4 Introduction Welcome to KONOS History of the World Year III! If you have been using KONOS History of the World, you are aware of how fun and interesting it can be! Contents of History of the World III Past KONOS History of the World users are familiar with components lesson: Lesson focus biographies vocabulary map study timeline of events Bible study history reading literature reading writing assignments the ever famous list of KONOS activities!!! KONOS History of the World III is organized the same way BUT we have added two new components: art history music history because of the time period we are studying..the Renaissance! Though designed for you to work on your own, rather than being taught by a teacher or parent, there will still be activities which include family, friends, or even groups of other homeschoolers. Learning Goals of KONOS To develop Godly character. It is not what you know about a subject that pleases God, but rather, what kind of person you become as you study a subject. KONOS History of the World will help you learn PERSEVERANCE, DISCERNMENT, CREATIVITY, RESOURCEFULNESS, ORGANIZATION and many other character traits worthy of your time and training. To promote both academic and personal excellence in everything we do. KONOS History of the World will help prepare you for entering college, holding a responsible job, or raising and homeschooling a future family. The character traits you learn from KONOS are designed to help you be the best you can be at whatever the Lord calls you to do. To encourage a life-long love of learning. KONOS' unique blend of activities for every learning style and choices to fit every personal taste, take boring stuff and make it exciting and fun. Students often do not realize they are doing school, because it is so enjoyable! That is what creates a love of learning!

5 Closer Look at Weekly Components Though each week will have its own instructions, a few general instructions about each weekly component will help you get started on the right foot. Bible Study Start each week with the Bible study.read it, meditate on it, and apply it to your life. Biography Cards Each week, activities will assign biography cards. Making a card is very useful for the student in many ways. For instance, adding a picture to the card helps visual learners put a face to the actions. Peoples pictures have already been collected for you in the Appendix. Choosing which facts to include means students must evaluate the most important facts about the person. Reviewing with the card system makes a quick and easy drill. Students may wish to color code cards. Color coding systems could be based on area of interest, i.e. art, religion, politics, music, etc. Alternately, they could then be arranged on the basis of century, time period or nationality. Some students prefer to place the picture and name only on the front and information on the reverse. This is especially good for review when they are used as flash cards. There is no need to be overly concerned with dates and details on these biography cards, they are best as a quick synopsis of the importance of that person's life. Vocabulary It is necessary for students to KNOW the vocabulary words for each week. The best way to learn the definitions is to look up the definitions, write them down, study them, and have your mother ask you out the vocabulary list each week in a test. That will keep you on your toes!!! Map Study The study of history and geography go together naturally. Each week has map activities to help pull together all the history facts. Students should begin the year with a large map of Europe, and a large map of the world, both without political boundaries. In certain lessons, map overlays can be made to draw in political boundaries or special events. The best way to make a map overlay is to purchase a sheet of lamination film near the size of the map. These can be purchased very inexpensively by running a lamination machine through empty. The resulting sheet of film is very transparent, tough, and readily accepts permanent or dry erase markers. The overlays can be held in place during the study with binder clips making the overlay easy to remove for another topic. Binder clips also serve as a good hanger system for the wall. Directions for smaller, page sized maps made during some lessons will be included in the lesson. Other map activities may just require the student to find locations from an atlas or other source.

