2 INTRODUCTION TO BOTSWANA Northern Botswana is considered by many to be the premier safari destination. Wildlife sightings are astounding, camps are set in magical locations, service is supreme and the standard of guiding is high. Due to the remote and wild nature of the camps, you will have short flights between locations, which is an incredible way to change camps as you take in the scenery below. This safari is led by Denver Zoo President & CEO Shannon Block and Vice President for Conservation Rich Reading. Botswana is a location of emphasis for Denver Zoo s Conservation Department, and while enjoying these magical locations, Shannon and Rich will share details on our various projects. Denver Zoo works to reduce human-wildlife conflict by promoting co-existence between people and animals, by researching the ecology and effectiveness of conflict mitigation measures. Our work currently focuses on African wild dogs, wildebeest, vultures, elephants and lions, so there is much to discuss.

May 29 COST Following your morning game drive and brunch you will have a bush flight to Maun, arriving in time to connect to your flight to Johannesburg (not included in price) where you connect to your homeward bound flight. $11,950 per person for double occupancy $14,900 per person for single occupancy Cost includes internal bush flights starting and ending in Maun, Botswana, accommodation, meals, drinks, laundry, park/conservation fees, and activities. Not included, out-of-pocket costs to consider: International Air to and from Johannesburg and round trip between Johannesburg and Maun, Botswana. Tips On safari, we recommend $20 per person, per day -- $10 to your guide, and $10 to the camp staff. In city hotels, $1 a bag. Depending on flight connections, you may need to add a night in Johannesburg. Travel Insurance is required by the camps we can assist with Travel Guard, or you are welcome to secure your own policy. Health visit to a Travel Clinic and any medications or vaccines needed. Note: This is a discounted pay-by-check or bank wire price. 4 CAMP KALAHARI MAKGADIKGADI PANS 2 Nights The Makgadikgadi Pans are enormous salt pans left behind from an immense, ancient super lake the size of Switzerland. This area is famous for its vast emptiness, where it is claimed that the infinite horizon allows you to see the curvature of the earth. People fall in love with the area and consider it one of the ultimate highlights of the safari. This part of the trip will provide a sense of adventure as you speed across the pans on quadbikes and discover Stone Age tools in the vast emptiness. For others, it is the interactive experience with meerkats that makes for an unforgettable animal encounter. The San Bushman people will amaze you with their survival skills in this area. There is no doubt that this location is extremely unique, which makes it an unforgettable experience. Camp Kalahari is a return to the traditional safari style of the old explorers, and is situated in the gorgeous oasis of Hyena Island, perched right on the edge of the Makgadikgadi pans. It is the ideal camp for those who want fun, comfort, style and adventure, all combining to form a fantastic safari destination. Camp Kalahari has ten classic Meru style tents. All tents have en-suite, open air bathrooms with flush loos and hot water showers. The tent interiors are old safari style with comfortable beds.

