2 *Lake Metroparks Farmpark is closed Mondays Come to the parks or we ll come to you! Lake Metroparks offers a wide variety of programs designed to meet scout recognition requirements for girls and boys of all ages. Hands-on learning adventures focus on animals, arts/science, nature and outdoor skills. All programs are led by professional staff and most are available year-round. Many programs can be brought to a park close to you or be adapted for your meeting place. Each program is designed to fulfill badge requirements for a particular scouting level. However, many programs can be adapted to other levels. Fees & Scheduling Please schedule at least two weeks in advance; call between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm weekdays. Be prepared with first and second choice of dates and times and have the Registration Checklist information ready when you call. Spring and fall dates fill well in advance! Per person program fees are listed in program descriptions. There is a minimum charge for ten participants regardless of group size. Programs that require the presenter to travel outside of Lake County are charged an additional transportation fee. Groups with special needs are welcome. Facilities and trails are wheelchair accessible. 4 Girl Scout programs To register for these programs, call Daisies Daisies Being Responsible & Caring Petals: Zinni & Mari Girls will learn that they are making an impact on the Earth by what they say and do. They will learn how to be considerate and caring to the world through their actions. Daisies to the Rescue Petals: Clover & Rosie Girls will learn about recycling and reusing materials. They will also learn about local wildlife and how to help them. Journey: Between Earth & Sky The girls will discover how unique Earth is and why this is important. Activities are meant to teach them to identify with the natural world. Journey: Daisy Flower Garden Design your own mini garden and go on a scavenger hunt for seeds. Discover the world of bees, lady bugs and worms, and how they can be beneficial for your garden. Brownies Brownie Hiker Hiking is a wonderful way to see the beauty of nature and spend time with your fellow girl scouts. Learn how to plan a hike, prepare hiking snacks and learn some of the plants and animals you may see while hiking around the region. Brownie Inventor Inventors are like the movie stars of science. Learn how to think, plan and create like an inventor. Put your thinking cap on and get ready to find new uses for everyday items and learn how to make your own invention. Bugs for Brownies 2-hour session $8 Spring, Summer, Fall Take a closer look into the world of bugs: how they look, where you can find them, and why some bugs aren t really bugs at all. They are a lot cooler than you think! Home Scientist Science is everywhere. Girls will learn where science has been hiding in their homes and surrounding environment through hands-on experiments. Journey: 5 Flowers, 4 Stories & 3 Cheers for Animals The girls will earn their journey while learning to care for animals and themselves. They get to be creative and build their confidence while learning how to care for animals. 4

5 Journey: Wonder of Water 3-hour session $12 All seasons Water gives you so many ways to get wet and have fun. The girls will begin by exploring water drop by drop, and join their friends to see how they have a larger effect on saving water when they come together. They will conclude the program by reaching out and sharing their knowledge. Painting for Brownies Artists take what they see and make it beautiful. Learn to paint and color your world in super strokes. Senses for Brownies You have five senses that work together to let you see, hear, feel, taste and touch the world around you. You will use all five senses to earn this badge. Juniors Animal Habitats Discover more about wild animals and their habitats. Learn how to help protect them and keep their habitats healthy. Drawing for Juniors When you pick up your pencil, anything could leap from your mind onto a sheet of paper. That s what makes drawing so much fun. Learn techniques to make drawing even more fun when using your imagination. Geocacher 2.5-hour session $10 All seasons Learn how to geocache using a GPS, make a trade item for your cache and go on an outdoor adventure. Junior Detective Detectives have important and exciting jobs. Learn to be a Junior Detective by following clues and discovering facts that will help you to solve a real mystery. 5

Discover three medicinal flowers and how they help people. Make a flower necklace to take home. Junior Gardener 2-hour session $8 Spring & Summer Take a garden tour at the Plant Science Center and make a mini garden. Encounter six plants that are grown locally and create a seed experiment. Cadette/senior Badge Price Length Game Visionary $12 3 hours Night Owl $12 3 hours Sky $12 3 hours Trees $ hours See page 10 for Scout Experience programs Junior Journey: Get Moving! 3.5-hour session $14 All seasons Investigate the energy in and around you. Girls will learn about how energy works, how they use energy and then develop a plan to reduce energy usage. Girls will earn the Energize and Investigate awards. After implementing their plan, they will earn the Innovate award. 6

7 Boy Scout programs To register for these programs, call Tigers Bovines & Equines Tigers will visit a real dairy and get to milk a cow. They will groom a horse and learn about what it takes to care for one. Covers Electives 31 and 44. Feed the Birds Explore the local parks looking for birds. Find a specific bird to learn about and learn how to make your own birdfeeder. Covers Elective 32. Learn About Animals Animals look, move and communicate in many different ways. Come explore how animals live by observing our critters! Take a hike to learn about where different animals can be found and test your knowledge with our animal scavenger hunt! Covers Elective 31. Let s Go Outdoors Achievement We will have fun exploring nature while looking at trees, plants, animals and weather. Boys will start on their journey to appreciating the outdoors. Plant a Seed Tigers will discover the world of plants and learn how seeds grow. They will learn about bees and take a tour of our hydroponics greenhouse. They will also plant seeds to take home and watch grow. Covers Elective 30. Wolves Birds Become a bird explore migration, bird songs and calls. Hike to search for signs of birds in the forest and field! Then make a birdfeeder to take home. Covers Elective 13. Fishing 1.5-hour session $6 Spring, Summer, Fall Bait your hook, cast your line and let s go fishing! Scouts practice skills using the catch and release method. Equipment and bait provided. Covers Elective 19. Grow Something 2-hour session $8 Spring & Summer Explore the Plant Science Center and take a tour of our gardens and hydroponics greenhouse. Plant some seeds to create a mini garden. Covers Elective 15, Part C, D and E. Machine Power 2-hour session $8 Spring, Summer & Fall Wolves will explore different types of machinery on the farm. They will explore horsepower and discover the uses of a wheel and axle. Covers Elective 8, Part A and C. Weather Scouts will learn to read a thermometer, build a weather vane, make a rain gauge, learn how a barometer works and learn to identify three different cloud types. Covers Elective 2. 7

