2 Course Description: Career Math is a textbook free project oriented course in which students will be given the opportunity to explore the mathematics necessary for various careers. This course will focus less on the abstract mathematical theory that is typically found in high school math and more on the principles needed for practical application in the labor market. Career Math contains a series of diverse projects which will require students to research and gain a deeper understanding of the mathematics necessary in the 21 st century workplace. All projects will conclude with a student presentation in which the necessary mathematics will be described and explained. The course itself will focus on the PA Core Mathematical Practice Standards as they are encountered throughout the required projects.
3 Mathematical Practice Standards Mathematical Practice Standards describes the habits of mind required to reach a level of mathematical proficiency. Standards for Mathematical Practice Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and make sense of regularity in repeated reasoning.
4 Subject Career Math Project Title: Creating a Tutoring Business Grade levels: 11,12 Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods The first project will serve as a template for students to complete all future projects. In this project, students will be setting up a tutoring business. Students will be researching the cost of both opening and operating a tutoring business. Students will synthesize their research to determine the totals and then present their findings to the class. Project Description A new SAT tutoring business will be opened. The tutoring business will be in an open retail space that includes handicap accessibility. Upon entering there will be a reception area. The remainder of the open space will be partitioned off by rolling whiteboards. The business model includes students taking a sample assessment on a computer and the computer generating a report on the results. Students would then work with a teacher individually or in a small group to address areas that need improvement. The business will have 5 total employees including the owner and will tutor a maximum of 15 students at any one time. Essential Questions How much money will it take to open the doors of a tutoring business? Concepts Students will know The cost associated with purchasing office furniture computers printers copy machines internet access telephone service utilities office supplies The cost associated with renting office/retail space. The monthly operating expenses needed to keep the business open for one year. Competencies Students will be able to Research the cost of various supplies and services. Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. Explain total cost by presenting their findings to other students. Justify their process by making valid arguments.

6 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Creating a Personalized Business Grade levels: 11, 12 Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods The second project is an opportunity for students to apply the process from Project 1 and extend it to a business or career field of their choice. This project will begin to introduce students to some of the mathematics necessary to the chosen career field. Project Description Students will select a business in a career field that they choose. They will then research all necessary aspects of opening the doors of the business and document the cost involved. They will describe their business of choice and provide the necessary details by following process used in Project 1. Essential Questions What costs are associated with opening a business in a desired career field? Concepts Students will know The cost associated with purchasing the materials that are necessary to begin their business. The cost associated with renting office/retail space. The monthly operating expenses needed to keep the business open for one year. Competencies Students will be able to Research the cost of various supplies and services. Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. Explain total cost by presenting their findings to other students. Justify their process by making valid arguments.

8 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Financing a Business Grade levels: 11, 12 Mifflin County School District Mathematics Department Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods Opening a business can require a great deal of capital. Students will investigate the process and cost of obtaining financing in the business of their choice. Project Description The prior project required students to research the cost of opening their business. It is now time to find financing for the business. Students will research various types of business loans and the current interest rate associated with the loan. As the loan is researched, students will be required to investigate the payoff time required, the implications of different interest rates, and the total amount paid to the lender over the period of the loan. Essential Questions How does the monthly payment on a loan impact the expenses? What types of loans are available? How does the interest rate impact the monthly payment as well as the total amount repaid to the lender? When is the best time to make extra payments on a loan? Concepts Students will know The different types of loans available for a small business. The impact of interest rate on payment amounts. Competencies Students will be able to Calculate the amount of money repaid to a lender when given an interest rate and a time. Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. Explain total cost by presenting their findings to other students. Justify their process by making valid arguments.

10 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Marketing Grade levels: 11,12 Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods In any business, marketing is necessary in order to gain customers. In today s marketplace there are a variety of ways to advertise and market a business to customers. Project Description Students will be in charge of a marketing campaign for their business. Students must investigate the variety of ways to market a business. Each different way of marketing the business will have a different cost associated with it. Students must research the cost of the various marketing methods and select the best approach for their business. Essential Questions What are the different ways of marketing a business? What costs are associated with various marketing methods? What type of return could be expected by a marketing campaign? Concepts Students will know Marketing strategies that are used by small business. The cost of at least five methods of marketing. Competencies Students will be able to Describe the various marketing methods available to businesses. Calculate the overall cost of a marketing campaign. Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. Explain total cost by presenting their findings to other students. Justify their process by making valid arguments.

12 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Bidding a Job Grade levels: 11, 12 Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 20 class periods Mathematics will be involved in every job. Students will bid a job in their particular career field and research the mathematics involved in its completion. This project will be completed twice during the school year. Project Description Students will select a job or task that is part of their career field and then research the mathematics involved in completion of the job. As they compile the data on the necessary mathematics they will also research to cost involved and report back on both aspects during the final phase of this project. Essential Questions What mathematics are required to complete the specified job or task? What costs are associated with the specified job? Concepts Students will know How to use mathematical operations that pertain to their career. The cost associated with performing a particular job. The appropriate bid do place for a job. Competencies Students will be able to Describe the mathematics used in a specified job or task in the given career field. Complete the necessary calculations required in the selected task Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. 14 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Payroll and Taxes Grade levels: 11, 12 Mifflin County School District Mathematics Department Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods Many businesses hire employees. The business is responsible for paying the employee and paying the proper portion of the required taxes. Project Description Students will consider a situation where they will have a small number of employees. They will need to manage their payroll to meet federal, state, and local requirements. In this project students will research payroll requirements and the steps a business owner must take to meet those requirements. Additionally, students will look at any benefits offered by the business and summarize those costs to create a clear picture of the cost of employing people and the impact on the bottom line of a business. Essential Questions What payroll taxes are businesses required to pay? What is the overall cost of having employees? Concepts Students will know The cost of doing business once employees are added. The federal requirements for payroll. How to complete a simple payroll spreadsheet. Competencies Students will be able to Summarize the necessary components of making a payroll. Complete the necessary calculations required for payroll Construct a table or a spreadsheet to synthesize and summarize data. Create a PowerPoint presentation. Explain total cost by presenting their findings to other students. Justify their process by making valid arguments.

16 Subject: Career Math Project Title: Record Keeping Grade levels: 11, 12 Mifflin County School District Mathematics Department Rational/Summary of Project Approximate Time Frame: 18 class periods Running a balance sheet is a key component of any business. The balance sheet summarizes all of the assets and liabilities at any given time to give insight into the financial condition of the business. Project Details In this project students will research the key components of a balance sheet. Using information from prior projects students will create a balance sheet and complete the proper mathematical operations to create a sample balance sheet for a business of their choice. Essential Questions What are the key components of a balance sheet? How do you determine the financial health of a company? Concepts Students will know Balance sheets are critical to any business. The financial health of a company can be determined from a balance sheet. Well-kept balance sheets are necessary to gain financing for expansion or future projects. Competencies Students will be able to Name the key components of a balance sheet. Fill out a simple balance sheet. Determine assets, liabilities, and net worth. Construct a spreadsheet. Make valid conclusions about the financial health of a business based on a balance sheet. Create a PowerPoint presentation.
