Intonation is the music or movement of your voice The voice can go up (a rise) The voice can go down (a fall) English uses intonation for communication: a different intonation gives a different message In English, we use intonation to express attitude (our feelings) Big voice movements express strong feelings Flat intonation expresses that you are not interested or that your attitude is negative Intonation: French has a flat intonation English has a descending and ascending intonation: it goes up and down 80% English has a falling intonation 20 % English has a rising intonation Questions have a falling intonation ex: What time is it? (all WH-question: what, where, why, who, whose which, how ) Interrogations have a rising intonation Ex: do you like chocolate?