8 Boy Scout programs To register for these programs, call Bears American Indian Life Discover what American Indian tribe has lived where you live now, play two Native American games and uncover how the tribes lived. This program covers Elective 24, A and B. Animals on the Farm Discover life on a farm milk a cow; learn about sheep, chickens, rabbits, horses and pigs. This program covers Elective 16, Part B. Geology Belt Loop & Pin 2-hour session $8 Spring, Summer & Fall Cub scouts will earn their Geologist Belt Loop and Pin through experimentation and by exploring the local geologic wonders of Chapin Forest Reservation! Map & Compass Academic Belt Loop & Pin Learn to find your way using a protractor compass! Learn how to begin in this popular sport with hands-on practice and games! This is great experience for any Scout group wanting to learn beginning orienteering! Sharing Your World with Wildlife Achievement 1-hour session $4 All seasons Learn about extirpated, endangered and extinct animals and native wildlife while enjoying the company of live birds of prey. 8 Tying it All Up Examine the art of knot tying and practice these skills. Test your skills hitting a target. Discover how to make cordage. This program covers Achievement 22, Part A, B, C and D. Water & Soil Conservation Take a walk on the wild side and into an unknown world! Discover the natural ecosystems that are often forgotten and search for ways to protect these precious areas. Covers Elective 15. Webelos Astronomy Academic Belt Loop & Pin Spend an evening under the stars. Join a naturalist for star watching, stories, StarLab exploration and a night hike! All cub scout levels can earn the Astronomy Academic Belt Loop and Pin. Forester Activity Badge Scouts will become a tree, learn about forest layers and learn about trees inside and out. We will hike and identify trees and other plants in the forest. Geologist Activity Badge & Geology Belt Loop & Pin 2-hour session $8 Spring, Summer & Fall Cub scouts will be able to earn their Geologist Belt Loop and Pin and Badge through experimentation and by exploring the local geologic wonders of Chapin Forest Reservation!

9 Naturalist Activity Badge Scouts will become a naturalist for a day. We will learn about birds and migration and about poisonous plants and animals in the area. We will hike outdoors and learn about different habitats. Map & Compass Academic Belt Loop & Pin Learn to find your way using a protractor compass! Learn how to begin in this popular sport with hands-on practice and games! This is a great experience for any Scout group wanting to learn beginning orienteering! Weather Belt Loop & Pin What makes weather? How do we measure it? Be a meteorologist for a day! Learn to identify cloud types and to use a weather station! You may not be able to change the weather, but you can learn to predict it! All Cub Scout levels Art Academic Belt Loop & Pin Join us in the great indoors and outdoors to explore the world of art with nature as your guide. Astronomy Academic Belt Loop & Pin Spend an evening under the stars. Join a naturalist for star watching, stories, StarLab exploration and a night hike! Let s experiment with all sorts of fun things and learn more about science in your life. Come and see science in action. World Conservation Belt Loop & Pin Scouts will complete all requirements for the World Conservation Belt Loop and Pin. They will learn about the natural resources around them and understand why it is important to protect and conserve them. Eagle Scout Projects Complete your Eagle Scout project with Lake Metroparks. Crops & Critters Get the farm experience, learn where food comes from and meet farm animals up close. Eco-Explorer for Brownies Eco is short for ecology. Ecology is the study of how plants and animals live together in the environment. Have fun trying many different activities as you become an eco-explorer. Frosty Fun Experience 2-hour session $8 Winter Learn the basics of winter recreation activities including cross country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. Gone Fishin 1.5-hour session $6 Spring, Summer & Fall Bait your hook, cast your line and let s go fishing! Scouts practice skills using the catch and release method. Equipment and bait provided. 10

Soaring Silhouettes 1-hour session $4 All seasons Meet a live hawk, falcon, owl and another animal for an in-depth look at their natural histories. Learn about adaptations and predator/prey relationships, endangered species and much more! Star Search Spend an evening under the stars. Join a naturalist for star watching, stories, StarLab exploration and a night hike! Walk About Wildlife 1-hour session $4 All seasons Observe a variety of animals and learn how wildlife is rehabilitated as you tour the wildlife yard. Meet a permanent resident up-close. Learn about human impact on wildlife and what you can do. Water Fun Experience 1.5-hour session $6 Summer Learn to be safe in and on the water while having fun. Weatherwatcher Brownies and Juniors be a meteorologist for a day! Learn to identify cloud types and to use a weather station! Volunteer Service Help Lake Metroparks while earning credit for your service or conservation badges. Scouts can assist the parks with hands-on projects in the outdoors.
