1 NVQ LEVEL 2 SPRA SPECIALIST UP-SKILLING PROGRAMME (SUP) FOR SINGLE PLY ROOFING
2 INTRODUCTION The purpose of a SUP is to fill any gaps in skills or knowledge so that an individual is then capable of gaining a nationally recognised qualification. The main difference between this and other schemes is that the training is tailored to the individual rather than a group and can be used to overcome the skills and knowledge shortage needed to achieve an NVQ diploma in Single Ply Roofing. Going forward, SUP s are seen by SPRA as an essential choice to sit alongside more established routes to qualification (OSAT, SAP), as the requirement to prove competence in the workplace increases. Course duration and programming The SUP runs for 12 months from first registration and within that time, all training sessions must be completed and the qualification achieved. The minimum number of training days must be no less than five and no more than thirteen to suit the needs of the learner/employer. SPRA will ensure that the minimum content as detailed in the training specification, are covered before any further training takes place. 3 UP-SKILLING PROGRAMME (SUP) FOR SINGLE PLY ROOFING NVQ LEVEL 2 Training Provider Criteria As with the Single Ply Roofing SAP, SPRA works alongside the National Specialist Accredited Centre (NSAC) to deliver the SUP. This ensures that both the training and assessment is carried out to the highest industry standards. All regional training facilities will need to meet SPRA s training centre specification and be audited by NASC. Fees and process Interested employers should contact SPRA who will then send out registration and grant forms, as well as information on course fees and methods of payment. Employers will then pay the training provider for the course and be reimbursed by a grant of 2,525 ( 1,125 attendance, 400 VQ achievement and 1000 incentive payment paid every 13 weeks in arrears by way of the, AO8 Grant form becoming eligible from the start date of the trainee s entry point on to the SUP). Who is it aimed at? The Single Ply Roofing SUP is aimed at single ply installers who have been working in the trade for a period of time but are in need of extra training to become competent at NVQ level 2. The likely audiences are: Experienced installers who are currently working on site in the market and require training in order to
4 SUP - NVQ LEVEL 2 become competent across all of the mandatory units specific to Single Ply Roofing (QCF Units 685, 110v2, 686, 641, 642 and 643 see over for descriptions) Improvers and roofing assistants who are used to working within install teams and wish to take the next step to becoming competent crafts people. Installers who are returning to the trade after a gap of several years, and who are in need of refresher training on one or more of the mandatory units. How does it work and how long is the course? A SPRA qualified assessor will conduct a short interview and complete a skills scan with the learner to establish where the gaps are in relation to the Single Ply Roofing NVQ and if the learner s needs can be addressed within a window of between five and thirteen days off-the-job training (mode of attendance may vary) then the candidate will qualify for the SUP. The assessor will explain other routes to the learner if their needs fall outside this 5-13 day window. The assessor will also advise on how to gather the necessary evidence from the workplace and how to build a portfolio to achieve the NVQ. It is important to remember that the learner must be working on single sly roofing projects during the SUP to generate the evidence and performing a role where the mandatory units are achievable. 5 COURSE CONTENT What will be cover on the course? Practical training will be done on model roofs/rigs and the knowledge will be covered using various means such as learning packages and resources, lectures and self-study. The course will provide learners with enough training to cover the six main units relating to skills and knowledge for Single Ply Roofing which are as follows: Mandatory Units covered by the Single Ply Roofing SUP QCF685: Preparing surfaces for membrane roofing systems in the workplace QCF110v2: Applying Single Ply Roofing in the Workplace QCF686: Repairing membrane roofing systems in the workplace Common Mandatory Units for all NVQ 2 Awards QCF641: Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace QCF642: Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace QCF643: Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace Additional Units There is also a series of bolt-on additional units which the centre may allow learners to take at their discretion, providing they can be covered in the 5-13 day training window, and they are as follows: QCF93v2: Installing Decking for Flat Roof Coverings in the Workplace QCF148v2: Installing support systems for green roofs in the Workplace QCF298v2: Installing Solar Collectors to Roofs in the Workplace For more details and to talk about taking this further contact: Gary Walpole gw@spra.co.uk

Potential candidates: Existing operatives wanting a formal qualification Existing operatives wanting to broaden knowledge Operatives returning after period off site Existing lower skilled operatives wanting to become a recognised craftsperson 2. Operatives must complete a skills scan. Candidate centred environment 1. Training is directed at individual s need 2. Gaps in knowledge identified to create personal training programme 3. Varied training delivery situations to suit candidate s needs 4. Delivers knowledge at a personal level to improve competency 5. Training is tailored to allow workforce to learn in areas complimentary to existing skills
