1 Microfilm Reader Companion Scanner Before you start, do you have your flash drive? This machine does not save data. First, make sure that the Companion Scanner is turned on. The button in the bottom left corner should glow green, like this: * If you find the machine frozen, please let us know at the front desk, or you can turn the machine off then on again to reset it. If smudgy, please ask us for a cloth at the front desk. To start, ask for the slide holder at the information desk. It holds 12 slides. Place each slide in the holder so that two pins hold it in place. Then open the lid of the scanner and place the slides so that the triangles match up like so: Here is an up close shot:

2 Now, close the lid and double click Slide Scanner on the desktop screen: If any error messages pop up referring to previous sessions, you can close or cancel them. Now, you will see a popup like the one below. Press Select to select EPSON Perfection as your Source:

3 Next, you will see a window like the one below. You can t close it, but you can move it out of the way by clicking and holding the gray bar at the top, and dragging the window downwards:

4 Once you do that, you ll see this Control Panel: For the machine to read your slides, you ll have to change the Type box to read Slide (Colour), like so: Then click Preview. The machine will start to make a whirring noise as it scans the slides, and the window should show a BUSY message while it scans, like so:

5 Now, remember that window you pushed down and out of the way? That was the Preview Window, and it should still be at the bottom of the screen. It may be that you pushed it all the way to the bottom. Find it and drag it back upwards again by clicking, holding, and dragging on the gray bar: Your slides should show up on that window!:

6 The next thing to do is select each slide individually, so that we can move them into the Scan Write window to work with them or save them. To select all your slides, simply click in the top left corner of each (one by one), and drag to the bottom right corner of each one. The selected slides will appear with a white border around them, and a number in the top left corner enumerating them, like so:

7 Now, move your Scan Preview window down again so that you can see the Control Panel window once again. As a reminder, it looks like this.

8 Click the Scan button in the bottom right corner. The scanner will start whirring and showing a BUSY signal again. It will take a few moments. This is what you will see:

10 When the scanner is done whirring, you can click Finish in the Control Panel window. Now, look for the window that says Scan Write in the top gray bar. (Again, you may need to move the other windows out of the way to see it.) Your slides should show up in the Scan Write window, and it s from here that you can edit them, and/or save or print them. Pretty cool!: Say you want to do a little minimal editing. Simply click on the Edit Scans button at the top of the screen:

11 A Few Words About Editing: You must edit the slides one at a time. Select the one you want to edit first by clicking it once. An edit bar (pictured below) will appear. Now, here are some things you can do to edit images: Crop the image (note!: you will have to click Crop Image before AND after cropping to save the crop!) rotate it (in case you scanned it sideways), change the brightness (also try Auto Enhance for this), change the image from color to black and white, or sharpen it If you make a change you don t like, you can always click Undo Changes, near the bottom right corner. However, keep in mind that you will lose ALL the changes to that slide once you press this button! The image will revert back to the way it was scanned originally (there is unfortunately no way to undo the editing step by step the editing software is not that sophisticated). Once you are happy with all the changes and would like to move on to the next slide, click Save Changes in the bottom right corner of the screen:

12 Printing Images of Your Slides To print your slides to the library s printer, you must select the ones you want to print. Select multiple slides by pressing and holding down the Ctrl button at the bottom left corner of the keyboard while you click on each slide you want to print. You will know the slides are selected when they appear with a blue border: Now, go up to the top of the window and select the Print button:

13 Choose whether you want your slides to print out in the portrait (taller) or landscape (wider) orientation. You will probably want to scale them to fit the paper, otherwise the slides will show up very small on the printout. Click Print : You will now be asked to choose a printer. Most people like to print out their slides in color, and if you do too, then select the Color option in the drop down box, then click OK:

14 Wait a moment until you see a confirmation box appear. You ll see the cost of your slides (in my case, the cost is $3.00, because I am printing six color pages at.50 each). Click OK to confirm the job: Now, walk over to the print release station, which is located to the left of the information desk. The screen looks like this:

15 Press once in the Card/User box, and type in microfilm by using the ABC keyboard touchpad. Then press the green OK button: Next you should see a screen that tells you again how much your print job will cost, like the one below. (Don t see your print job? You may have forgotten to click OK on the confirmation page. You ll need to go back to the scanner and check!):

16 Now, put the payment for your prints into the machine just to the left of the print release station. This machine takes coins and $1 or $5 bills, and will give change: Lastly, press Print all on the print release screen, and your prints should come out! If you need assistance with your printouts, please ask us at the desk.

17 Saving Your Slides Digitally Using a USB Drive Whether or not you print your slides out, you will also want to save them to a USB drive so that you can take them with you and view them on another computer (for example, at home). Here s how. First, put your USB drive into the computer tower on the left side of the desk with the scanner, like so:

18 Now, back in the Scan Write window, make sure all the slides you want to save are selected (this should be ALL of them!), then choose the Send to USB button at the top: Here s what you ll see:

19 Make sure the PDF (many files) option is selected so that all your pictures transfer over: Now click Send to USB. If you want to make sure the images transferred over to the USB, you can click View USB, however, be aware that what you see will look like this (not very descriptive!):

20 To actually SEE the pics on your USB drive, you can go back to the desktop and select USB E drive button. You should see a scanwrite folder. Click on the folder to open the file:

21 Here is the file with your slides:

22 I am going to go ahead and open one of these files up. Here is what I see the edited slide image successfully saved to my USB drive as a PDF! Hooray!!:
