Equal emphasis will be placed on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing plus cultural knowledge. Japanese is a Category 4 language, which is the most challenging language for native speakers of English. After the completion of 116A, 116B, 110, & 150, majority students are expected to demonstrate intermediate (Mid) level proficiency in tasks. Intermediate-Mid: Able to handle successfully a variety of uncomplicated, basic and communicative tasks and social situations. Can talk simply about self and family members. Can ask and answer questions and participate in simple conversations on topics beyond the most immediate needs; e.g., personal history and leisure time but speech may continue to be characterized by frequent long pauses, since the smooth incorporation of even basic conversational strategies is often hindered as the speaker struggles to create appropriate language forms. Pronunciation may continue to be strongly influenced by first language and fluency may still be strained. Although misunderstandings still arise, the Intermediate-Mid speaker can generally be understood by sympathetic interlocutors. Those who minor in Japanese are expected to pass Japanese Proficiency Test (Level 3). Some successful students may be able to pass Japanese Proficiency Test (Level 2). The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is held worldwide every year to evaluate and certify proficiency in Japanese of non-native speakers. The test has been held annually since You will be able to take the exam at San Francisco State University on December 4 th, 2005 (October 7 th at 5 pm is the last day to register). Cultural knowledge such as in/out group, honorific, in/formality, and superior/inferior relationship will be stressed. Scanning skimming Other than reading materials in the textbook, we will practice scanning and skimming skills using web pages, or ads. COURSE PROCEDURES The class is conducted in Japanese as much as possible. The information and material related to this course will be posted on WebCT. We will be using a newer version called WebCT 6 as a pilot class. For those who used WebCT, WebCT 6 looks a little bit different. There are two ways to access to WebCT. (1) Access from WebCT 4: Go to Log in with your Saclink ID and password. Click on Japanese 116A. In the course, there will be one icon, which is the link to WebCT 6. You will need to log into WebCT 6 with your Saclink ID and password again. (2) Go to WebCT directly. Go to Log in with your Saclink ID and password. It is your responsibility to follow the schedule, study and review these materials. In the first week, study (textbook p.3-4), and get a saclink account and locate your own CSUS web space by going to CSUS Personal Web page We will spend 2-3 weeks for each lesson. Please talk to me if you are interested in showcasing your work. Active participation of the student in class is the most essential and important key to improve your language skills. Be on time. If you miss more than a week, contact your instructor. If you need to make a special arrangement, talk to the instructor. GRADING A B D A C D B C F B C - Note: (1) To go on to JPN 116B, you need a C or better. (2) The lowest grades for the following will be automatically omitted at the end of the semester (this applies to all students). 3 quizzes & exercises. MAKE-UP POLICY (IMPORTANT) As a basic rule, no make up or extension will be given for the graded items which you have missed by coming late to or absent from the class. However, make ups may be given on a caseby-case basis, normally with medical and course/career-related excuses, only if you do both of the following: (1) You provide the instructor with an official statement (written by a doctor, an advisor, etc.) which explains your absence. AND (2) You provide the excuse as soon as possible; typically before the class for the expected events and after (but as soon as possible) the class for unexpected events. In the case above, for the homework assignments, the first day of presence after the absence is considered as the due date, and for the other graded items, the appointment must be made for a make up in a timely manner. The homework assignments may be handed in before the due date for the full credit, if the student cannot be present on the due date. Academic dishonesty? For your info, visit The Student Health Center and satellite clinics provide students with a "Visit Verification Note" to verify that the student was seen at the health center and they are unable to attend class.
