A TRIP TO THE PAST Looking for the origins of Tourism
A TRIP TO THE PAST Looking for the origins of Tourism QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT AND DISCUSS What are the origins of tourism? When did all start? Who were the first travellers? When did travelling and tourism start to become more popular? Which socio-economic reasons laid behind the boom in tourism? What were the most fashionable destinations in UK? And Spain? Why do people travel nowadays? How has tourism changed in the last decades? What are the future trends of tourism worldwide?
A TRIP TO THE PAST Here is a list of important events in the development of travel and tourism. Put them in chronological order (based on Harding, K. (1998: 8-11). a. The introduction of paid holidays b. The invention of the motor car c. The introduction of charter flights d. The building of Roman roads e. The building of great religious sites f. The invention of steam engines and railways g. The Grand Tour h. The Internet revolution i. The invention of the jet engine j. The creation of the Olympic Games by ancient Greeks

A TRIP TO THE PAST GROUP WORK You will see now a Presentation where the key events in the development of travel and tourism are illustrated. Your task is to select two or three of them (depending on their importance), find information about them and write a fact sheet about each event you have chosen. Once your group has completed the fact sheets, put all the information together in the format you wish, and present it to the rest of the class. Tell the facts but add something else, your personal touch. Remember that you may find information from the Internet, but also from actual books from the library!
A TRIP TO THE PAST FACT SHEET Your fact sheet should include basic information such as: -Event -Period of time -Who performed it -Why was it performed -Country -Type of travel Add any other pieces of information and/or illustrations to help your final presentation (e.g. pictures, videos). Now, sit down and relax. Look at the Presentation, take notes and enjoy this trip to the past!

Tourism in the 21 st century: New trends in tourism Key trends in society that will probably affect tourism consumption and development (Page, 2009: 72-3): A growth in the over-fifty age group, the new old. A growth in single households, increased rates of divorce and single-parenthood. A growth in information technology: the ease of access through the internet is shaping the tourism demand. Consumers becoming more environmentally conscious. New trends = new markets; e.g. from mass tourism to niche tourism. Find out as many niche tourism markets as you can.
Niche tourism markets New niche markets are shaping new types of niche tourism to cater for the travellers needs; for example: for single people: solo travelling for people over sixty: senior citizen s tourism for people with special physical needs: accessible tourism for those conscious about nature, natural resources and interested in local communities: sustainable tourism, ecotourism and green tourism for people interested in death and tragedy: dark tourism.
Food for thought: Tourism and sustainability The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) celebrates the World Tourism Day. This year s topic is Tourism and Sustainable Energy. Can tourism be sustainable? What does sustainability mean? How will tourism be affected by sustainability? Watch the video of the speech by Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary- General, and find out ( You may also read the full message.
REVISION Key events in Travel and Tourism (I) Can you name some events related to travel and tourism that happened in these historical periods? Ancient Greeks Romans Early Christian times 16th to 18th centuries 19th century Second half of 20th century 21st century A TRIP TO THE PAST

Find out the meaning of Gap year. Can you see any relationship among both concepts? Spa towns (e.g. Bath) became famous for health reasons. Find out the meaning of the acronym SPA. Stagecoaches and coaching inns developed.
A TRIP TO THE PAST Suggested answers: Key events in Travel and Tourism (III) 19th century: Development of steam transport (boats and trains). Thomas Cook set up the first organized tour, a one-day excursion from Leicester to Loughborough in Hotels and resorts started to grow in Europe. Second half of 20th century: Post World-War Two period: workers were granted with paid holidays, cheaper types of accommodation (holiday camps, camp sites) on seaside resorts, charter flights, package holidays = holidays abroad, the Internet revolution. 21st century: Trend as in last decades of 20th century, plus independent traveller, budget holidays, sustainable and responsible tourism^, niche tourism.
