Administrative Information Preferred Citation Smithsonian Institution Archives,, United States National Museum, Collected Notes, Photographs, and Graphic Illustrations on Descriptive Entry This collection, which probably began to be assembled in the 1930s, comprises an information file on turtles, containing a high proportion of visual material: chiefly photographs (often only negatives) and graphic illustrations, many in watercolor. Several of these are by illustrator Antonio Zeno Shindler, and one is by Spencer F. Baird. Working notes and correspondence pertaining to turtles make up the balance of the collection. Leonhard Stejneger appears initially to have collected the material, and Doris Mable Cochran continued the task.