6 History Reading Literature Reading Both history and literature reading resources are given in each chapter, plus the student will find many unlisted resources as he researches various topics. As with all non- textbook based classes, internet research and library resources will be used extensively. 7 Lesson Focus Each week the Lesson Focus gives the objectives for the week and the thrust of the week's lesson, so students are trained in focusing on what they should know by the end of the lesson rather than merely working though a chapter and answering questions at the end of the chapter. Knowledge, not just the answers to questions churned out, is important to KONOS users. Timeline The Timeline gives a particular period in history's special dates. Read the Timeline dates at the beginning of the lesson and mark them on your old KONOS Timeline for a overview; re-read and re-visit the KONOS Timeline in the middle of the week to stay on track, and then re-visit them a third time for a summation. Do not merely read. READ and THINK about what you are reading. Writing Assignments At the end of each lesson there are short lessons in literature and composition. Follow the writing instructions given for each lesson whether you are to write a paragraph, an essay, or a paper. If you are still writing on the assignment from the previous week when another assignment comes up, you always have the option of continuing to work to finish the present assignment and skip the next assignment altogether or moving forward. Paragraphs should be finished in a week, essays COULD take two weeks, and papers COULD take three weeks. Music Students should choose favorite music selections from the assigned pieces throughout the year. They can then prepare a CD of their favorite selections. Those with recording equipment could create a radio special introducing each composer with a little background information. Speech/Drama Special events every semester give the students a chance to show off work, and get together with friends and family to share what has been learned. Although they are optional, these events greatly enrich the learning experience and provide lasting memories. Drama Night These are especially good following the studies of the Shakespeare Plays, Macbeth and Hamlet. Students can build drama credits and take part in editing scenes, directing, acting, making costumes, building sets, and promoting. Although this is perfect in a co-op setting, other homeschoolers can often be recruited to take part.

8 Renaissance/Reformation Dinner Everyone must come in character as a famous person in the Reformation/Counter Reformation. Separate tables will be made for Catholic and Protestants. (Plain for the Protestants, ornate decoration for the Catholics) Hold a Reformation Game Show modeled after Family Feud or another quiz show. Film a living timeline with everyone stating their character and a quick synopsis of their character s history. Art History Art Gallery Simulation In addition to the favorite framed print of the week, students can participate in a year long Art Gallery simulation. The student assumes the role of owner of an art gallery. He must choose one to two works from each week's study as favorites for his gallery. He will build upon this each week, and may purchase each piece by printing a copy from the computer. After collecting ten, the student must retire one if a new selection replaces a favorite. Those retired should be compiled in a scrapbook gallery, on a poster or even electronically as a website or power point presentation. Each piece will have a background to go with it, and why it is a favorite of the student. At the end of the year, the student will have evaluated all the artwork in the curriculum, and chosen his favorites in his gallery. This would be nice to share with a co-op class or support group. Art in the Park Event Near the end of the school year, arrange an art exhibit in a local park or church grounds. Reserve a pavilion or room in case of poor weather. This will give the student a chance to show off the art projects completed in this curriculum. To add to the fun, arrange to create a giant copy of the Mona Lisa using chalk on a parking lot. To do this, create a grid system on a parking lot. Recreate the image on the grid. Give each student or team a grid section to complete. Using chalk, they duplicate the images on their square. Be sure to start either at the middle and work out or at the top and work down. A full explanation of gridding, and a special 3 toned reproduction of the Mona Lisa is available in the Draw Today Curriculum. More ideas, such as a Shakespearean Film Festival, a French Salon, and a British Tea are explained as activities in the curriculum.

9 Planning Xerox this page for each week. With your mom, plan out your week choosing what to do when. As you get better, you may be able to do all planning on your own. 10 Book List Keep a list of books read and date read, so you can refer back to the list when writing papers or looking for information or answers.

11 Tracking Credits This course is designed to give a full credit in: History English (Literature + Composition) Art History It is also designed to give a ½ credit (depending on the number of hours spent) in: Music appreciation Geography Speech/Drama Bible Art Each credit (Carnegie unit*) = 150 hour = 5 hours per week spent for EACH SUBJECT Each ½ credit = 75 hours = 2 ½ hours per week spent for EACH SUBJECT * A Carnegie unit (150 hr.) is based on 180 days of class X 50 min. per class Now you know what it takes for a credit, how will you keep up with your hours to amass a credit? The boxes beside each component and each activity are for that purpose. When you do an activity, check the box beside the activity. Then record the amount of time it took to complete the activity in the box. Round off minutes to the nearest ten or fifteen minutes. Finally, put the date the activity was completed in the box. X 3/12/10 H 45 min. A graduation cap accompanies all activities recommended for those headed to college. At the end of the week tally up all the time spent on each subject and record it in the clock grid. This way you have a weekly account of how many hours you have spent in each subject. History English Art History Geography Music appreciation Art Speech/Drama Bible FA in a box stands for Fine Arts. Music, Art, Architecture, and Speech/Drama can be counted together instead of separately to give a full or a half credit in Fine Arts.
