Letter of Offer - Entry 201 Dear Applicant, Congratulations on receiving a Course Offer in St. John s Central College: If you intend accepting your place, then you must provisionally register within 10 working days (Round 1 and 2) and working days (Round 3, Aug/Sept) of receiving this offer If you do not we will assume that you are not taking up the offer and you will forfeit your place. Yours sincerely, Mary Leahy College Principal Provisional Registration Step 1: Provisional Registration Step 1: Go to our Online Admissions System at and with your username and password; Pay a minimum deposit of (Does not apply to VTOS students) In exceptional circumstances, if you have a difficulty with this, payment may be made to the Main College Office. Please note that only Debit Cards/Visa/MasterCard payments can be accepted in the Main Office. The College cannot accept Cash/Cheques. Provisional Registration Step 2: Call to the College Office with (or Post) the following; (Office Hours: 9.00am-4.30pm) All students are required to present: Birth Certificate Pink Place of Offer Card PPS Number Medical Card if applicable Educational Evidence (copy required) Full Registration Step 3: Pay the balance of your Course Charges including the PLC Government charge. Note: The College recommends students to enter into a payment plan. Please contact the Main Office. The Course Charges are outlined on the grid (Pages and 7). International students to see page 9. These generally cover Registration Packs, Technical Services, Student Wi-Fi/Broadband, Library Services, essential Course Materials, and Graduation etc. 2
4 Medical Cards If you hold a current medical card you are exempt from the PLC Government Charge and the (Level ) and (Level ) QQI Exam Fee. Please note you must show your medical card to the Office for this exemption to be made. The Office must see the actual card and the closing date for waiving of fees is October 31st 201. If you do not show your medical card by this date your fees will not be able to be waived. If you have applied for Vocational Training & Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) and you are unsuccessful please note that you must call to the Office and show your medical card again for fees to be waived. Maintenance Grant If you apply for a Maintenance Grant and are successful, you will be refunded the PLC Government Charge. Liability for Fees Liability for fees rests with the student. Students with outstanding fees will have college facilities withdrawn; will not receive exam results and will not progress to further studies within the college. Under no circumstances is a student allowed to graduate until all fees have been discharged to the college. It is your responsibility to ensure that the fees have been waived; you will see this on your Payment Receipt. Student ID Cards At Student Orientation (and specified ID Card sessions) ID Cards will be issued. General Refunds For full details of Refunds Policy please refer to the college website: 3
5 Vocational Training & Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) if you are unsuccessful in receiving your VTOS place please note that registration student charges are due. If you have a medical card or receive the Back to Education Allowance you must contact the office before the October 31st to avail of any fee waiver. It is your responsibility to ensure that the fees have been waived; you will see this on your Payment Receipt. 2. Disability Support Service Dear Student, Welcome to St. John s Central College. The college fosters an inclusive learning environment. It endeavours to accommodate disability and diversity and it aims to empower each student to participate in an inclusive learning environment, which is free from physical, attitudinal and informational barriers as is practically possible. Back to Education Allowance Please note that it is your responsibility to notify the College if you are receiving Back to Education Allowance. You must notify the College by October 31st 201 for the fee exemption of to be applied. It is your responsibility to ensure that the fees have been waived; you will see this on your Payment Receipt. This environment emphasis equality for all students and the focus is on ability and not on difference or disability. Students with a disability have a responsibility to disclose their Disability / Specific Learning Difficulties on their application form. When a student has disclosed their Disability/ Specific Learning Difficulties they have an opportunity to meet with the Disability Support Officer and supports will be outlined. Speakers of Languages other than English: If you are an applicant whose first language is not English and you have been offered a place, the offer is conditional on successful completion of an English language test. You must pass this test before you will be allowed register. The college year commences with Welcome & Orientation Sessions during the second week of September. You will be notified about this closer to the date. It is St. John s Central College policy that students can access Department of Education & Skills funding once they provide up to date elevant Educational Psychological / Medical reports to support their application through the Disability Support Service. Letters from GP s are not acceptable in any circumstances as an assessment of disability Assessments from a list of specialists available on request will be acceptable. Access to Further Education Programmes for Non EU Nationals For any queries contact: Derval Glavin International Students Officer If you are a non EU National applying to join a course at St. John s, you are asked to read this document for your information. 1. St. John s Central College welcomes applications from international students. The college seeks to provide an atmosphere where international students will feel comfortable and gain both academically and personally from the time spent in the college. 2. As all courses are taught in English, the college will need to be satisfied that students whose first language is not English are proficient enough in the language to be able to follow their chosen course. To determine this, an English Language ESOL test will need to be undertaken. 