2 For those seeking an internship placement in the fields of microfinance, economics and finance, there are a number of opportunities in Cape Town. We offer a comprehensive array of internship openings within the South African financial sector, ranging from financial management to microfinance. South Africa is the largest economy in Africa and an internship in this field will give interns the opportunity to engage international and domestic financial matters. Applicants with an interest in economic development should consider one of our microfinance internships, as this will place you in an internship environment where you will contribute to poverty reduction through the economic enfranchisement of previously disadvantaged South Africans. As an intern, you will have the incredible opportunity to learn what it takes to succeed in your chosen industry by observing and working with experienced professionals. Each internship program is individually tailored, based on your internship questionnaire, your background and experience, and what you are looking to gain from the placement. Once we have received all your information we will give you the placement option suited to you and available at your time of travel. The internship housing is located in the popular area of Cape Town called Observatory (known as Obs by the locals), approximately 7km from the centre of the city. This suburb town boasts a surprisingly cosmopolitan vibe despite its deceptively intimate size. Much of its unique bohemian atmosphere is attributed to the many international visitors that stay in this area. Observatory has a fascinating local culture, which offers an interesting collection of cafes, boutique stores, book shops and art galleries by day, while evenings awaken trendy restaurants, lively bars and live music performances. Internship housing offers you a private, lockable and furnished room in a comfortable house exclusive for your use. The accommodation is centrally located to the shops, restaurants and public transport. The house is secure and is serviced twice a week by cleaning staff. There are also laundry facilities available; alternatively there are Laundromats in the town. Shower/toilet facilities and the use of a lounge area with DSTV are shared and there is WIFI in the house for R300 per month. All interns will have complete access to a fully furnished kitchen and there are several grocery stores in Observatory should you wish to prepare your own food. If you have elected to have the meal plan, you will be provided with 2 delicious meals a day (lunch and supper) during the week, Monday Friday, which are prepared by our program chef.

4 Many interns opt for the meal plan because it is convenient and affordable. The meal plan saves you the hassle of preparing lunch in the early morning before you start work. After a long day at work, it s also great to know that you will have a delicious meal waiting for you! Dinners are served in a buffet-style at The Foreign Exchange (FOREX), a restaurant and bar located in Observatory. Dinners are a great way to meet other interns in the program and enjoy a fun and friendly home-like atmosphere (there is also free wifi at FOREX). You have the option of collecting your meal in a take-away container if you would prefer to eat your meal at home. FOREX is also the collection point for lunches for the following day. If you will be interning in the townships, please be aware that you will most likely be living in an area where there are no places to buy lunch. We highly recommend that you consider at least signing up for a lunches-only meal plan at $35 per week. On the weekends you will have complete access to the kitchen should you care to prepare your own meals. Often during the weekends interns tend to eat out as they are out and about exploring Cape Town or on excursions. You will receive transport orientation on the local public transport when you arrive and will be shown how to travel safely. Most interns commute to work using the city s public transportation grid. If your internship site is located within the townships or outside of the public transportation grid, you will be required make use of private transportation for safety reasons. Private transportation is at offered at a rate of USD 55 per week. Please refer to the Application Process Overview document for details on the application procedure and the timings involved. In general, after submitting your application we will review your requirements together with our project partners to establish the best internship opportunity for you-this will however also be based on availability. You will then receive a detailed internship site brief. This internship site brief will include a full description of that specific placement and what is expected from you as an intern.

5 INTERNSHIP POSITIONS: Economic Development Microfinance Debt Counselor Financial Management REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Previous experience in finance and/or economics or with a plan to be studying in a related field On arrival to Cape Town you will be collected at the airport by one of our project facilitators and transported to your accommodation. You will then take part in a two-day extensive orientation program which will include: Meet and greet with the project staff Full induction into your role as an Intern Familiarization with the requirements of your internship site and how to maximize your stay Information on living in Cape Town and a review on emergency procedures Discussions on the history, local politics and geography of the Cape Town and South Africa Detailed information on health, well-being, and safety issues A tour of the city and the public transportation methods to help immerse you in your new surroundings Throughout your placement you will have the support and guidance of our experienced internship coordinators. They are part of our greater African Impact support team, which will provide you with competent 24-hour field support and assistance.