5 KALAHARI PLAINS CAMP CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE 3 Nights Kalahari Plains Camp, in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, is surrounded by an immense pan. It comprises 10 en-suite canvas tents with a sleep-out above each. Game drives concentrate around Deception Valley, Sunday Pan and Leopard Pan, with full days out and a picnic lunch possible to reach more area. Walks with Bushman are an incredible way to learn life skills from this culture. Bush walks to nearby pans are an opportunity to get more in-depth to the nature of the Kalahari. Antelope of the area include the oryx, springbok, wildebeest, red hartebeest and steenbok. Predators include the black-maned lion, leopard, brown hyena, black-backed jackal, caracal and a high concentration of cheetah. The area is particularly good for observing smaller carnivores such as the Cape fox, honey badger and many of the mongoose species. Over 250 bird species have been recorded in this area, with regionally-threatened species such as the Kori bustard, lappet-faced vulture, and other arid species of Burchell s sandgrouse, crimson shrike and secretary birds. Accommodations include a roll-up canvas flap leads to the en-suite bathroom. Flush toilet, twin basins with mirrors, and a large walk-in shower are standard. A double-layered canvas roof covers the tent and deck. The extra layer protects well against the strong Kalahari sun. The insulated canvas walls and airflow between the tent and the roof keep the interior relatively cool. Solar energy provides power for the electricity and hot water in the camp. The main area of Kalahari Plains Camp is a long, narrow open-sided tent on an elevated wooden platform. Side panels can be rolled down to protect those inside against the elements. There is a dining area and well-stocked fridge at one end, and a comfortable lounge area with a seating area and small reference library at the other. To the center, is a wood-top bar and stools, a popular meeting place for guests and guides to discuss the day's adventures and sightings. Outside are a couple of hammocks strung up in nearby trees, and a campfire that s great for star-gazing with a night-cap. Meals can be consumed in either indoor or outdoor dining areas. A buffet breakfast includes cereals, fruit, yoghurt and freshly made muffins. Also included are eggs made to order, beans, sausage, bacon and tomato. A hearty brunch is available upon return from the morning activity, or for those on a full day game drive a picnic of sandwiches, fruit and biscuits is taken with you. Dinner is a group affair and is eaten around a long table. A tasty onion soup accompanied by a freshly-baked bread roll is for starters, and a typical main course consists of a well-seasoned roast chicken, potato wedges, vegetables, and a simple salad. A mouth-watering dessert follows, such as a custard slice. There is also a good selection of beverages to compliment any meal.

6 DUBA PLAINS CAMP OKAVANGO DELTA 3 Nights Lions at Duba Plains mostly hunt during the day, and anywhere from 5 to 15 kills are witnessed on game drives each month. Watching the enormous and courageous Duba Plains buffalo bulls defend their herd can be as awe-inspiring as a successful hunt. Duba Plains guides put an emphasis on finding lions or the large buffalo herds and wait until they interact. Thus, many drives center on observing the two species and their behaviors. Aardwolves, spotted hyenas, elephant breeding herds, warthogs, and red lechwe are some of the other species that frequent the area. Duba Plains is also very rich in birdlife and is a hot spot for the endangered wattled crane. Duba Plains is one of the best places to experience the Okavango Delta, as it is incredibly scenic. It has become an excellent place to explore by boat, when water levels allow. The Duba concession (known as Kwedi Reserve) is in one of the most remote areas of the Okavango Delta and is one of the largest private areas with 77,000 acres reserved for just the single camp. The Duba concession consists of vast open plains with small palm islands of thick vegetation, as well as beautiful channels of water. Accommodations at Duba Plains consists of six roomy tents with an en-suite bathroom, an outside shower, and a veranda overlooking a gorgeous floodplain. The thatch-roofed lounge, dining room and bar areas are raised on platforms as well as the small swimming pool. Duba Plains is one of the smaller camps around - there is definitely an intimate feel here and it has been consistently one of the best managed camps in Botswana.

7 SELINDA CAMP SELINDA RESERVE/LINYANTI MARSHES 3 Nights Selinda Camp is located in the 300,000 acre Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, and is built on a wooded island on the banks of the Selinda Spillway, close to where the Linyanti, Savuti and Kwando Rivers come together. The views of the open flood plains and savanna are astounding, and wildlife is a constant feature of the camp. The Selinda Reserve is well-known for its outstanding predator viewing, including highly-endangered African wild dogs and cheetahs. Lions and leopards are also frequently seen. There is also a good variety of antelope species, including spectacular sable and roan antelope. Giraffes and elephants are regular fixtures. Selinda Camp offers game drives throughout the day - focusing primarily on early morning and afternoon/early evening game drives but guests can travel out at midday to enjoy a siesta at one of the game viewing hides that are mostly located overlooking water. It is also possible to arrange a sleep out on an elevated platform with just a mattress and mosquito net for an unbelievable wilderness experience, but you will be hard pressed to give up a night in your tent. This camp is owned and was rebuilt in 2007 by famed wildlife filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert. They have created one of Botswana s most luxurious tented camps, featuring nine well-appointed tents with expansive views and large bathroom areas. The common areas include an art gallery, plunge pool, chilled wine cellar, and two meal areas that are under thatch and under the stars. Splendid meals are also featured. This is a camp where refinement meets the wild.
