Day 2 May 28, Wed ARRIVe paris reims After arrival in Paris we travel East to Reims, then check in and have dinner. (D) Day 3 May 29 Thu reims Verdun reims Morning drive to Verdun, site of WWI s lengthiest battle with 700,000 casualties. We visit the museum, Fort Douaumont and the trench of the Bayonets before returning to Reims. There we can visit the Museum of the Surrender (where in the early hours of May 7 the Third Reich surrendered unconditionally, followed in the capital cities of the Allied Nations 3pm the next day), and still have time to visit the Cathedral which contains stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. (B,D) Day 4 May 30, Fri reims cambrai valenciennes mons arras Today we follow Canada s Last Hundred Days which began August 8 in Amiens and ended November 11 in Mons, Belgium, in which the Canadian Expeditionary Force of 4 over-sized divisions met and engaged 64 German divisions. We ll visit monuments such as Dury (marking the breaking of the Drocourt-Queant Switch/ Hindenburg Line, where 7 Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross in a single day) and Bourlon Wood en route to Mons, where British forces first engaged the Germans in We end the day in Arras. (B,D) Day 5 May 31, Sat arras Today we visit Vimy Ridge, with Canada s largest war memorial, Hill 70, nearby at Lens. We then travel to Beaumont Hamel to visit the Canadian Memorial Park and Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme; stopping by the visitor centre before returning to Arras, where we will have some time in town. (B,D) Day 6 June 1, Sun arras ieper Depending on the program of the previous day, we may spend a little more time in Arras, the Canadian City, before driving north to Ieper. We ll spend the afternoon in town, with an opportunity to see the lovely Cloth Hall Museum which had to be completely reconstructed after May 27 June 10, 2014 (15 days) WWI. This evening we ll participate in the daily Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. (B,D) Day 7 June 2, Mon ieper Today we explore the battle-scarred surroundings of Ieper, site of WWI s first gas attacks and a great number of war cemeteries. We will visit the Hill 62 Monument, the vast 45,000-grave Tyne Cot Cemetery near Passchendaele and the German cemetery at Langemark bearing 44,000 graves, the St. Julien Canadian Monument with Vancouver Corner and the site of John McCrae s Field Station. (B,D) Day 8 June 3, Tue ieper calais wimereux dieppe We will stop at a remainder of the Atlantic Wall, visit the Canadian Cemetery at Calais and the gun emplacements at Cap Gris Nez before continuing on to Wimereux, outside Boulogne to visit John McCrae s grave. Then we ll head South along the Coast to Dieppe and stop at Puys, where the Royal Regiment of Canada made one of the first assaults on Dieppe and met a German convoy. (B,D) Day 9 June 4, Wed dieppe caen/normandy We ll take a close look at the town and its surrounding areas which hold a place of profound and solemn importance for Canadians. 3 Day 10 June 5, Thu CAEN/NORMANDY Starting the day with a drive to Verrieres Ridge before our ceremony at Cintheaux/Bretteville-sur- Mer Cemetery, we ll drive down the Falaise Gap to Falaise, the town of William the Conqueror. At Mount Ormel we will stop at monument dedicated to a Polish unit and the small nearby museum which describes the battle. We have time for lunch there before returning via Trun and St. Lambert (Major Currie, VC) to the Caen area, where we will visit Ardenne Abbey before returning to our hotel. (B,D) Day 11 June 6, Fri CAEN/NORMANDY We drive to Bayeux, then visit Arromanches and the Landing Beaches where one can still see parts of the Mulberry Harbor. There will be time for lunch in scenic Courseulles, with some flexibility in our itinerary to accommodate the official ceremonies in which we which we will take part. Later we visit the beaches at Bernieres and St. Aubin. (B,D) Day 12 June 7, Sat CAEN/NORMANDY This morning we visit the impressive Caen Peace Memorial, the greatest museum in Normandy. Then there is time for lunch in Caen itself before we tour through surrounding areas such as Audrieu, Putot and the Carpiquet Airfield. We ll head out to Omaha Beach and Point-du-Hoc where American Rangers scaled the cliffs to take out the gun positions, and at the nearby German Cemetery lies the grave of German tank ace Michael Whittman, whose command was taken out by Canadian Sherbrooke Fusiliers tanks. We will then participate in a ceremony at Beny-Sur Mer/Reviers Cemetery before returning to the hotel. (B,D) Day 13 June 8, Sun caen/normandy Paris We spend the morning in Normandy, visiting the Canadian Juno Beach Memorial. After lunch we leave for Paris, check in and have dinner. Then we have some time at leisure to relax or explore this fascinating city, perhaps visit the War Museum or explore colourful neighbourhoods. A second payment of $ 600 is then due by October 31, The final payment is due by March 27, Travel documents will be sent to you approximately 14 days prior to your trip departure, provided full payment has been received. TOUR PRICES: All tour prices for land arrangements are based on rates effective at the time of printing and are expected to be in effect at the time of departure. Should these rates change, it may be necessary to surcharge the price of your vacation. Should the tour price increase by more than 10%, the passenger shall have the right to cancel within seven days of notification without penalty. CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS: Notice of cancellation must be made in writing. The effective cancellation date is the date when written notification is received by STI. The deposit of $600 is non-refundable. STI shall not be responsible or liable for any loss, cost, damage, injury, delay or expense arising from the use of any conveyance, accommodation or service or from acts of God, strikes, weather, quarantine, accidents, sickness, government regulations, insufficient documents and any loss/expense resulting from the above contingencies shall be borne by the tour member. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort of the passenger, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations may be made without penalty to the operators. Additional expense, if any, shall be borne by the passenger. The right is reserved to withdraw any or all tours should conditions warrant, and also to decline to accept or retain any passenger as a member of the tour. In such instances, full or equitable amounts will be refunded. INSURANCE: STI recommends that each tour participant has health, cancellation, interruption, accident and baggage insurance for the duration of his/her travel (in situations where insurance is not included in the tour price.)
