11 Main sustainability impacts R&D Supply Production End of life (product) Thanks to its properties, steel can be recycled indefinitely without losing its properties. The utilization of scrap in SSAB s steel production is also an important part of improving material efficiency in SSAB. Effective management of residuals enables recirculation of material to SSAB production. Additionally new revenue streams are created by processing and selling products externally. Customers SSAB s products and solutions can improve customer s process efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint for the end-users. Steel is durable material compared to its weight which has a significant effect on the amount of energy required for transportation, handling and installation of RR and RD piles. Upgrading to higher steel grade enables use of less materials and reduced emissions. Transport SSAB focuses on minimizing environmental footprint through timely transport and minimized fuel consumption. The journey from raw material to finished product does not require long transportation distances: Most of the raw material is supplied from the Nordics and finished products are manufactured in Finland and Sweden. 11

13 Environmental benefits with RRs and RDs - High strength steel piles Higher load-bearing capacity, lower costs and improved energy efficiency with RRs and RDs pile range and high strength S550J2H steel grade Less environmental impacts: Higher load-bearing capacity with same pile dimensions reduced amount of piles, more economical solution Corresponding load-bearing capacity with smaller pile dimensions more economical piles, easy installation Total energy consumption is reduced in foundation work. 14 Environmental benefits with RR and RD piles splicing technique Environmental benefits thanks to excellent capacity utilization as well as high material and resource utilization with RR and RD piles Efficient RR pile capacity and material utilization SSAB s mechanical splices in RR piles enable utilization of the whole structural strength of the pile cross section in design. High quality rigid splices have been tested and function reliably. Bending stiffness of all SSAB mechanical splices exceed 75% of the pile pipe bending stiffness. RR piles splicing technique eliminates waste caused due to cutting the pile. Cut pile part can be utilized in the next pile. RD piles threaded splicing technique makes drilled steel pile splicing faster. Time saving in using threaded sleeves compared to welding at site reduces the total energy need for piling work. 14

15 Environmental benefits with RD pile wall Significant environmental benefits can be gained when upgrading piles used in RD pile wall to SSAB s high-strength steel S550J2H Steel grade of piles S550J2H produced by SSAB for piling purposes can be used for RD pile walls. Selecting a stronger steel grade S550J2H allows using piles of smaller diameter or wall thickness which results in better resource and material efficiency. 15

21 EPD Norge The vision for EPD Norway is that the EPD will be corporate foundation for open information about products and services' environmental performance. The Norwegian EPD Foundation was established (2002) to answer the desire for standardized and internationally valid Environmental Product Declarations for products and services. Environmental information is provided in a standardized and objective way. EPD must be verified by an approved independent verifier and registered with the Norwegian EPD Foundation. SSAB s EPD registration to EPD Norge will be finished during the spring It includes Piles, structural hollow sections, precision tubes, line pipes and steel sections SSAB s LCA calculations are based on the actual manufacturing processes, not on average values of European steel works. Verified, approved and registered EPDs in 21

23 Building material assessments in Sweden BYGGVARUBEDÖMNINGEN SSAB s steel piles has been rated with the highest grade Recommended in Swedish Byggvarubedömningen classification. All RR(s) and RD(s) products with all available steel grades are included. Target of the classification is to have more environmental friendly and healthier construction as well as residential and working environment. SUNDAHUS SundaHus is an independent company providing services for environmentally conscious material choices. It offers a comprehensive solution for systematic efforts at phasing out hazardous substances in a building's lifecycle. SSAB s steel piles has been rated with a value B (A-D), that is a product that doesn t effect on human health or the environment. 23

24 BREEAM and LEED Steel in construction has many benefits which link to Green Building structures are light, construction times are short and materials are extremely recyclable. We at SSAB offer relevant product data and instructions on how our solutions can help our customers achieve high ratings. SSAB has long accumulated expertise in environmental certification systems for buildings and the aim is to support customers to apply for certification. SSAB has knowledge and ability to support customers in environmental certification systems like LEED and BREEAM. 24

26 CE marking SSAB introduced CE marking for piling products in May CE marking covers the entire pile structure, manifests the requirements and conformity of the mechanical splices. It ensures that the product has been manufactured specifically for piling. CE marking enables the free movement of construction products throughout Europe. 26

Each construction product covered by a European harmonized standard or for which a European Technical Assessment has been issued needs this Declaration and has to be CE marked.
