SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT and UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT SCHOOL YEAR 2015/16 SCHOOL NUMBER North Canoe s Mission Statement: The purpose of North Canoe School is to enable all learners to develop their individual potential and acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy and caring society. SCHOOL PROFILE / UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS (including staffing and special education assignments) Data (projected for 2015) as of May 21, 2015: General Enrollment Kindergarten 14 Grade 1 12 Grade 2 10 Grade 3 10 Grade 4 13 Grade 5 11 TOTAL 70 Enrollment Detail Female = 27 Male = 43 First Nations Students = 13 students Special Needs: Category K, Q, R = 2 students Category C-G = 5 students Category H = 0 students The community of Canoe is located east of downtown Salmon Arm via the Trans Canada Highway. North Canoe Elementary has served the rural population of the north-eastern section of the District of Salmon Arm since The present day location of the school was established in Students of North Canoe Elementary live in a variety of different settings ranging from rural country living to subdivisions and modular homes. Most students live within walking distance from the school. Canoe is largely self contained, having a general store, plywood plant, card lock service station, hall church, post office, motels, senior centre, golf course, campground, go carts, public beach, marina, ball diamonds and Elks Hall. The cost of living in Canoe makes it an attractive place to live for seniors, young families starting out and single parent families. Our current Parent Advisory Council has developed a strong partnership with the school. We are very fortunate to have their financial support for curricular and extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are offered to our students in addition to the regular curriculum. We have a winter recreation program that involves every student at the school. Students are provided the opportunity to learn skating, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Having winter recreational equipment purchased for the school allows students to be active, learn new skills and increase student and parent participation in activities. We encourage families to borrow the equipment to promote active family outings together. We have swimming lessons provided to all students in kindergarten to grade 3 and gymnastic & dance lessons for all students. These events are supported by our dedicated PAC group. We have a One to One reading program for our students providing opportunities for our students to read with parent volunteers. Also, we have a dedicated group of grade 4 and 5 students who make up our PROPS team; a leadership group promoting active play and organizing activities for all students. Staffing: There are 3 divisions with 4 classroom teachers, 1 librarian (0.1), 1 music teacher (0.2), 1 Learning Resource Teachers (0.3), 4 Certified Education Assistants, 2 lunch hour supervisors, secretary and custodian. We also have a First Nations Worker, Speech and Language Pathologist, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist, and district counselor who are in the school on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. As well, a district physiotherapist and occupational therapist are in the school when needed. Specific programs supporting our school goals this year: One to One Reading Program, Accelerated Reader, PALS, and Student Leadership (PROPS). North Canoe combines the practices of Restitution with Effective Behaviour Support strategies (EBS), as well as, the Social Responsibility Performance Standards. North Canoe believes in RESPECT: Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Respect Property and Respect for the Learning Environment. For the start of September, our school will be the new site for the alternate program (K-5). SD #83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap) Annual School Growth Plan Page 1
