Bloomberg s Business Week Myers-Briggs Inventory (Purchase from Rockhurst Bookstore) Course Description To explore the various techniques, instruments, processes, and styles employed by leaders to communicate effectively within organizations. Students write, give oral presentations, and learn how to use electronic media effectively. Exercises employ numerous real or simulated business situations that require communication in different styles, using a variety of forms and methods. This course is designed to provide an introductory experience and orientation to the MBA and establish common communication protocols, determine critical selfawareness profiles, and identify the Rockhurst learning themes that will be applied throughout the program: leadership, ethical behavior & corporate social responsibility, business skills & knowledge, information analysis and application, international/global perspective, & communication. Course Objectives Organize substantive ideas and supportive detail) related to business problems. Present ideas with clarity and coherence. Communicate information and ideas verbally in a clear, logical, and persuasive manner.

2 BUS 6000 Syllabus Fall Use verbal communication skills [listening and speaking] to present and consider issues and information among a group or team. Take and integrate peer and professor feedback on all assignments. Laptops & Cell Phones Laptops should not be open in class (I will post my lectures). Ensure you turn off phones before class unless you are expecting an important call. Wall Street Journal & Business Week Subscriptions Online subscriptions to WSJ and Business Week magazines are provided to all Helzberg students. (MBA, BSBA, BA in Economics, and Business Minors) Paper copies of The Wall Street Journal will be available in the lobbies of Conway and Massman Hall. At the beginning of your first semester, starting in August or January, please come to the front desk in C201 for your online journal account codes. An announcement will be ed to you and flyers placed around Conway when the codes are ready. Please make every effort to register at that time. Should you have questions or problems contact the Helzberg School front desk (C201) at x4090 or lynn.ross@rockhurst.edu. Business Week Magazines are available on a first come first serve basis the first 3 weeks of the fall semester in C201 or the lobby of Conway WSJ kiosk. Your paper subscription should arrive at your local address the end of the first month of classes. THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SEMESTER please check to make sure your local mailing address in RockWeb is correct. Your Business Week will be sent to that address. Your account number will be on the address label. Academic Honesty Policy Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. The Catalog provides examples of academic dishonesty and outlines the procedures, penalties, and due process accorded students involved in academic dishonesty. All infractions will be immediately referred to the Dean's office. In your research paper, make sure you provide citations for all ideas and information that are not your own. Crisis Management The Crisis Management Team for, out of a concern for the safety and welfare of all community members, urges you to familiarize yourself with Campus Emergency Procedures as well as emergency, evacuation, and shelter signage located within and outside of buildings across campus. They also request that you sign up for Rock@lerts, the University s emergency communications system. All community members must comply with University staff instructions during regularly scheduled fire/tornado drills as well as actual emergencies. Information regarding the above resources can be found at Presentation Skills Course Requirements Presentation skills are essential for effective communication, and leaders need these skills to be effective in their organizations. Presentation 1 Assignment: Prepare & deliver a 3-minute oral presentation on a public company in which you would invest if you had an extra $10,000. The goals are for the class to learn about a company of interest to you & for you to develop & practice presentation skills.

4 BUS 6000 Syllabus Fall Directions: This should be a 3-minute presentation that includes 5 slides & 1 must be a financial slide. Be sure to show your stock symbols on the intro slide, conclusion slide, and 1 other slide (imprinting). Be sure to put your name and the date of the article on your intro slide. You may use notes and handouts. Use clip art, photographs, or other visuals to communicate the brand/products. Presentation 2 Assignment: Prepare & deliver a 3-minute oral presentation related to a recent Wall Street Journal article & be prepared to answer questions from the audience. This presentation should teach the audience a few main points specific to the issue & point of the article. Directions: This should be a 3-minute presentation that includes 5 slides & 1 must be a financial slide. Use the WSJ template posted on-line. Be sure to put your name and the date of the article on your intro slide. You may use notes and handouts. Use clip art, photographs, or other visuals to communicate your article. Focus on connecting with the audience rather than simply focusing on your material. Make it interesting. Many of your audience will have worked all day & will greatly appreciate something that perks their interest. Presentation 3 Assignment: Prepare & deliver a 3-minute oral presentation that is of interest to you. You may use a presentation from another class. Choose a topic that allows you to show us your very best! Directions: This should be a 3 minute presentation that includes 5-6 presentation slides and 1 must be a data slide. You may use notes & handouts. You will be graded on your demonstration of what you learned this semester including 6x6 rule, parallelism, font size, and use of color, projection, eye contact, & body language. Writing Skills Effective business communication begins & ends with good writing. All papers should follow the American Psychological Association Guide and be typed in 12-pt font. You will write a 1 page single-spaced point-of-view (POV) essay on 4 of the 6 MBA Learning Goals: 1. Leadership. Demonstrate personal responsibility & awareness of self & others; build effective teams; influence & enable others to improve organizational effectiveness. 2. Ethical Behavior & Corporate Social Responsibility. Analyze ethical & corporate social responsibility issues in context & implement appropriate actions. 3. Business Skills and Knowledge. Integrate and apply skills and knowledge across business disciplines, to manage effectively in dynamic environments.

Demonstrate & apply a global cultural, political, historical, geographic, environmental, & economic perspective to decision-making within a complex & changing world context. 5. Information Analysis and Application. Identify access, analyze, and synthesize relevant information that optimizes effective decision-making. 6. Communication. Communicate effectively by speaking, listening, reading, & writing with internal & external stakeholders; & create an environment in which effective communication can occur. Final Assignment: Submit all of your final POV papers in your portfolio. Your portfolio will include each of your 4 drafts, all peer reviews, and all revised papers. Your grade will not be based on how you compare to others but whether you have taken the feedback from each paper and ensured that you no longer make the same mistakes. ALL PAPERS SHOULD FOLLOW THE TEMPLATE AND THE WRITING GUIDELINES CHECKLIST to earn an A. The final papers should have a copy of the writing guidelines attached indicating that you have checked each paper for errors. Evaluation Grading I am here to I am here to help you succeed. You are responsible to do the work & turn it in on time. Part of your evaluation in this course will result from your active, meaningful participation. If you are not in class, you cannot participate. The only reason to miss a class is if you are ill. Please call, , or text me prior to your absence. I have a blackberry and I am available 24/7. Feedback In addition to instructor feedback, you will be part of a collaborative environment allowing you to see & learn from other people s work. Furthermore, you will be working through a natural writing process: drafting, getting feedback, revising, and editing. As the writer, you will need to evaluate the feedback you get from both peers & the instructor. Each of you will give feedback to at least one other person on many assignments. Your paper must have the peer review, the template, & the writing guidelines checklist attached to it when you submit it to me for grading. Criterion I will grade all written communications using the Writing Checklist, Template, & the Rubric. I will grade all presentations using the Presentation Checklist.
