3 Overview 0 MV capacitor bank selection guide Step 1: basic data collection How to choose the right power factor correction capacitor bank? The recommended method consists of five successive steps Network characteristics: b voltage U (V) b network frequency f (50 or 60 Hz). Characteristics of the installation: b insulation voltage U insulation b rated power of the transformer Sn (kva) b transformer short circuit voltage Usc (%) b existing capacitor bank (Qc (kvar), type of capacitor bank, ). Operating conditions: b energy bills b measurements of power: P (kw) cos phi. Step 2: calculation of the reactive power Qc (kvar) DB The reactive power is determined either: b from the electricity bills, depending on the method of recording the consumption of kvar applied by the energy supplier b from the electrical data of the installation. The aim is: b not to pay for the consumption of reactive energy and to ensure optimum use of the transformers, cables and control and protection switchgear b to satisfy the standards currently in force: compliance with a minimum cos phi, energy quality standards. Step 3: choice of type of capacitor bank according to the harmonics The presence of non-linear loads (variable speed drives, UPS, etc.) creates harmonic currents and voltages. The compensation equipment is chosen according to the value of these harmonics. b either the installation has no harmonics and there is no risk of resonance b either the installation has harmonics and/or there is a risk of resonance b in the absence of information about the installation and as a precautionary measure V Select a capacitor bank for a slightly polluted network (see selection table in step 5) V Select a capacitor bank for a highly polluted network (see selection table in step 5) V Select a capacitor bank for a highly polluted network (see selection table in step 5) Harmonic filtering To improve the quality of electrical power, Merlin Gerin provides a range of compensation and filtering solutions. The HV or MV filters that absorb the harmonic currents in the electrical installation consist mainly of capacitors associated with filtering reactors. They are used to: b bring the percentage of distortion back to the acceptable values recommended by the energy distributors b and also compensate for the reactive power. Schneider Electric can undertake compensation and filtering analyses.
4 Overview 0 MV capacitor bank selection guide (cont.) Step 4: choice of type of compensation Global compensation The type of compensation should be chosen by taking into account the calculated reactive power Qc (kvar) and the apparent power Sn (MVA) of the upstream transformer. Qc/Sn < 15% the reactive power of the capacitor banks is constant and they are started up or shut down when a predetermined kvar value is reached. It is an on/off type of operation. V Fixed compensation Qc/Sn > 15% the customer specifies automatic startup or shutdown for the capacitor bank (controlled by Varlogic varmetric relay). The reactive power of the capacitor banks is split into steps with the possibility of starting or stopping more or fewer steps. The reactive power corresponds to the change in load requirements V Automatic compensation Motor compensation b if there is no risk of self-excitation V The capacitor bank will be connected in parallel with the motor b if there is a risk of self-excitation. V But it is only possible to connect to the motor terminals, the capacitor bank will be connected to the busbar independently of the motor. Step 5: selection table The recommended choice is based on the network insulation voltage, network harmonic pollution level and on the type of compensation. b if the power of the capacitor bank to be installed is less than 600 kvar b if the power of the capacitor bank to be installed u 600 kvar. V A low voltage solution is recommended V See the following table. 5 Propivar capacitors E The Propivar capacitors are used to compensate reactive power on medium and high voltage networks. Single-phase Propivar capacitor. Presentation A Propivar medium voltage capacitor is a steel case or tank provided with resin insulators. The tank comprises an assembly of capacitor elements having a maximum permissible rated voltage of 2250 V. When connected in series-parallel groups, they provide high power units for elevated system voltages. There are two types of capacitors: b with internal fuses (single-phase capacitor) b without internal fuses (three-phase or single-phase capacitor). Each capacitor is normally provided with discharge resistors to bring the residual voltage down to 75 V 10 minutes after the capacitor has been switched off. If requested, the capacitors can be supplied without discharge resistors. Construction The Propivar capacitors are composed of elements which include: b aluminium foil electrodes b a dielectric liquid with no PCB or chlorine and a polypropylene film. Compliance with standards The Propivar capacitor complies with standard NF C and with the following standards: b IEC 60871, 1 and 2 b BS 1650 b VDE 0560 b C22-2 N 190-M1985 b NEMA CP1. Capacitors with internal fuses comply with the following standards: NF C , IEC Protection by internal fuse Propivar capacitors can be supplied with internal protection: each element or unit capacitor is equipped with a fuse. In the event of a breakdown of an element, the element is disconnected and isolated. Breakdown of a unit capacity may occur: b when capacitor voltage is close to its maximum amplitude. In this case, it is the power stored in the capacitances of the parallel elements which guarantees a current sufficient to rupture the internal fuse (fig. 1) b when capacitor voltage is close to zero. This current ensures breaking of the internal fuse (fig. 2). Advantages of this protection type: b instantaneous disconnection of the short-circuiting element b lifetime of the capacitor b reduction in material costs and maintenance b continuity of service is ensured b possiblity of programming site maintenance. E14445B E14445A Propivar capacitor with internal fuses, composed of 4 groups connected in series, each group comprising 12 elements connected in parallel. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Main characteristics The exceptional life of Propivar capacitors is due to their temperature withstand, small temperature rise, chemical stability and overvoltage and overcurrent withstand. Temperature withstand These capacitors can be put into service at low temperatures without any special precautions being taken. At higher ambient temperatures, the temperature rise is very low, so they can be operated without any risk of modifying the insulation characteristics of the dielectric. Chemical stability Transient overvoltages in circuits and partial discharge levels in tanks cause accelerated ageing of capacitors. The exceptional life of Propivar capacitors is closely connected with the intrinsic properties of the dielectric liquid: b very high chemical stability b high absorption capacity for gases generated during partial discharges b very high dielectric strength. Overvoltage and overcurrent withstand The capacitors can accept: b an overvoltage of 1.10 Un for 12 hours a day b a power frequency overvoltage of 1.15 Un for 30 minutes a day b a permanent overcurrent of 1.3 In. The withstand of capacitors is verified by: v cycles at an overvoltage level of 2.25 Un (cycle duration 1 s) v ageing tests at 1.4 Un. 4
