3 Aquatic Classes The Angleton Recreation Center is proud to offer the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Our Learn-to- Swim Program is structured to promote water familiarization, safety, correct stroke technique and personal development within an enjoyable and safe environment. Our instructors are certified and trained to teach people of all ages and abilities. Registration is open to members of the Angleton Recreation Center, as well as the community. Participants Policies First Day: Recreation Center members and non-members must sign program activity log at the front desk before entering pool. Non-members must sign in and pick up Swim Lesson Pass at Front Desk while members should have their membership ID ready to present to staff and scan in. Learn to Swim Participants: There will be a quick orientation to our program on the first day; please make plans to attend this. Attendance: Please show up at least 5 minutes before class begins. You are responsible for being on time to all class sessions. Late entries will not be allowed to participate and the instructor(s) will not schedule a makeup session. All participants should come dressed in their bathing suits and bring towels. Inclement Weather: All Swim Classes are held indoors and we do not cancel class for inclement weather. Refunds: Refunds must be requested 7 days before the session begins. Less than 7 days notice, there will be no refund. A doctor s note is required for FULL refund due to an extended illness. A $10 administrative fee (refund fee) is charged for all refunds (with the exception of refunds accompanied by a doctor s note). There are no make-up days for missed classes. Cancellation of classes: Each class has a limit due to participant/instructor ratios. Cancellations of classes occur 24 hours before class starts, if there are not at least 3 registered. There are no refunds for classes. If class is cancelled a voucher good for up to 1 year can be issued at the participant s request. Healthy swimming: We ask all parents to help us keep our pools healthy and safe for all users. In order to do this, we ask that all patrons with kids: Change garments and diapers in a bathroom, never on deck. Wash your child thoroughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming. Never swim or allow your child to swim with diarrhea. Any bodily-fluids dispersed into the swimming pool will require the pool to be closed for a minimum of 30 minutes. Parents: We encourage parents to stay and watch their child; however, we do not encourage parental involvement during the lessons (except the Parent & Me class). We ask that you watch your child from the vending area or benches in pool area. Unless observers have a Rec Center membership, they are not permitted to use the Recreation Center. Appropriate attire: Swim diapers are required on all children who are three (3) years and younger. Only bathing suits or attire made of bathing suit material is allowed in our pools. The lifeguards and the instructors have the ultimate decision on what is acceptable and what is not. If it is necessary to change at the facility, please arrive several minutes early for the scheduled class, but no more than a half an hour. Locker rooms: There are locker rooms directly attached to the facility for your use during lessons. Parents with children of the opposite sex must use the family bathroom located in the vending area. 2

4 Class Level: The teaching staff will evaluate the skills of the children during the first class and reclassify them as necessary. The instructors have the ultimate discretion on which class level is best for a youth and have the right to switch a child into a higher or lower class level. Please be aware that although your child s swimming ability and comfort in the water will improve, we do not guarantee that your child will pass each level in accordance with Red Cross standards. Personal Items: Please properly label all toys, goggles, towels, and other items brought onto the deck, as we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items. No food or drinks allowed in the pool area. Instructors: If you feel a swim instructor or other Rec Center staff does not provide a sufficient level of customer service, please contact Robin Brant, Recreation Superintendent. All patrons are encouraged to fill out an evaluation form at the front desk at the completion of the session so we can see how to better serve our customers. Class discipline: We reserve the right to take children out of classes when they are verbally or physically abusive to students or instructors, or if they disrupt the class. Special Note: A certificate from any one of our classes does not ensure against drowning! Panic is the major cause of drowning & even a good swimmer can panic. Parents should at all times watch children at a pool or a wading pool, even when there is a lifeguard on duty. Parents know their child s ability level & can spot a problem more quickly than a lifeguard. Never assume that a child is safe in a water rings, swim ring, inner-tube, float toy, holding on to a kickboard, or even a Coast Guard approved life jacket. The child may float into water over his/her head, lose their floating support & find themselves too far from the side of the pool. 3

9 Private Swim Lessons Angleton Recreation Center conducts private lessons for all ages. This allows the instructor to personalize sessions to fit your individual needs as well as your schedule. All lessons are dependent on availability of the instructor and facilities. As we host other aquatic events and facility reservations, we are limited by the schedules and availabilities of both our instructors and facilities. It is our goal to process and begin all lessons as soon as possible without sacrificing the high quality service we strive to provide. In the event that an instructor is not immediately available, the swim lesson request forms are filed according to the date in which they were received. Once an instructor who has a schedule compatible with the requested lesson times becomes available, they will contact our applicants to set up a lesson schedule. Semi private should consist of two participants only and should be registered at the time of sign-up. Register for Private/Semi-Private Lesson: To register for Private/Semi-Private Lessons you must fill out a Private Swim Lesson Request Form on-line or at the Angleton Recreation Center and an Instructor will get back with you as soon as possible to schedule your lesson. Failure to show for lesson will result in forfeiture of fee and cancellation of lessons. Recreation Center members and non-members must check in at the front desk before entering pool. Nonmembers must sign in and pick up Swim Lesson Pass while members should have their membership ID ready to present to staff and scan in. There will be a quick orientation to our program on the first day; please make plans to attend this.