3. Our courses are funded by the National Development Fund and by the European Social Fund. For this reason there are no course fees paid by EU citizens or Stamp 4 holders. The only payments required are to cover Exam Fees and other expenses which are charged to the Student Service Fund. 4. We are obliged to examine applications from students coming from non EU countries in more detail, and must apply the full course fee in some circumstances.. The course fee for the academic year was 33 (may be subject to change in ) 4. St. John s Central College - Fast track to Information Technology (FIT) Courses The following courses are being run in collaboration with Fastrack to Information Technology (FIT). Applicants are generally in receipt of a Social Welfare payment and may apply for VTOS (Vocational Training and Opportunities Scheme) or BTEA (Back to Education Allowance). St. John s Central College FIT Programmes Cloud Computing Level Cloud Computing Level IT Sales & Digital Marketing Level Sustainable Technology Level Recruitment, Interviews and Enrolment Courses are advertised through the college website and through direct mailshot conducted by FIT in cooperation with the Department of Social Protection (DSP). Applicants must apply directly through the online college admissions system on its website. Information sessions are held in the college and potential applicants are called for aptitude tests to facilitate applicant enrolment to suitable programmes. All applicants will be called for an aptitude test and interview. Student Charges As with all courses in St. John s Central College student charges apply, however there are in certain circumstances exemptions to standard charges: VTOS applicants approved and offered a place are exempt from all course charges. Full details of benefits are available from the VTOS officer Verona Noonan: vnoonan@stjohnscollege.ie - Student Services Centre Students in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance pay the appropriate deposit. Students who are in receipt of the BTEA are not eligible for a maintenance grant. 9 . Information for Speakers of Languages other than English Hello and Welcome to St John s Central College. As part our application process you are requested to attend for a Language examination in English. The test is given in order to gauge your level and standard of English. The examination dates and times are as follows: Please attend the exam date nearest to you interview. You will be notified by letter and text message. Dates of examination to be posted on college website. About the examination: The examination is of one and a half hour duration. The examination consists of: Part One: Part Two: Part Three: Part Four: Part Five: Listening Comprehension Grammar Grammar and sentence construction Cloze Test Written Section Examination Dates: (Language test dates will be posted on the college website) Monday 4th April at 9.30am, Room 21 Friday 3rd June at 9.30am, Room 21 Sept: date and time to be set On the day of the examination please bring: Photo Identification, (Stamp 4, passport, national identity card or other is acceptable) A photocopied version of your passport, national identity card and any language qualifications or previous courses you have attended in the Further Education Sector. If you are currently in your leaving certificate year please bring a letter from your school to state that you are a student in your school. A pen or biro. If you cannot attend on the day of the examination please contact the main office as soon as possible. A limited number of examinations will take place over the next couple of months. Exemptions: Candidates who have sat the Leaving Certificate in Ireland and who have taken English as a subject can proceed straight to registration, but need proof that they have take the subject to the Leaving Certificate Level. If an international student is currently doing their leaving certificate please note the following: Regardless of nationality they can ask their secondary school for a letter to state they are doing their leaving certificate and to post this letter into the main office/or to me. This will exempt them from the ESOL language test. Derval Glavin: dglavin@stjohnscollege.ie After the examination: The college will contact you by either text/ or by letter. Once you have successfully passed the examination, the College will send you a letter. In this letter you will have a card which entitles you to register for your chosen course. Without this card you will not be able to register for your chosen course. International students will have to pay full fees and Department of Education and Skills fees before a letter will be issued regarding a student visa. Students from non EU countries Students from non EU countries & not resident in Ireland You are liable for the full course fee You must produce a copy of your Passport or National Identity Card You must have permission from the immigration authorities to live and study in Ireland. You must therefore apply for a Student Visa. The college will not engage in any communications with the visa authorities on your behalf. If you require a letter from the college stating that you have been offered a place, this can only be issued following your registration and payment of the full fee. The letter will state, that a course place is being offered subject to you receiving a Student Visa. The offer of a place does not confer any right of residency on you. Should there be any subsequent difficulty with your visa, this fee will be returned to you. Students from non EU countries & currently resident in Ireland You are liable for the full course fee You must produce a copy of your Passport or National Identity Card You must produce a copy of your valid residence permit/green Handbook stamped by the Gardaí. The college will not engage in any communication with the visa authorities on your behalf. Spouse of an EU National Where an EU National has moved from one country to another within the EU to work, no fees apply. You must produce all relevant documentation to support your application. Persons granted leave to stay in Ireland on humanitarian grounds No fees apply. This includes dependent spouse and children. You must produce all relevant documentation to support your application. Asylum Seekers Only certain categories of Asylum Seekers have the right to attend Further Education Courses. The following are the relevant categories; 9 Persons seeking Asylum (Right to Work Category) If you were in Ireland prior to July 2th 1999, were seeking asylum and have a letter from the Department of Justice stating that you are eligible to seek work, then no fees apply You will need to produce all relevant documentation, including your letter and Registration Card.
11 General Information for Asylum Seekers If you are seeking asylum in this country then you should note that your enrolment on any course is without prejudice to your application for asylum. It cannot therefore be used in any way as a basis for seeking to stay in the country, if your application to stay is refused. Refugees Under the terms of the Refugee Act 199, Refugees have the same rights of access to all educational services as Irish Nationals. Therefore no international fees apply. You will need to produce all relevant documentation, including your Registration Card 7. Maintenance Grants Scheme for Students attending PLC Courses The Department of Education and Skills provides a means-tested maintenance grant for students attending a full-time course. V.T.O.S (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) Please Note: The closing date for completed application forms is 4.00 pm Thursday, 8th Sept, 201. Places are limited. Places are prioritised on (i) Educational need (ii) Length of time on Social Welfare. The maximum time allowed on VTOS is 2 years. If you have already been 2 years on VTOS, then you can apply for Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) through the DSP. (Department of Social Protection) Guidelines The minimum number of days required to qualify for VTOS is 1 days. These days must be in place before the start date of your course.
