3 ESL Course Descriptions ESL LITERACY BASIC ENGLISH ESL BASIC COURSES - Levels 1-4 This language course is for basic level learners who want to improve their English. Learners learn to speak, read and write English for daily activities. Learners do basic grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation activities. ESL 1-2 This language course is for basic level learners who want to learn, speak, read and write English for daily activities. Learners learn basic grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. ESL 2-3 ESL LITERACY COURSES - Levels 1-2 ESL WINTER-SPRING 2015 BROCHURE 3 This course teaches the basics of reading, grammar practice and writing, speaking and listening to inspire and prepare learners for daily life. Learners will learn basic math and language skills. In this course, learners will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking. This course will help improve vocabulary and pronunciation skills. ESL 2-4 Learners will improve their grammar, listening, speaking and writing skills by doing exercises, and participating in conversations. EVERYDAY ENGLISH This language course is for basic level learners who want to learn, speak, read and write English for daily activities. Learners complete basic reading, writing, and grammar activities and practice vocabulary and pronunciation for everyday life. LISTENING & SPEAKING for BEGINNERS In this class, learners are able to practice listening and speaking skills. Learners also practice basic pronunciation and problem sounds. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ESL INTERMEDIATE COURSES - Levels 3-5 ESL 3-5 This is a low intermediate English course focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course teaches grammar and pronunciation. Learners will also improve their vocabulary skills. ESL 4-5 This is an intermediate English class focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing. This class teaches grammar and pronunciation. Learners will also improve their vocabulary skills. ESL CONVERSATION 3-4 This course offers learners conversation practice. Learners will learn how to start conversations in various life situations. Learners are taught vocabulary, expressions and grammar that can be used in conversations. EVERYDAY ENGLISH 3-4 Learners will improve their grammar, reading, listening, speaking and writing skills for everyday English use. Printed handouts, listening and video materials are used in the classroom.
4 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 4 ESL WINTER-SPRING 2015 BROCHURE ADVANCED CONVERSATION ESL ADVANCED COURSES - Levels 5+ This course teaches learners to advance their conversation skills. Conversations are practiced using everyday topics or news events. Learners practice advanced conversation in groups. ADVANCED LISTENTING & SPEAKING This course teaches advanced conversation practice using proper grammar and pronunciation. This course helps learners to become more fluent in English. Learners can develop and improve listening skills for work, study and daily routines. ADVANCED SKILLS DEVELOPMENT This course teaches listening, speaking, reading and writing at an advanced level. There is a focus on correct grammar usage and speaking fluency. Workplace communication is also a focus. The course is a prerequisite for TOEFL & IELTS or a University or College test. ADVANCED VOCABULARY This course teaches advanced vocabulary that can be used in a variety of situations. Learners will be able to use new vocabulary in different life and at work situations. ADVANCING YOUR ENGLISH This course will help learners improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to an advanced level. Learners will study common English idioms and expressions as well as slang forms of the language. A brief introduction to academic English is also included in the lessons. READING & WRITING Learners will improve reading & writing skills for everyday life. Learners will learn reading and writing strategies to improve their English. ESL Course Descriptions EVERYDAY ENGLISH Learners will improve their English by practicing advanced level vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking activities. ESL 5-6 This class will help learners develop and improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Learners will study common English idioms and expressions as well as slang forms of the language. ESL 6-8 This is an advanced course focused on improving and practicing spoken English and writing skills. Learners will practice their listening and speaking skills. A variety of difficult English grammar will be examined and practiced to improve and advance writing skills. ESL 7-9 This course is high advanced and helps learners progress in speaking, reading, listening and writing. The use of radio, newspapers, and television are used to improve language skills. Conversation activities focus on different topics to help learners communicate in English. Pre-academic texts are used to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing. IMPROVING YOUR ENGLISH Learners will be able to improve their English by practicing listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course teaches advanced level English. Learners will be able to advance their grammar, vocabulary and idioms. ESL ACADEMIC PREPARATION COURSES - Levels 6-9 ACADEMIC FOR TOEFL & IELTS This course will improve your writing skills for academic purposes. There is a strong focus on academic grammar and writing skills. This course is for learners who want to enroll in academic courses. IELTS This course will teach learners how to achieve high listening, reading, writing and speaking IELTS scores. The course is divided into four modules: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Learners will learn how to write the IELTS exam. Learners will also learn how to manage their time during the exam. The course provides learners with practice tests.
