1 Students Executive Council Nomination Package
2 What is the Students Executive Council (SEC)? Elected by the students, SEC is the administrative governing board for SAITSA. SEC is made up of four positions: President, Vice President External, Vice President Academic and Vice President Student Life. This is a full-time position on a one year term! This term is from May 1, 2015 to May 15, President This person is the propelling force behind all things SAITSA. They act as the point-of-contact on behalf of SAITSA to external parties like the media, and they play a role in almost everything SAITSA does. It s a huge job, but the experience you gain in incredible. Vice President External This position is charged with developing relationships with the municipal and provincial governments and participates on several provincial and federal lobby groups. While on campus, he/she gets to work with SAITSA staff in securing external support for events, ticket sales and coordinates the selection and placement of artwork for display. Vice President Academic Charged with all areas of student concerns, student advocacy and the general well-being of all SAITSA members, this person is looking out for the underdog! The VP Academic acts as an advisor to students. It s a very important position on campus. Vice President Student Life Involvement in events, student clubs and campus activities make this individual the life of the party. This person is in charge bringing the FUN to campus! Life at SAIT isn t all about studying and work, we ve gotta strike a balance with a dose of fun and excitement! Why do I want to be a part of SEC? Talk to as many people as you can during the Campaign Period to get as many votes as you can on voting days. 5 EXPLANATIONS We understand that this process can be daunting, especially if you are not familiar with elections and/or student government. The following is to help give some clarification. Candidate Profile As a candidate for the SEC it is optional (but highly encouraged) that you submit a Candidate Profile. This profile may be used on saitsa.com, in The Weal newspaper and on the election ballot. The Candidate Profile is an opportunity for all candidates to share information on themselves to fellow students along with their platform and why they want to be a representative on the SEC. Your Candidate Profile should include the program you re in, why you are running and what you would like to accomplish while in office. Your Candidate Profile should be no longer than 100 words and will be cut off at 100 words. Candidate Profiles are due via to natasha.lundrigan@edu.sait.ca the same time as your Nomination Package is due. Late Candidate Profiles will not be accepted. Speeches As a candidate for the SEC you are required to do a two minute speech to the student body. This speech will be an on-camera speech recorded by the SAITSA marketing department on March 3, 2015, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The purpose of this speech is to outline your platform and goals to express to the student body, giving them a reason to vote for you! Nomination Period Nominate can be defined as an act of being formally entered as a candidate into an election. In order to be nominated for SAITSA s elections you must receive 25 signatures of students who would like to nominate you. It is imperative that your Nomination Form be handed in to MC107 by noon on the deadline in order to be accepted. Late nomination packages will not be accepted. All Candidates Meeting This meeting is mandatory for all candidates. This meeting is where candidates will receive tips on campaigning, meet the Political Committee and receive the rules to abide by during the elections. Campaign Period Campaigning can be defined as the act of convincing people to vote for you. Campaigning cannot start until after the All Candidates Meeting and must come to an end as soon as polls close. Voting All voting is available online. A student s schedule is very busy, having voting available online gives students a chance to vote at 3:00 in the morning should they choose to. Poster tear-down When the polls close at 4:00pm SAIT Polytechnic must be clean from campaign materials. While waiting for the results to be announced candidates will go around campus and tear down all election-related material. Poster tear-down is mandatory unless otherwise excused by the Political Committee. Political Committee For each election SAITSA hires a Political Committee consisting of a CRO (Chief Returning Officer), DRO (Deputy Returning Officer) and SAL (Student at Large). It is the job of the Political Committee to ensure elections are fair and transparent. Campaign Manager/Team A Campaign Manager is a student whose role is to coordinate the campaign of the candidate. A campaign team are students that volunteer to help out with a candidate s campaign.
