EUROPE S LEADING CANCER EXPERTISE Helsinki University Hospital hosts the largest and most versatile cancer treatment center in Finland, providing personalized, high-quality cancer treatment. It is a center of excellence that combines the expertise of several specialities. Awarded operations The Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) has audited all cancer therapies provided by the Helsinki University Hospital and accredited it as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition to our center, there is only one other university hospital in Europe that has received the same acknowledgement. Thanks to the Cancer Center s active, high-quality long-term research and international networks, its treatment outcomes are among the best in the world. Such results would not be possible without the competent, experienced and highly motivated personnel of the center. Petri Bono, Director of Helsinki University Hospital Cancer Center 4

SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH FORMS THE BASIS FOR TOP RESULTS The key objective of our research is to enable faster and more efficient use of research results for the patients benefit. The power of modern cancer research results in higher survival rates in several types of cancer. New and improved methods are constantly developed for early cancer detection, cancer surgery, radiation therapy and molecular diagnostics of cancer. The Cancer Center and the scientists of the Academic Medical Center Helsinki offer the best operating environment for advanced research and treatment. As Finland s largest oncology unit, the center cooperates with several of the world s top hospitals and international research organizations to further enhance the methods and overall treatment of cancer patiens. 5

STATE-OF-THE-ART CANCER CARE FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS Services in pediatric hematology and oncology as well as stem cell transplantation are provided at the Hospital for Children and Adolescents. The clinic provides patient- and family-oriented care. In Finland, the prognosis of children s recovery of cancer illnesses is among the best in Europe: more than 80 % recover. The prognosis of the most common malignant illness in children, leukemia, has improved spectacularly during the last decades and some subtypes of leukemia have a survival rate above 90 %. More than 80 % recover In Finland, the prognosis of children is among the best in Europe. 8

ROBOTIC ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER SURGERY Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The treatment is determined case-specifically with multidisciplinary uro-oncologic teamwork and the methods include active surveillance, surgery or radiotherapy in local disease and hormonal treatment or chemotherapy in metastasized disease. At the Helsinki University Hospital, the vast majority more than 90 % of the radical prostatectomies are performed with RoboticAssisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) surgical technique with excellent results. Helsinki University Hospital is one of the biggest robotic prostatectomy centers in Northern Europe with more than 320 RALP operation per year and over operations since Due to robotic use, the surgery is done with precision, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain, and quicker healing time. 9

LEADING-EDGE HEAD AND NECK CANCER TREATMENT Helsinki University Hospital has a well-established group of surgeons and oncologists specialized in the diagnosis, treatment and management of head and neck cancer patients. Each year more than 200 new patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer in the oral cavity, various sites of pharynx, sinonasal area, skull base and larynx are treated according to individual patient needs. Our state-of-the-art care is based on the national guidelines for the management of head and neck cancer in Finland and typically requires multi-modality therapy including surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. The surgical team consists of members from the Departments of Otolaryngology head and neck surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery. As one of the largest head and neck reconstructive centers in Europe, on average 140 microvascular head and neck free flap reconstructions are performed annually at this center. We also offer the modern surgical treatment modalities e.g. computerized reconstruction treatment planning, endoscopic and minimally invasive approaches as well as robotic surgery. Our ongoing research programs involving scientists and physicians are active both in the areas of clinical and translational research aspects. GLOBALLY KNOWN LUNG CANCER EXPERTISE Helsinki University Hospital Heart and Lung center is the leading national clinic in the field of thoracic-surgery. The good treatment results are based on long experience and broad spectrum as well as number of demanding thoracic patients. More than 1,000 thoracic surgeries and almost the same amount of endoscopic procedures are produced every year. The center acts as an international training center cooperating with several European university hospitals. The lugn cancer is usually diagnosed by X-ray and the most common therapies include chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and the combinations of these. The stage of the cancer and the different treatment options are evaluated by a multidisciplinary expert team including oncologists, pulmonary specialists, radiologists, pathologists and thoracic surgeons. In addition to traditional surgical methods the clinic uses the latest diagnostic and therapeutic methods including endoscopic and robot-assisted surgery. In many cases removal of the very uncommon mediastinal tumors is possible using a robotassisted technique. If necessary, we can use a heart-lung machine to allow extirpation of cancers that have infiltrated major mediastinal vessels, e.g. in cases of thymus cancer. Our center is one of the most experienced clinics of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for esophageal and lung cancer in the Nordic countries. We have developed the radical surgery of pleural mesothelioma by adding heated cytotoxic drug lavage of the thoracic cavity. 10

WORLD FAMOUS BRAIN CANCER TREATMENT Brain tumors are tumors originating from brain tissue or the surrounding intracranial or spinal structures. It is also possible for other cancers (e.g. lung, breast, skin and bowel cancers) to metastasize to the brain. Brain cancers are treated by surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy as an adjuvant therapy. The prognosis of patients depends on the disease and its severity. The development of radiotherapy has had clear effects on the treatment of brain tumors, in which precise planning of the therapy is of great benefit. World-renowned center of excellence Surgical patients are treated in Helsinki University Hospital Department of Neurosugery at Töölö Hospital. The Department is world-famous for its expertise in all subsections of neurosurgery and is considered the leading center in Europe in the microneurosurgical treatment of cerebral blood vessel diseases and complex brain tumors. WE PROVIDE SERVICES ALSO IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Melanoma and Sarcoma Diagnostics, surgery, oncological treatment, ILP (Isolated Limb Perfusion with Breast cancer Diagnostics, surgery, oncological treatment, breast reconstruction (immediate or later stage) Gynecological cancer Diagnostics, surgery, oncological treatment Gastrointestinal cancer (esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum) Diagnostics, surgery, oncological treatment a cytotoxic drug) 11