5 ESL Course Descriptions ACADEMIC VOCABULARY This course teaches vocabulary for academic purposes. Learners will discuss meaning and use of academic vocabulary. INTENSIVE ENGLISH FOR COLLEGE This course will prepare students who wish to take college courses. Essay writing, study skills, and high level grammar will be the focus. ESL WINTER-SPRING 2015 BROCHURE 5 ESL ACADEMIC PREPARATION COURSES - Levels 6-9 TOEFL PREPARATION SPECIALIZED ESL COURSES This academic preparation course is designed to prepare learners for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. This intensive language training course will help learners increase their TOEFL scores. The course is based on improving: speaking, listening and reading comprehension, writing and grammar skills, and essay writing. Learners will be given sample exam questions for practice. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ESL COMPUTERS Learners will be able to get computer and language knowledge. Learners practice the English language using Microsoft Office programs, internet, and other topics. Learners will be introduced to computer vocabulary. Language is the focus. ESL FOR IT PROFESSIONALS This course will teach ESL learners the language and terminology related to the IT profession. Learners will be able to understand workplace culture and trends of the IT profession. Learners will do interactive computer activities. COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING This course will introduce learners to computerized accounting terminology and concepts. Learners will do readings and exercises on the following topics: General Ledgers, Sales Tax, Account Payable & Receivables and Bank Reconciliation. Learners will focus on the language of the accounting profession. BUSINESS COMMUNICATION This course helps students communicate in business settings. Communication strategies are introduced to students so that they can effectively communicate in a business oriented environment. COMMUNICATION FOR ENGINEERS This course which prepares internationally educated engineering graduates for professional communication in the Canadian workforce. The course topics include: presentation, developing and enhancing meeting, and negotiation skills, language of tactful communication, preliminaries of technical writing, and introduction to the Canadian professional engineering practice. GRAMMAR COURSES - Levels 3-6 GRAMMAR & WRITING This course is designed for intermediate learners to develop their grammar and writing skills. Learners will learn and improve their grammar and writing skills and will be able to progress from writing small paragraphs to short essays using proper grammar. GRAMMAR IN CONVERSATION In this course, learners learn grammar concepts that can be used in conversations using different topics. Learners are able to practice conversations and use proper grammar and pronunciation. APPLIED GRAMMAR IN CONVERSATION This course will teach English grammar to help learners with English conversation. Learners will be able to apologize, make requests, express gratitude, etc.
6 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 6 ESL WINTER-SPRING 2015 BROCHURE ESL Course Description CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION CONVERSATION CAFÉ FOR FARSI SENIORS CONVERSATION COURSES - Levels 1-7 Seniors can learn everyday English and basic communication skills. This course teaches listening, speaking, reading and writing for everyday use. This is a bilingual course for Farsi speaking seniors. CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH This course allows learners to practice their conversational English skills. Learners are able to improve their listening and speaking skills using different topics and situations. Conversation practice is done in pairs and small groups. BASIC CONVERSATION In this course, learners are able to practice basic conversation. The main focus of this class is listening and speaking. Learners also practice basic pronunciation and problem sounds. CITIZENSHIP COURSES - Levels 3-8 This course prepares learners for the Citizenship test. The course teaches learners about Canadian geography, history, culture and government. Learners gain an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens. Learners do practice test questions for the citizenship exam, learn more about Canada, and improve their English language skills. This course uses the citizenship study guide, Discover Canada. ESL CONVERSATION Learners will learn how to start and develop conversations in various situations. Learners are taught vocabulary and grammar that can be used in conversations. LISTENING & SPEAKING In this course, learners will improve their speaking & listening skills. Learners will learn how to listen and speak in everyday situations. WRITING & CONVERSATION In this course, learners are able to practice basic conversation. Learners will practice writing in English. Learners also practice basic pronunciation and problem sounds. ESL CONVERSATION CAFÉ This course allows learners to practice English conversation. Learners are introduced to new vocabulary and grammar to help them in conversations. PRONUNCIATION COURSES ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION Learners will improve pronunciation skills using pronunciation drills and practice problem sounds. PRONUNCIATION CLINIC This course will improve pronunciation through drills and practice. Learners will listen to real conversations and focus on pronunciation.
