1 Norway: Northern Lights Tromsø City Break Activities Many of the activities available in Tromsø are in high demand and some can fill up very quickly as they run in small groups. As a result it is important to consider booking your activities well in advance. If you come across a tour that you really like, please inform one of our travel advisors as soon as possible. In this brochure, the activities have been broken into daytime & evening activities to make it easier for you to make your selection The Northern Lights are particles that are hurled into space after storms on the sun s surface. They are attracted by the magnetic North Pole (and South Pole) and enter the atmosphere in a ring shaped zone around the poles. In order to see the Northern Lights, it must be dark and clear so it is harder to see the Northern Lights between May and August. It s also difficult to see them in the city, so a lot of the tours head out of Tromsø and away from artificial light. 2 Norway: Northern Lights Tromsø City Break Activities Daytime activities The Cable Car A visit to Tromsø isn't complete without a trip on the Cable Car. Take the ride to Mount Storsteinen (421m) for a fantastic view. The heated lounge is open every day and the café is open on weekends. Evening rides are on request only. Please note parts of the mountain are not secured for children Tour code TOSD001 Cable Car ticket Cable Car Station Shore walk, lunch & Whale Watching at Vengsøy Island Shore walk is perfect for all our guests. Imagine staying for hours on the beach looking for beach crab, small fish and sea shell. From the end of November to mid-january we also have the possibility to view orcas, porpoises and the mighty Hump-back whales feeding on herring in the fjords. If we are lucky we will see these whales jumping and playing around. Of course, you don`t have to drive, you can choose to sit back and relax in the comfort of our sledges and let our guide do the work for you. Our dogs are very friendly and enjoy their work. We will supply thermal suits and give you a few tips on how to become a successful "musher. 3 Snowmobile adventure in the Lyngen Alps The Lyngen Alps are one of northern Norway's premier winter wilderness playgrounds. This exhilarating snowmobile tour takes you from fjord to mountain - offering you the chance to experience the fantastic scenery and abundant nature found here. Our trip begins on easy ground, following a well-established trail, allowing us time to get to grips with our machines. Our schedule means we have plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos and check everyone is happy. The route takes us up and into the alpine landscape which defines this area. We follow the contours of the mountains and the trail becomes much more exciting. This tour is surrounded by fantastic alpine mountain scenery. A fabulous trip which gives you experiences between speed and balance and an experience which is guaranteed to stay with you for a long time! Depending on the snow conditions we will use alternatives. Tour code TOSD006 7 hours Return transport, warm suits, hot meal & drinks Rica Ishavshotel Whale Safari This year Humpback and Killer whales may be seen off the coast of Tromsø and we are pleased to offer a safari in search of these magnificent mammals from mid-november to mid-january. With a big day cruiser limited for 120 persons you ll set off on a whale safari out to the open sea in search of the whales. This boat is normally used in Spitsbergen to look for polar bears so here you can use three different decks that gives you the best view of the whales if they appear. On the way out sea eagles and seals are often seen. In some cases for smaller booking numbers rib boats will be used instead. These smaller boats really give you the opportunity to study the whales up close. Tour code TOSD007 Departs hours whale safari, protective clothing, transport (where required) Reindeer Raid with traditional Sámi food When you arrive in Risvika, your guide will provide you with warm clothing. You ll be taken up to the reindeer that are waiting for you with the sledges. From here you will go on a calm but amazing trip and experience the traditional Sámi way of transport several years ago. While sledding through the Norwegian winter landscape the only thing you will hear is the reindeer belle. The sled ride takes about minutes. On your return to the lavvo, you ll be served coffee and the traditional Sámi meal Bidos (reindeer meat in a vegetable soup). The warmth from the bonfire and the warm soup will bring you back in time and give you a glimpse to feel and experience how the Sámi people lived their lives. Your guide for the evening will also tell you stories about the Sámi people s history and way of living. You will be shown how to throw lasso on antlers, and you will get the opportunity to try it yourself. If the weather is rough you will have a fresh experience. Our top trained dogs will find the way no matter what. You can choose to sit in the sled our drive your own team of huskies. There s a good chance of spotting some wildlife on the way through the snow covered landscape. After about one hour of dog sledding we return to the ranch where you will meet our puppies and maybe make some four legged friends. You will be served a Sámi meal (Bidos) with coffee and cake for dessert inside a warm Sámi tent (lavvo). We also offer vegetarian food. If you wish to drive you own sled let us know when you book, but if the weather/snow conditions is bad you may have to sit in the sled driven by one of our guides. 