2 1. You are able to participate in the Challenge if you work, live, or attend school in Fall River, Somerset, Swansea, or Westport. You may join individually or as a member of a team (A minimum of 3 participants constitutes a team.) All team members are eligible for individual prizes. 2. As a community member, you must weigh- in at Greater Fall River RE- CREATION (45 Rock Street, Fall River) any time between Wednesday and Saturday of weigh- in weeks (see calendar) or at challenges on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Kuss Middle School (52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River.) 3. You will be given an ID number on the back of your Challenge Key Tag which will allow you to be anonymous when weighing- in. If you bring your Challenge Key Tag, you can show your ID number and your weight will be recorded. 4. You must be 16 years of age or older to participate in the Challenge, however, we encourage you to create a healthy environment for your entire family. If a child under the age of 16 would like to participate in an exercise class, please call ahead to get approval from the instructor.
3 5. Weigh- ins will happen throughout the challenge until the final weigh- in. In order to be eligible for prizes you MUST be weighed in at the FINAL weigh- in. Weigh- in days/weeks are highlighted on your Challenge calendar. 6. In order to be eligible for the Best Attendance Award, you must check in with an identified staff member and show your key tag (This is also by ID # on your Challenge Key Tag.) 7. To be officially eligible for the grand prizes, you must be signed up by January 30, 2016 (After the Challenge Kick- Off, you can sign up at RE- CREATION, 45 Rock Street, Fall River, or at Kuss Middle School, 52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River during challenges.) 8. If you lose your Challenge Key Tag, you are welcome to purchase a new one at Greater Fall River RE- CREATION for $5. For a complete list of Challenges and Wellness Class dates, times and locations, please see the Calendar of Events at the end of this book.
4 1. There are 2 FREE challenges per week, Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. Please refer to the calendar in this book for more information. There will also be bonus classes throughout the month at guest gyms. In order to participate in these challenges, you MUST BRING your Challenge Key Tag. 2. There will be Coaches at each challenge to serve as leaders for the challenge and offer words of encouragement. 3. Your Challenge Key Tag will help you receive discounts at the following fitness centers: Greater Fall River RE- CREATION, Fusion, General, All Generations, FitWorks Online, Fall River YMCA, and TKO. 4. You will receive a ticket for prize drawings each time you officially weigh in for the Challenge. This unique ticket can be saved for the Challenge Finale on May 6 for an auction that will consist of gift certificates, fitness equipment and more! 5. Your Key Tag will get you access to FREE nutrition opportunities every Saturday at 10:00 am throughout the Challenge. There will also be free classes on various Wednesdays throughout the Challenge (See Wellness Classes page for more information). 6. Every Wednesday and Saturday challenge you attend will have a fitness prize that is given away to a participant. Everyone in attendance is eligible to win!
5 MEN & WOMEN INDIVIDUAL PRIZES: 1 st Place $500 + Award 2 nd Place $250 + Award 3 rd Place $100 + Award In addition, one participant will be recognized for having the most improved health screening and a second for having the best attendance throughout the challenge! TEAM PRIZES: 1 st Place Free Gym Membership + Award 2 nd Place Free Gym Membership + Award 3 rd Place Free Gym Membership + Award DRAWINGS: There will be a FREE giveaway at every fitness challenge. You are entered into the drawing for simply attending the challenge. These giveaways include fitness gear, t- shirts, tickets to the Challenge Finale, water bottles, and more! FINALE AUCTION: At every weigh- in, participants will receive a ticket, which can be saved for a large auction at the Greater Fall River Challenge Finale. You are not permitted to enter tickets for other people at the finale. Participant must be in attendance to win!

7 WALKING PROGRAM Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm Saturdays 9:00-10:00 am Location: Kuss Middle School, 52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River Mass in Motion and Healthy City Fall River, as part of the Walk Fall River campaign, will be providing weekly indoor walking groups at Kuss Middle School. Join Worksite Wellness Coordinator Angie Bras as she leads the group on Wednesday nights and/or join Mass in Motion Fall River Senior Champions Kathy Lowney and Kathy Duclos on Saturday mornings. There is no cost for the walking program and it s a great alternative to the challenges! It can be used as an option as you gain confidence and endurance to join in on Challenge activities happening simultaneously at the school. How to Lose Without Going Hungry Saturdays 10:00-11:00 am Location: Kuss Middle School, 52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River Join us every Saturday of the Challenge for a free 1- hour support group for people who want to learn how to follow a lower- carbohydrate diet, either to lose weight or to stabilize/prevent medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. A brief explanation of the principles behind how low- carb diets work will be offered at the beginning of each group. The group will then share information on foods and recipes as well as tips on shopping and eating away from home.
8 NATIONAL DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM Wednesdays 4:30 pm 5:30 pm Location: People, Incorporated, 4 South Main St, Fall River This yearlong prevention program was developed for individuals who have been diagnosed with pre- diabetes or are at high risk for developing diabetes. It is based on research done that proves Type 2 diabetes CAN be prevented. Goals include weight loss and increased physical activity. It starts as weekly 1- hour classes followed by monthly meetings. The program starts February 3 rd as an informational session that explains the goals and expectations of the programs and will run thereafter every Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 pm. Eat Healthy, Be Active Workshops Wednesdays 5:30 pm 6:30 pm Location: People, Inc. 4 South Main St, Fall River These six 1- hour workshops are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the 2010 & 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. These workshops are designed to be repeated and create a strong supportive network to meet individual goals. Walking groups and 5K goals have been incorporated to make meeting goals easy and fun. Classes run Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm on the following dates: Jan 13, 20, & 27; Feb 3, 10, 17; Mar 2, 9, 16, & 23; Apr 6 & 12; May 4, 11, 18, & 25; June 1 & 8. 9 Nutrition & Diabetes Education Classes Wednesdays 5:30 pm 6:30 pm Location: People, Inc. 4 South Main St, Fall River These 1- hour long classes are geared towards general nutrition and diabetes education. Classes rotate between four different options including Fun & Learning Sessions (interactive learning activities), Certified Diabetes Educator Sessions (question/answer style forum), Healthy Cooking Classes, and Grocery Tours (tours at local supermarkets that focus on label reading). Classes start January 6 th and run through the end of May (there is no class on March 23 rd ). All classes (except grocery tours) are held at People, Incorporated, 4 South Main St, Fall River. Classes are open to all and do not need pre- registration except for grocery tours as the max is people. Motivation, Maintenance & Prevention January 27, February 26, March 16 6:00 pm 6:30 pm Location: Kuss Middle School, 52 Globe Mills Ave, Fall River Join Michael See, MS, RCEP, CDE of the Diabetes Management Program from SouthCoast Health in 3 informative sessions about Diabetes prevention. Michael will talk about maintenance of body weight and diet, motivation in nutrition and fitness, as well as preventative exercise programs that can maintain overall wellness.
