1 Tips for a Successful Move-in! HOWL-O THE WELCOME Breathe, relax, and take your time Drink plenty of water, it s hot out there! Break down your boxes and dispose of them in the dumpster outside the building Take your trash to the outside dumpsters Keep the hallways clear so others can move in safely without tripping over your belongings Unload and then park your car away from the building so others may unload Take breaks, it is not a race to see who moves in first Stop for refreshments. Rejuvenate yourself!! Return hall dollies and do not hold elevators Get an ID and make sure it lets you in the hall Get to Know Your Roommate! Communicate with each other Make a living agreement with your roommate and/or suitemate Keep an open mind Respect each other Take breaks from each other Have fun Residence Life, Arkansas State University FALL 2015 Welcome to ASU Residence Life We hope that you find this newsletter to be helpful as you move-in to our residence halls. We are glad that you are here and hope that you take a moment to review the information supplied in this newsletter. This includes the following offices: Financial Aid, Office of Treasurer, Registrar Office, Parking Services, ID Center, & Recruitment.

2 Residence Life Fall 2015 Zone Parking The University has zone parking. What does this mean? Zone parking designates parking areas on campus for specific groups. For example: if a student lives in Kays or University hall, they will park in the parking lot directly behind these buildings. The lots are restricted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to students living in the residential facility associated with the parking lot. Students will not be able to move their car to another lot on campus between the hours of 8:00am 2:00pm. Every student living in the residence halls must obtain a parking decal and validation sticker to avoid a parking ticket. Parking Services The Parking Services office will be open on Saturday, August 22 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Any student that does not have a permit validated for their residential parking lot should visit Parking Services. Parking Services Highlights Located at the intersection of Johnson and Caraway Permits must be purchased online through mycampus You can contact Parking Services at or parking/, if you cannot get by the office during office hours or need more information NOTE: Beginning August 24, 2015, all residents must have their current parking permits displayed on their vehicles and validated for their particular residential lots. Parking Lots All Residence Life parking lots have an arm gate at each entry. During move-in, these gates will be up to allow a continuous flow of traffic. Beginning Monday morning, August 24, all arm gates will be operational. You must have an activated ID card for your building in order to gain access into the parking lot. There are cameras on these gates. Any vandalism or mischievous behavior will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct Get Involved with RHA The Residence Hall Association is the campus-wide residence hall government. The purpose of this organization is to improve the living environment of the halls and to represent the views of the residents. RHA plans social activities, attends regional and national conferences, and much more. This is a great leadership opportunity! See your RA or Hall Director to find out how you can get involved. 3 Residence Life Fall 2015 Maintenance Request If you find something while unpacking that needs to be repaired immediately (i.e. sink or shower leak), please notify someone at the front desk. During the year, you can submit room repair requests on-line by visiting edu/a/residence-life/index.dot and click Maintenance Work Order under Important Links or you can scan the QR Code below Our maintenance staff will respond as fast as they can. Just keep in mind that your work order request is not the only work order out there. Private Room Availability If you live in Kays, University, or Arkansas and are interested in a private room, please go to the front desk of your hall and put your name on the Private Room Waiting List. If rooms become available, the Residence Life office will contact you. Until then, if you have been assigned a double occupancy room, you will be assigned a roommate. Get to know your roommate and plan for a positive experience. Questions about Changing Rooms No Questions Asked room changes begin September 2, 2015 and ends September 4, During this time you can change rooms without our office asking questions. If you are interested in changing rooms, you must come by the Department of Residence Life and see the Assignments Coordinator. You must complete the appropriate paperwork before a room change is final. Any room change made without approval will result in an improper room change fee. Any room changes after this period must go through the appropriate channels. Your Resident Assistant can help you with this process. Laundry Made Easy We hope that you enjoy the use of the included laundry program. Your ID card has been activated for 50 washes/50 dries per semester. All you have to do is swipe your ID card at the laundry panel, select a machine, and wash/dry your clothes. It s that simple. Page 3

5 Residence Life Fall 2015 Residence Life Staff Spotlight Patrick Dixon Director of Residence Life What made you choose student housing as a profession? While I was Resident Assistant, I enjoyed the interaction with students. I later became an Assistant Hall Director and I enjoyed the logistics and managment roles. After graduation, I worked in finance but I discovered that I didn t like finance as much as I thought. I realized that my passion was in Student Affairs. So, I returned to the University, talked to my supervisors, and was surprised to learn that there was a profession known as Student Affairs! I quickly signed up! What are you most proud of about the department of residence life? Proud moments involve talking with former staff members regarding their achievements and goals. It makes me proud to know Residence Life had a small part in their success! What s one interesting fact about you? I am a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan TO THE BONE!! Why did you choose ASU? I went to a placement exchange in Chicago and Arkansas State University was there interviewing! I signed up! I met the Vice President of Student Affairs who laid out a development plan for Arkansas State University. I was intrigued with the new Assistant Director for Residence Life position.
