggravated robbery report. The victim, Tony Unlucky, was robbed at gunpoint by two suspects while he was in his car at the ATM machine. The robbers took Mr. Unlucky s personal belongings, dropped a weapon, and then took his car. There were two witnesses. Write a Crime Report using the attached form.
