Assistant Director, Grainger Center for Supply Chain Management Wisconsin School of Business University of Wisconsin-Madison December 4, º - The Extra Degree 4 As a participant in this webinar, you will be able to: Articulate the 212 philosophy Know what it is and what it is not Understand and utilize a framework for deciding where to dedicate your time, energy and effort And to be really, really thoughtful about what matters most to you Identify extra degrees you can implement for yourself, for others and for your organization December 4, º - The Extra Degree 5 I am using my time, energy, and effort on the things that are most important to me. I am giving 100% effort to everything to which I have committed. If I chose to, I could take 10 to 15 minutes every day (or one hour each week) to do something important to me. December 4, º - The Extra Degree 6 212º - The Extra Degree 2
If you had an extra 10 minutes in your day that you could only spend doing something for yourself, and that would make a meaningful difference in your life, what would you do? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 7 Think about a time when someone did something special for you gave just a little extra. What did they do? How did it make you feel? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 8 What would your chapter look like, sound like, feel like, and be like if everyone gave just a little bit more? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 9 212º - The Extra Degree 3
December 4, º - The Extra Degree People want to be happy. 2. We are happiest when we get to do things we love and about which we are passionate. 3. Our time, energy and effort is limited and valuable therefore we cannot do it all. We must make choices. 4. If we invest our limited time, energy and effort in the things we love and about which we are passionate, we will be happier and we will get better results. December 4, º - The Extra Degree the extra degree tm What it is and What it is Not December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 4
At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. Adapted from S.L. Parker s 212 : The Extra Degree (2005) December 4, º - The Extra Degree 13 Applying one extra degree of temperature to water means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine. December 4, º - The Extra Degree 14 The purpose of 212 is to help you internally define and take ownership of the most fundamental principle behind achieving results beyond your expectations. EFFORT December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 5
Seemingly small things can make tremendous differences BUT In many cases, people will work harder to avoid the extra effort than actually applying the extra effort that will produce originally desired outcomes. December 4, º - The Extra Degree 16 Why do you enter into any activity with anything but a commitment to achieve your objective of that activity not a desire to achieve your objective, but a commitment? December 4, º - The Extra Degree Is this decision likely to strengthen my relationships with other people? 2. Will this decision provide me with novelty and challenge? 3. What is the opportunity cost of this decision? 4. Does this decision help me be me? 5. When I consider a particular course of action, do I feel energized or drained? 6. How happy are the people who have made the same decision? December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 6
1. What do I love to do? What am I passionate about? 2. What skills do I need to develop? 3. When do I find myself in flow? 4. Will my life be better because of this? 5. Can I really, honestly give 100% to this? If I say yes, can I commit 100% of the time, energy, and effort that it will take for me to achieve the outcomes? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 19 Take action with commitment. Then, when you re ready for exponential results, apply the extra effort. Sometimes you ll have immediate exponential results and sometimes you ll realize the benefits of your extra effort much farther down the road. December 4, º - The Extra Degree 20 It s your life. It s your chapter. You are responsible for your results. It s time to turn up the heat. December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 7
Inches make a champion. Vince Lombardi Hall of Fame football coach December 4, º - The Extra Degree 22 If you had an extra 10 minutes in your day that you could only spend doing something for yourself, and that would make a meaningful difference in your life, what would you do? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 23 Waking up 10 minutes earlier each day is the equivalent of over one and one half work weeks in a year to be used however you wish. Eliminating one half hour of television each day results in additional hours each year to make something great happen. Investing in yourself one extra time each week creates more than 50 opportunities each year be a better you. December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 8
What could you do with that time, energy, and effort? Read one new article on something that interests you Participate in a professional development opportunity Take a class that interests you Do a few extra reps at the gym Take a walk Journal Watch a TED Talk or other inspirational/educational video Meditate Call a friend Volunteer Do one thing each week that pushes you out of your comfort zone to challenge yourself and grow Attend a campus speaker, lecture, or presentation on a topic that is new or interesting to you December 4, º - The Extra Degree 25 You remember 1/3 of what you read, 1/2 of what people tell you, and 100% of what you feel. Bill Swanson Chairman and CEO, Raytheon December 4, º - The Extra Degree 26 Think about a time when someone did something special for you gave just a little extra. What did they do? How did it make you feel? December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 9
Leaders must communicate in a way that makes people feel what they need to do and they will do more if they feel invested in themselves, in you, and in the organization. Visit or talk with one extra friend each week, and that results in 52 additional discussions each year. Make one extra contact each day, and that equates to more than 200 additional possibilities and connections as a leader. December 4, º - The Extra Degree 28 How could you use a little extra time, energy, and effort to invest in relationships with others? Write one thank you note each day for someone who has done something nice for you Make one phone call each week to a friend with whom you ve lost touch or with whom you want to reconnect Make it a point to give someone a genuine compliment each day Invite and treat someone to coffee each week Ask someone about how things are going for them and genuinely listen to what they have to say Express your appreciation to a co-worker who has done great work during the week Offer to lend a hand to someone who could use some extra help on a project, assignment, or task December 4, º - The Extra Degree 29 The line between failure and success is so fine that we are often on the line and do not know it. How many a man (or woman) has thrown up his (or her) hands at a time when a little more effort, a little more patience, would have achieved success. A little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success. Elbert Hubbard American writer & business person December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 10
What would your chapter look like, sound like, feel like, and be like if everyone gave just a little bit more? December 4, º - The Extra Degree 31 How could you use a little extra time, energy, and effort to invest in developing your chapter? Take 5 minutes each meeting to recognize the work of members Review the goals you have set for your organization each week and evaluate the progress you have made; develop action steps for the coming week that will get you closer to accomplishing them Check-in with each officer, chair, or committee head to see how things are going, compliment them on their hard work, or offer help Talk with a member you haven t met or don t know well; find out what they re interested in; the next time a project or task comes up that aligns with their interests, ask them to help Create one extra opportunity each month for members to get to know each other and cultivate relationships Invite one faculty or staff member to each meeting to help introduce them to your organization, thank them for what they do, and ask for advice on a challenging problem or issue Ask to attend the meeting of one new organization each week and discover possibilities for cooperation and collaboration December 4, º - The Extra Degree 32 You may not always be able to turn up the heat and hit the boiling point, but that doesn t mean you shouldn t make an attempt. 211 can serve a purpose but 212 is the extra degree. December 4, º - The Extra Degree º - The Extra Degree 11
212 the extra degree tm Thank You! December 4, º - The Extra Degree 34 Please type your questions or comments in the questions box on your screen. If you would like to verbally ask your question, you may click the raise hand icon. Please be sure to introduce yourself and your chapter and school before asking your question.
