5 Cardiac Surgeons Appointments - Call (773) Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD jeevan@uchicago.edu High risk reoperative cardiac surgery, Heart transplantation, Minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Valvular heart diseases, Ventricular assist devices (LVADs), Bloodless/ transfusionfree cardiac surgery Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam specializes in the surgical management of heart failure, and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 heart transplants and countless cardiac surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Dr. Jeevanandam has a special interest in treating patients traditionally considered inoperable. He has repaired damaged hearts in several patients awaiting transplant, enabling those patients to forgo transplantation. He also has successfully performed transplants involving patients who do not fit the standard criteria for transplant. Additionally, Dr. Jeevanandam has received national attention for his skill in performing bloodless cardiac surgery, which requires the use of precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss during the procedure--sparing the need for a blood transfusion. He specializes in adult cardiac surgery with emphasis in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. An active researcher, Dr. Akhter studies molecular mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and how they lead to heart failure, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies to prevent this disease process. His laboratory also investigates methods to improve protection of the heart during cardiac surgery and basic mechanisms of donor heart dysfunction. Dr. Akhter s clinical research projects focus on recovery of heart function after ventricular assist device implantation and outcomes following mechanical circulatory support. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education. 6 Cardiac Surgeons Appointments - Call (773) Jai Raman, MD, M Med, PhD jraman@surgery.bsd.uchicago.edu Arterial grafting, Beating-heart surgery, Minimally invasive heart surgery, Heart and Multiorgan transplantation, Heart valve preservation Dr. Jai Raman is a highly skilled cardiac and thoracic surgeon known for his efforts to develop innovative surgical procedures, especially for heart failure treatment. He helped develop ventricular containment (wrap procedure), which uses a unique mesh bag to stop the heart from enlarging in patients with heart failure. He performed the first eight of these procedures in the world. Dr. Raman also helped develop Basal Annuloplasty of the Cardia Externally (BACE)--a new off-pump device for the treatment of leaky mitral valves. Dr. Raman has expertise in minimally invasive bypass surgery performed without splitting the sternum. He has also worked closely with cardiologists and industry to improve ablative treatment methods and to promote the use of biventricular pacing for the treatment of heart failure. His work to develop new techniques to repair mitral and tricuspid valves and adapt minimal access techniques has been particularly successful. These procedures have spared many patients from requiring full sternotomy or heart valve replacement. He has participated in more than 300 successful organ transplants and has a special interest in offering the benefits of transplant to patients previously considered too high-risk for transplantation. Dr. Russo focuses on complex and reoperative aortic surgery. He uses leading-edge strategies, such as minimally invasive endovascular and hybrid approaches, stentless valves, biologic composite grafts, valvesparing aortic roots, and advanced cardiopulmonary perfusion techniques, to minimize risks of cardiothoracic surgery. An active researcher, he has co-authored more than 50 journal articles and textbook chapters. Dr. Russo has received numerous research awards from professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, European Society of Cardiology, and American Heart Association. His areas of interest include strategies to maximize the benefits of transplantation, the evaluation of rapidly evolving device technologies for treating cardiac disease, and approaches to improve neurocognitive outcomes among cardiac surgery patients. He is experienced in all techniques of lung and esophageal resection, and is skilled in surgical methods to relieve airway obstruction and malignant pleural effusions. He has served on the boards and committees of numerous national societies and institutions including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is a world-renowned cardiac surgeon with a particular expertise in providing leading edge treatments for the most complicated pediatric cardiac cases. Dr. Ziemer has performed over 4,000 procedures for Pediatric and Congenital heart disease. Dr. Ziemer was the first in the world to successfully perform a neonatal autograft aortic valve replacement in June 1989, and currently performs the surgery on patients of all ages. In 1991 Dr. Ziemer established the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association.