4 Evening activities Non-stop Northern Lights Chase This tour is a non-stop Northern Lights chase every evening. Every vehicle used has a professional driver and an authorised guide on board. This crew is on one specific mission: to take you wherever the chances to admire the magnificent Aurora are (at that precise moment) best. If you have a good viewing of the Aurora, pictures will be sent to your after the tour at no extra cost. You will be served hot drinks and you can grill sausages over an open fire inside a Sámi Tent (lavvo) while you wait for the lights. Outside you can lay down on reindeer skins or sit on chairs while you scout the dark sky for the lights. Your guide will answer any questions you may have. We can of course never guarantee that it will come, but if not, a visit to the dog yard with puppies is well worth it! You also have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional local dinner (Bidos). You can also take a warm bath outside in our new Jacuzzi. This adventure is suitable for everyone! 5 Overnight at Camp Tamok An overnight program includes an evening adventure and a morning adventure the following day: Three experiences in one! After spending the night you will be transferred directly to one of our morning services, starting at approximately Our skilled guides take care of you, making sure you are safe and comfortable at all times. The Aurora Chalet is our most private accommodation for two guests. There are three Aurora Chalets available: small cabins without electricity and water, but heated and with one important detail: one of the roof sides has a window placed in the direction of the Northern Lights. Your double bed is placed right under the window; at the perfect angle for watching the lights should they appear. Please note this overnight adventure requires that you book an evening and a morning excursion alongside. We recommend evening snowmobiling and morning husky sledding (or vice versa). These activities will be at an extra cost, depending on which excursions you wish to add. Bring your camera and warm clothes and come on a tour which can take you everywhere - even over the border into Finland! The tour goes by minibus to look for the best locations to find the Northern Lights. If you have a good viewing of the Aurora, pictures will be sent to your after the tour at no extra cost. Please note you may require your passport on this tour in the event you cross into Finland. Tromsø Domkirke Northern Lights Cultural Evening Ferry Cruise in the Island District Search for the Northern Lights on the local ferry which travels around the island district of Tromsø city. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the ferry all islanders use as daily transport. The ferry departs Bellvik ferry quay in the afternoon. The first port of call is the fishing village of Vengsøy. The village still has a lively, yet not very large, fishing industry. Around 80 people live on the island and a number of city people have cabins here. The next port of call, if the ferry is summoned, is the village Laukvik, this is now merely a holiday village. The island which is inhabited is Musvar, an archipelago of islands where the biggest island houses a family of five and one single man. This island is a remainder of the old culture which is now vanishing, a culture where people fed themselves through fishing and farming. The outermost island before we visit Vengsøy again is called Sandøy population two. A historic village populated since the Viking age. We have good local knowledge and will find the best area for the Northern Lights and also good scenery for the pictures. We drive and find the clear sky, even to inner Troms if needed. During the evening we will show you how to adjust your camera for Northern Lights pictures so that you are well prepared the rest of the stay in Tromsø. 6 Husky Sledding with evening meal Drive your own team of huskies or take a ride with our experienced guides and chase the Northern Lights. Guided by headlamps and the dogs noses we go through the snow covered landscape. If the weather is good and you are lucky the Northern Lights will appear. If not you will in either case have an experience you will never forget. After about one hour of dog sledding we return to the Villmark Centre where you will be served Bidos with coffee and cake for dessert inside a Sámi Tent (lavvo). Whenever you want you can step outside to scout for the Northern Lights. You will also have the opportunity to visit the puppies and make some four legged friends. If you wish to drive your own sled let us know when you book, but if the weather is bad you may need to take place in the sled. The price is the same for riding and driving.
