1 Essential Question: How are humans responsible for their environment? Final Product: Reduce, reuse, recycle campaign & PowerPoint presentation Audience: Elementary students Team work 1 Benchmark: Analyze the negative effects of pollution on the environment. Questions to be answered: What is pollution? What are the different kinds of pollution? How does pollution effect the environment? What are the negative effects of pollution? How can we reduce pollution? How are animals and humans harmed by pollution? How is the land harmed by pollution? How can pollution result in loss of habitats? What are students supposed to do? Discuss answers to above questions. Take notes on important information to be used in PowerPoint. Create PowerPoint slides identifying types of pollution and analyzing the negative effects of pollution on the environment. Organize the slides you created into a logical order for final presentation. Team work 2 Benchmark: Describe the importance of conserving our natural resources. Questions to be answered: What is conservation? What are ways in which we can conserve our resources in our daily activities? How does conservation help to save and restore the environment? Why is conservation important for future generations? What are students supposed to do? Discuss answers to above questions. Take notes on important information to be used in PowerPoint. Create PowerPoint slides explaining conservation and describing the importance of conserving our natural resources. Organize the slides you created into a logical order for final presentation. Team work 3 Benchmark: Determine the cause and effect relationships of recycling and taking care of our land. Questions to be answered: What is recycling? What can be recycled?

2 How do you recycle things? How does recycling help to conserve our natural resources? What are students supposed to do? Discuss answers to above questions. Take notes on important information to be used in PowerPoint. Create PowerPoint slides explaining recycling and showing the effect it has on our land. Organize the slides you created into a logical order for final presentation. Final Team Task The class will collectively combine all groups slides into one class presentation. (Teacher assistance may be required.) Design a poster to promote the reduce, reuse, recycle campaign. Create a letter to other classrooms promoting this campaign. (Teacher assistance may be required.) Discuss the best locations for collection container placement. Assist teacher in weekly collection of recyclable materials. 3 Final Team Performance Organizer Teacher Copy Develop a school wide campaign to reduce, reuse, and recycle. 1. Each group should create a poster to display in the school to promote the reduce, reuse, recycle campaign. 2. Teacher will guide class in creating a letter to other classrooms promoting this campaign. 3. Place collection containers at approved locations throughout the school campus. 4. Collection containers will be emptied by the class weekly and taken to recycling center by the teacher. 5. Collection will continue as determined by teacher. Develop a class PowerPoint presentation demonstrating knowledge learned. 1. Students will be divided into small groups. 2. Small groups will be assigned topics corresponding to benchmarks following each individual assessment. 3. Each group will create PowerPoint slides on their topics. 4. At the end of the unit, the groups slides will be combined into one class presentation. 5. Invite each class in the school to our classroom to view the class PowerPoint presentation.

4 FINAL TEAM PERFORMANCE ORGANIZER STUDENT COPY Develop a school wide campaign to reduce, reuse, and recycle. 1. With your group design a poster to promote the reduce, reuse, recycle campaign. Make it colorful. Make words large enough to read from a distance. Identify goals of campaign. Show benefit of campaign. Include any possible dates/times. Select a location for display. 2. With guidance of teacher, create a letter to other classrooms promoting this campaign. 3. Discuss with the teacher the best locations for collection container placement. 4. Assist teacher in weekly collection of recyclable materials.

5 Develop a class PowerPoint presentation demonstrating knowledge learned. 1. Discuss assigned topic within your small group. 2. Take notes on important information to be used in PowerPoint. 3. Open PowerPoint Program on computer. 4. Click File and New. 5. Under New Presentation select Blank Presentation. 6. Choose layout for your slide. 7. Add text, graphics, and other content as needed to your slide. 8. After each completed slide click Insert at the top. Then click New Slide. Continue this until finished with all slides. 9. When finished with all slides, save completed work. 10. At the end of the unit, the class will collectively combine all groups slides into one class presentation. 11. Teacher will arrange a schedule with other classrooms to visit our classroom and view the Grand Finale PowerPoint Presentation.
